CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- Stony Brook University's Kevin Crowley (New Westminster, British Columbia/New Westminster) and UMBC's Nick Doub (Annapolis, Md./St. Mary's) each led their respective teams to key wins in America East men's lacrosse action last week and have been named Player and Rookie of the Week, respectively. The award winners for the week ending April 11 were announced Monday afternoon.
Crowley, a junior attack, tallied seven points and six ground balls in a 15-12 win over Hartford Saturday. The two-time All-America East selection scored five goals and added a pair of assists in leading the nationally-ranked Seawolves to their third straight victory. Crowley leads the league and ranks third nationally with 4.9 points per game (49). He also ranks second among conference leaders with 31 goals and is tied for third with 18 assists.
Doub, a freshman midfielder, tallied his first three career goals in a pair of games last week. Doub, who was elevated to the first unit at the start of the week, tallied a man-up score late in the third quarter Wednesday against Towson. He followed that performance with two goals and an assist, which all came during UMBC's decisive 7-0 run in a 12-6 win over Binghamton Saturday. The win snapped the Retrievers' six-game losing streak and was the 200th of head coach Don Zimmerman's storied career.
Stony Brook and University at Albany, which downed Vermont, 9-4, on Sunday, sit alone atop the league standings at 2-0 with a month left in the regular season. UMBC and Vermont are a game back at 1-1, while Binghamton and Hartford are still in search of their first league victories.
The Seawolves rose three spots in the USILA Coaches' Poll to No. 14 and remained in the same position in the Nike/Inside Lacrosse Media Poll. The Seawolves, winners of three straight, moved to 2-0 in conference play with a 15-12 win over Hartford Saturday.

Albany (3-8, AE 2-0) posted a 9-4 victory over league-rival Vermont on April 11 just 24 hours after dropped a 19-7 decision to No. 15 Johns Hopkins on the road … the Great Danes, who returned from Baltimore at midnight, played on consecutive days for the first time since April 29-30, 2000 … sophomore Jack Reynolds (Farmingdale, N.Y. / Holy Trinity) had two goals and one assist, all in the third quarter, as his team pulled away in the second half against Vermont … goalkeeper John Carroll (Nesconset, N.Y. / Smithtown East) made 10 of his 11 saves in the opening half … Carroll, who has stopped double-figure shots on 10 occasions this season, made 15 saves the previous day at Johns Hopkins … Matt Johnson (Glenmont, N.Y. / Bethlehem Central) had a pair of goals, including one in the third period on an inside roll from the left … Rocky Bonitatibus (Yorktown Heights, N.Y. / Yorktown) had a career-best two goals, both came in the second quarter … UAlbany is 34-10 all-time in America East Conference regular-season play … Dave Brock (Burlington, Ontario / Nelson) totaled four goals and one assist over the weekend … the senior attack has netted multiple goals 11 times in his UAlbany career … Brian Caufield (Bay Shore, N.Y. / West Islip) climbed into fifth place on the program’s career assists list (70), moving past Hall of Fame Dave Cerny ’86 …Daley Baker (Cleveland Heights, Ohio / Cleveland Heights) scored his first points as a collegian (2 goals) against Johns Hopkins … the Great Danes have faced six national top-20 teams this season … defenseman Brendan Gleason (Wading River, N.Y. / Shoreham-Wading River) had three ground balls in both games last week and has picked up that total eight times during his career … Scott Raffensperger (Altamont, N.Y. / Guilderland) collected a career-high six GBs on April 10 … Mike Banks (Norwalk, Conn. / Brien McMahon) had a career-best three caused turnovers vs. Vermont.
Freshman attack Matt Springer (Hamburg, N.Y./Hamburg) leads Binghamton (3-8, AE 0-2 with 22 goals and 30 points. He is already tied for the fourth-best single-season goal and point totals in Binghamton’s nine-year program history. He has recorded at least one point in each of Binghamton’s 11 games, has seven multiple-goal games and a pair of hat tricks. Furthermore, Springer ranks second in program history with 2.00 goals per game. Springer’s most important point this past week, however, was his assist on the game-winning goal in overtime on April 7 against a Siena squad that made the NCAA Tournament in 2009 … with his goal against UMBC on April 10, senior attack Jeff Rurey (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal) reached the 20-goal mark for the first time in his career. His 20 goals currently ranks sixth in program history for goals in a single season … sophomore face off specialist Jeff Donigan (Skaneateles, N.Y./Skaneateles) currently has 5.36 ground balls per game and is winning 51.3 percent of the draws. His ground ball total is the second-best single-season effort in program history and his face-off winning percentage ranks third among the Bearcats’ single-season leaders … freshman attack Jack Doherty (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Lakeland) had two goals and an assist in Binghamton’s game against Siena on April 7. One of his goals snapped a 3-3 tie with two seconds left in the first half … senior midfielder Drew Wichmann (Syracuse, N.Y./Corconan) had a season-best three assists in the game against Siena.
Hartford (3-7, AE 0-2) could not hold off a second half barrage of Seawolves goals and fell to Stony Brook 15-12 on the road on Saturday evening… The Hawks remain winless in conference play … Sophomore Aidan Genik (Toronto, Ontario/Malvern C.I.) matched a season-best game with six points including five goals and an assist to lead Hartford … The attack has netted five hat tricks this season and totals nine on his career … Justin Bearse (Hyannis, Mass./Barnstable) and Carter Bender (Caledon, Ontario/Brewster Academy) each added two goals while Ryan Compitello (Hauppauge, N.Y./Hauppauge) finished with three assists … The Seawolves came out of the gates and scored four unanswered goals within the first eight minutes of the game to take an early lead, one they would hold onto through the entire first half … The Hawks chipped away and found themselves down one goal at 7-6 at the half … Stony Brook outscored Hartford 5-1 in the third period before a late fourth quarter run for Hawks was held at bay as Hartford never pulled closer than three goals … Sophomores Bender and Compitello are currently riding respective 23 and 22 game scoring streaks … The pair is just two of 22 players in the country who have recorded a point in at least 15 consecutive games … With his first goal of Saturday’s game, Bender joins classmates Genik and Compitello in surpassing the mid-way mark of the 100-point club … Sophomore Scott Bement (Canandaigua, N.Y./Canandaigua) made 11 saves for Hartford … Hartford faces its second-straight ranked opponent when it travels to #17/14 Fairfield for a non-conference match-up on Tuesday, April 13 before returning home to face Vermont on Saturday, April 17.
UMBC (2-7, AE 1-1) sophomore attackman Rob Grimm (Black River, N.Y./Carthage) tied a career-best with three goals, leading the visiting Retrievers to a 12-6 victory over Binghamton in an America East contest… The win was the 200th in the career of UMBC head coach Don Zimmerman… He is now 200-121 in his 24th year as a collegiate mentor. Zimmerman is the 11th active coach to record 200 victories… UMBC evened its America East mark at 1-1 and snapped a six-game slide, improving to 2-7 overall… The 12 goals were a season-high for UMBC and the Retrievers ran their winning streak over Binghamton to ten in a row… The game was tied at 2-2 after one quarter, when UMBC went on a 7-0 run to take a 9-2 advantage with 3:13 remaining in the third period… Freshman midfielder Nick Doub (Annapolis, Md./St. Mary’s) led four other UMBC multiple-point scorers with two goals and one assist… Junior middie Jamie Kimbles (Centreville, Md./Queen Anne’s) and senior attackman Matt Latham (Eldersburg, Md./Liberty) each tallied twice, while freshman midfielder Scott Hopmamn (Annapolis, Md./St. Mary’s) added one goal and one assist… Freshman goalkeeper Adam Cohen (Arnold, Md./The Severn School) made six saves to earn his second win of the season… Junior face-off specialist J.D. Harkey (Purcellville, Va./Loudoun Valley) won 11 of 16 draws…Senior midfielder Kyle Wimer ran his scoring streak to 28 consecutive games (tied for sixth in the nation) with a team-high two goals and two assists at Towson and two helpers at Binghamton… Latham now has 31 goasl in his last 12 America East contests… The 10-7 loss to the Tigers snapped a three-game winning streak by UMBC over Towson… Sophomore close defenders Aaron Verardi (Lutherville, Md./Boys’ Latin) and Tim Shaeffer (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis) earned starts in both games this week and Shaeffer garnered a team-high five ground balls against the Bearcats… UMBC returns to action on Saturday, April 17 when they entertain America East rival Albany… The Retrievers have won three straight in the series and lead it, 7-3 overall.
