Three Wildcats and a Seawolf Earn Weekly America East Track and Field Honors; Lathrop Garners Second Straight

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – University of New Hampshire senior Will Brehm (Pembroke, N.H./Pembroke Academy) captured a pair of titles while classmate Paul DeTurk (Durham, N.H./Oyster River) led a sweep of the hammer throw to lead the Wildcat men at the second Wildcat Invitational and earn the male Track and Field Performers of the Week accolades. Fellow Wildcat senior Ashlee Lathrop (Sherburne, N.Y./Sherburne-Earlville) claimed a pair of victories and two ECAC-qualifying marks over the weekend to garner the female Field Performer of the Week honor while Stony Brook University junior Lucy Van Dalen (Wanganui, New Zealand/Wanganui Collegiate) posted the sixth fastest time in the nation to capture the female Track Performer of the Week award for the week ending April 11.

Brehm won both the 100m (10.70) and the 200m (21.94) to lead the men at their second home invitational of the season. Brehm’s time in the 100m qualifies him for the IC4A championship in May. At the Wildcat Invitational, he also ran a leg of the 4x100m relay that placed second in 43.01 as well as the 4x400m relay that captured third in 3:27.72.

DeTurk earns his second weekly honor of the outdoor season after leading the New Hampshire men in a sweep of the top four spots of the hammer throw. He won the event with an IC4A-qualifying toss of 60.06m. The mark is the best posted by a conference competitor this season and ranks 20th in the East.

Lathrop remained dominant in the throwing events, winning a pair of title to capture her second consecutive weekly accolade. She won both the discus and the hammer throw with ECAC-qualifying marks of 42.74m and 53.06m, respectively. Lathrop remains atop the conference standings in both events after improving both her tosses by over a meter.

Van Dalen raced to second in the 1,500m at the Carolina Classic to capture a top finish for the Seawolf squad. She crossed the finish line with a time of 4:17.95, which is the sixth fastest time in the country and third best in the East region. The mark also qualifies her for the ECAC championship in May and ranks her first in the conference standings by over 13 seconds.

Albany – Albany competed at the UMass Nine-Way Meet on April 10. The men’s program placed first among 11 schools with 201.50 points while the women’s team finished second among nine schools. Albany’s men’s squad had two IC4A-qualifying performances, six event champions and a winning relay. Senior Garrett Askew (Newark, N.J./Hudson Catholic) and junior Wilfredo de Jesus Elias (Arroyo, P.R./Natividad Rodriguez Gonzalez) won the 110m high hurdles in 14.85 seconds and the hammer throw with a mark of 56.41m, respectively, to qualify for IC4As. Freshman Jonathan Santana (Rochester, N.Y./Edison Tech) accumulated 15 points individually by winning the 400m dash in 48.29 seconds and placing fourth in the 200m in 22.25. The freshman also anchored the victorious 4x400-meter relay, which hit the tape in 3:19.66. The Albany women’s squad had three individuals qualify for the ECAC Championship, four win an event title, one set a school record as well as a winning relay team. Junior Celine Cauderlier (Entzhein, France/Lycee Louis Pasteur/Université Louis Pasteur )  led the way by winning the pole vault and setting a new school record with an ECAC-qualifying mark of 3.70m. Other ECAC qualifiers included junior Christen Griffin (Waldorf, Md./Maurice J. McDonough), who placed second in the 100m hurdles (14.23), and sophomore Catie Coxon (Delanson, N.Y./Duanesburg), who finished third in the discus throw with a personal-best mark of 42.72m. Freshman Sherez Mohamed (Albany, N.Y./Academy of the Holy Names) won the 400-meters in 58.62 and sophomore Brittany Eveleth (Watervliet, N.Y./Watervliet) was victorious in the 400-hurdles in 1:03.55. Both student-athletes were also members of the first-place 4x400-meter relay team (3:53.66), which beat out second-place Boston College by 3.55 seconds. Freshman Ashley Mahlmeister (Unadilla, N.Y./Sidney) rounded out Albany’s list of winners by taking first in the long jump with a mark of 5.49m. The women’s team will next participate in the UConn Select Invitational in the morning, while the men will battle the Huskies afterwards in the 1st Annual “Dogfight,” a dual scoring meet between two of the top programs in the Northeast Region.

Binghamton – The Bearcat squads competed at the Bucknell Invitational on April 9-10 where the men’s squad captured five IC4A marks and broke two records. The men’s 4x400m relay team earned Binghamton’s only title of the day, placing first with an IC4A-qualifying time of 3:12.58. The quartet of freshmen Dustin Ross (Bainbridge, N.Y./Bainbridge-Guilford-Afton), Casey Gilbert (Berlin, N.Y./Berlin Central), and Zach Keefer (Yonkers, N.Y./Fordham Prep) and junior Cazal Arnett (Queens, N.Y./Christ the King) set a new stadium record in the event. Arnett also claimed a top individual finish at the meet, finishing second in the 400m in an IC4A-qualifying time of 48.01. Junior Casey Quaglia (Bangor, Maine/Bangor) and freshman Jeff Martinez (Johnson City, N.Y./Johnson City) earned two more top-five finishes for the Bearcat men, coming in second in the 1,500m and third in the 10,000m, respectively.  Martinez’s mark of 30:05 in the 10,000m shattered the previous school record set in 1992 and is the top time posted by a conference competitor this season. On the women’s side, the 4x100m relay team of sophomore Jessica Conter (Glendale, N.Y./Archbishop Malloy), seniors Jasmine Hinson (Beacon, N.Y./Beacon) and Krystelle Patrice (Brooklyn, N.Y./Health Professions) and graduate student Kim Williams (Buffalo, N.Y./Leonardo de Vinci) earned a third-place finish with a time of 48.47. Hinson also captured fourth in the 200m (25.50) and ran a leg of the 4x400m relay that also took fourth place (3:53.02). Senior Caitlin Wright (Ithaca, N.Y./Lansing) rounded out the women’s top-five finishes, placing fifth in the 400m hurdles (1:02.96). Binghamton returns to action on April 17 at the Bucknell Team Challenge.

Boston U. – The Terrier squads sent most of its members to the Florida State Seminole Invitational while a few competed at the UMass Lowell George Davis Invitational. At the Seminole Invitational, junior Karly Neveu (Surrey, British Columbia) led the women, tying for first in the high jump with an ECAC-qualifying leap of 1.78m. Freshman Allison Barwise (Orange, Conn.) tied for third (1.68m) in the event. Neveu and Barwise are ranked 1-2 in the conference performance list. Freshman Nikko Brady (New Castle, Del.) also grabbed two top individual finishes at the meet, placing second in both the long jump (5.75m) and the 100m hurdles (14.02). Her time in the 100m hurdles qualifies her for the ECAC championship in May. Brady also ran the first leg of the 4x100m relay that won in 47.07. Senior Sarah Mosser (East Aurora, N.Y.) captured another top-two finish for the Boston U. women, earning second in the 800m (2:13.21). On the men’s side, the Terriers captured three first-place finishes. Sophomore Peter Gilmore (Hanson, Mass.) crossed the finish line in first in the 3,000m steeplechase (9:38.51) while junior Joel Senick (Saskatoon, Saskatchewan) also picked up an individual title, racing to first in the 400m in an IC4A-qualifying time of 48.31. Senick later ran the third leg of the 4x100m relay that won in 41.74 and qualified for IC4As. In the field, junior Dan Withrow (Dedham, Mass.) claimed two top finishes for the Terrier men, placing second in the shot put (15.58m) and third in the discus (49.56m). Withrow tops the conference standings in the discus throw after posting an IC4A-qualifying mark at the meet. At the George Davis Invitational, Julia Mirochnick led the Terrier women, crossing the finish line in third in the 100m hurdles (16.26), while freshman Adam Weaver (Bethlehem, Pa.) led the men, placing third in the pole vault (3.94m). Boston U. next competes at the Holy Cross Heptathlon on April 14-15.

Hartford – The Hawk squads competed at the University of Massachusetts Spring Meet on Saturday where the men’s team placed ninth out of 11 squads while the women finished eighth in the nine-way meet. Freshman Priscilla Appiagyei (South Windsor, Conn./South Windsor) led the women, capturing second in the 400m in a school-record time of 58.75. Senior Kaycee Martinez (South Yarmouth, Mass./Dennis Yarmouth Regional) also claimed a top finish, placing third in the 400m hurdles (1:04.97). Freshman Brittney Lawson (Woonsocket, R.I./Woonsocket) paved the way for the Hawks in the field, setting a new school record in the hammer throw with a mark of 46.17m. She finished fourth overall in the event. Sophomore Caitlin Hauswirth (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem North) also broke a school record, clearing 3.05m in the pole vault to improve her personal-best mark by six centimeters. Junior Jonas Hampton (Pottstown, Pa./Pottsgrove) led the Hawk men on the track, breaking a school record in the 10,000m. Hampton finished sixth in the event with a time of 32.34.47. Sophomore Anderson Emerole (Jamaica, N.Y./Manhattan Center for Math and Sciences) and junior Warren Lane (Brooklyn, N.Y./Murry Bergtraum) captured two more top-five individual finishes for the men, placing second and third, respectively, in the 400m, while the men’s 4x400m relay team combined for a time of 3:22.10 to take home second-place in the event. Hartford returns to action at the Holy Cross Multi meet on April 14.

Maine – The Black Bear teams competed in the Wildcat Invitational on Saturday led by freshman James Reed (Garmisch, Germany/Munich International School) and sophomore Jesse Labreck (Oakland, Maine/Messalonskee). Reed captured the men’s 110m hurdles title in an IC4A-qaulifying time of 14.57. The rookie’s mark is the best posted by a conference runner this season in the event. Labreck won the 100m hurdles in an ECAC-qualifying time of 13.89, the top time in the conference this season. Labreck also took second in the 100m dash (12.14). Seniors Skip Edwards (Portland, Maine/Portland) and Miles Bartlett (Casco, Maine/Lake Region) also claimed titles for Maine on the men’s side, placing first in the 400m dash (49.95) and the steeplechase (9:47.83), respectively.  On the women’s side, sophomore Shaniqua Burgess (New Haven, Conn./Hillhouse) posted another ECAC-qualifying mark, winning the 100m dash in 11.98 just ahead of Labreck. Maine also took third, fourth and fifth in the event. Senior Vicki Tolton (Smithers, British Columbia/Smithers Secondary) claimed two more titles at the meet and another ECAC-qualifying mark for the squad, capturing first in both the 400m (55.03) and the 400m hurdles (1:02.72). Tolton now tops the conference standings in both events. Junior Vanessa Letourneau (Fairfield, Maine/Lawrence), seniors Brenna Walsh (Dartmouth, Nova Scotia/Dartmouth) and Alli Krous (Yakima, Wash./Walla Walla CC) and sophomore Katherine McGeoghan (Agawam, Mass./Agawam) also all captured titles for the Black Bear women. Maine next competes at Holy Cross on April 17.

UMBC – The Retriever men’s and women’s squads captured three gold medals and broke two school records at the Mason Spring Invitational on Saturday. Senior Victor Gilreath (Catonsville, Md./Western Tech/Maryland) led the men, winning the triple jump for the third consecutive week with a leap of 14.84m. Gilreath again posted an IC4A-qualifying mark in the event. He also took home silver in the high jump (1.95m). Sophomore Aaron Brooks (Aberdeen, Md./Harford Tech) claimed another title for the men in the field, placing first in the shot put with a toss of 15.56m while on the track, the men’s 4x100m relay team earned a title, crossing the finish line in first in 42.00. Senior Brian Pendleton (Aberdeen, Md./Harford Tech), who ran a leg of the 4x100m relay, also placed third in the triple jump (13.59m) and fourth in the long jump (6.49m). Senior Michael Christmas (Invercargill, New Zealand/James Hargest College) claimed another top finish for the men on the track, breaking a school record in the 800m with a time of 1:52.97. On the women’s side, senior Sara Parkinson (Chorley, England/Loughborough University) posted a top finish, placing second in the 1,500m in a school-record time of 4:31.85. Classmate Britney Foreman (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake) also claimed a top five finish on the track, garnering third in the 100m dash (12.30), while freshman Amanda Deller (Aberdeen, Md./Aberdeen) posted a third-place finish for the women in the field. Dellar claimed bronze in the shot put with an ECAC-qualifying mark of 13.78m, placing her atop the conference performance list. The Retriever squads return to action at the Morgan State Legacy meet on April 17.

New Hampshire – The Wildcats hosted the second Wildcat Invitational on April 10. Senior Ashlee Lathrop led the women, winning a pair of titles for the third straight meet. Lathrop claimed victory in both the discus throw (42.74m) and the hammer throw (53.06m) with ECAC-qualifying marks. She ranks first in both events in the conference standings. Junior Kate Early (Corning, N.Y./Corning East) captured another title for the women in the field events, earning first in the shot put (11.04m). Early also claimed a second-place finish in the high jump (1.62m). Classmate Camille Quarles (Derry, N.H./Pinkerton Academy) garnered a third title in the field, winning the triple jump (12.34m) ahead of sophomore Eliza Mackintosh (Hanover, N.H./Hanover), who posted a mark of 11.55m to place second. On the track, junior Allison Letourneau (Kingston, Nova Scotia/Berkshire Prep School) led a sweep of the 800m, crossing the finish line in first in 2:13.12. Letourneau also ran a leg of the 4x400m relay that finished second in 4:04.76. Senior Will Brehm led the men, claiming two victories at the meet. Brehm won the 100m (10.70) and then led a Wildcat sweep of the 200m (21.94). Brehm’s mark in the 100m qualifies him for the IC4As. Graduate student Ben Jenkins (Francestown, N.H./Conval) claimed another title on the track for the men in the 800m while classmate Matt O’Connor (Rhinebeck, N.Y./Rhinebeck) led New Hampshire in the 1,500m as the team swept the top five spots. In the field, senior Anthony Vorachak (Lebanon, N.H./Lebanon) and freshman Garrett Finn (Lebanon, N.H./Lebanon) captured the top spots in both the triple jump and the long jump. Vorachak won the long jump (6.74m) while Finn won the triple jump (13.74m). The men also claimed the top four spots in the hammer throw led by junior Paul DeTurk. DeTurk finished first with an IC4A-qualifying toss of 60.06m, which is the best mark posted by a conference competitor this season. The Wildcats next compete at the Holy Cross Heptathlon on April 14-15.

Stony Brook – The Seawolves continued their outdoor season at the Carolina Classic hosted by the University of North Carolina. Senior Laura Huet (Carrickmines, Ireland/Loreto College Foxrock) led the women, finishing first in the 3,000m in 10:09.22, more than nine seconds better than the second-place finisher. Junior Lucy Van Dalen also earned a top finish for the women, capturing second in the 1,500m. Van Dalen’s time of 4:17.95 is the sixth fastest in the country and third best in the East region. The mark also qualifies her for the ECAC championship in May and puts her atop the conference standings. Sophomore Kristal Conklin (Middletown, N.Y./Valley Central) had a season-best performance in the 800m with a time of 2:14.71. Sophomore Gerard Harley (Setauket, N.Y./Ward Melville) led the men, earning second in the 3,000m after running a personal-best time of 8:33.77. Sophomore Drew Dillingham (Riverhead, N.Y./Riverhead) came in the fourth in the same event (8:42.30). Senior Daire Bermingham (Portmarnock, Ireland/Sutton Park School) narrowly missed the school record in the 1,500m (3:49.35), but qualified for the IC4As. Bermingham’s time is the top posted by a conference competitor this season. Both teams are back in action next weekend when they compete in the Larry Ellis Invitational at Princeton University.

Vermont – At the Dartmouth tri-meet on April 9, both Catamount squads captured second-place finishes. The women claimed five titles at the meet led by senior Aly Millett (Half Moon Bay, Calif./Half Moon Bay), who raced to first in the 800m with a time of 2:21.81. Freshman Julie McGilpin (Westfield, Mass./Westfield) continued her strong rookie season, leading a Vermont sweep of the 1,500m (4:47.10) while fellow newcomer Bo Dunn (Harvard, Mass./Drake) also claimed a victory on the track, placing first in the 5,000m (17:54.66). Sophomore Mari Fourie (Waterloo, Ontario/Ontario Schools) also won a title, finishing first in the 100m hurdles (14.94). Freshman Debbie Isen (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman) earned a title for the Catamounts for the second straight meet, racing to first in the 3,000m steeplechase (11.16.76). The Vermont men also captured five titles at the meet led by senior Justin Scricca (Wethersfield, Conn./Wethersfield), who won the 400m (49.77). Freshman Ryan Sleeper (West Windsor, N.J./West Windsor-Plainsboro) and seniors Doug Maisey (Gwynedd Valley, Pa.) and David Hanss (Ann Arbor, Mich./Ann Arbor Pioneer) claimed three more titles for the men on the track. Sleeper won the 800m (1:54.63) while Maisey and Hanss placed first in the 1,500m (3:43.12) and 400m hurdles (55.76), respectively. Maisey’s mark qualifies him for the IC4As in May. In the field, junior Dan Cheney (Milton, Vt./Milton) claimed the men’s only title, leaping to first in the triple jump (12.23m). Vermont’s multi-event athletes will compete in the Holy Cross Heptathlon on April 14-15. The entire team will return to action at the Middlebury Invitational over the weekend.
