Women's Basketball: Tourney Seeds Should Come Into Focus After Saturday's Games

Saturday, February 27
*UMBC at Stony Brook    2 p.m.

  • Stony Brook won the first meeting this year, 74-56 in Baltimore on January 28. The Seawolves got a 24-point, 12-rebound effort out of junior forward Kirsten Jeter in that game.
  • The winner of this game will play Binghamton in the 4-5 quarterfinal game at next week's America East Championship. The team that drops this game will play Boston U. as the six seed.
  • If it comes down to free throws late in a close game, UMBC leads the league in conference games with a .752 mark from the charity stripe. Stony Brook ranks fifth with a .685 mark.


*Vermont at #23 Hartford (CTSN)    4 p.m.

  • The top two teams in the league clash after the first meeting this season resulted in a defensive battle, 38-36, in Hartford's favor. Both teams have been ranked in the AP Top-25 Poll this season.
  • Since their low scoring affair on January 26, Hartford has averaged 66.4 ppg and Vermont has scored 69.4 ppg.
  • Four of the league's top five scorers come from Vermont or Hartford. Catamounts May Kotsopoulos and Courtnay Pilypaitis average 17.8 and 15.0 ppg, respectively, while Hawk Diana Delva has recorded a career-high 14.2 ppg.


*Albany at Maine    7 p.m.

  • The Black Bears can guarantee themselves a seven seed should they win, while Albany will need to win and get some help from Boston U. on Sunday to stay out of the first-round game.
  • Maine won the January 28 contest with Albany, 61-58. In that game, Black Bear sophomores Samantha Wheeler and Samantha Baranowski notched 18 and 16 points, respectively.
  • In conference play, the Great Danes rank second in America East with 39.7 rebounds per game, led by rookie Julie Forster's league-leading 9.4 rpg

*Binghamton 78, at New Hampshire 61   

  • The Bearcats shot over 55% from the field in the second half to outscore the Wildcats, 44-24, in the second frame and finish the regular season on a two-game win streak. Binghamton guaranteed themselves a seed no lower than five.
  • Binghamton sophomore Andrea Holmes poured in 28 points, tying a season high. Junior Jackie Ward and senior Erica Carter each added 14 points apiece and sophomore Viive Rebane scored nine points with a team-high six assists.
  • UNH senior Candace Williams paced the Wildcat offense with 18 points on 8-for-19 shooting.


Wednesday, February 24
*#23 Hartford 63, at Albany 57   

  • The Hawks grinded out a win on the road, their school-record 17th straight win, to lock up sole possession of the regular-season trophy.
  • Hartford senior center Diana Delva scored a season-high 22 points to go with seven boards, two assists, three blocks and three steals. Classmate Erica Beverly finished with 12 points, 11 rebounds, two assists, two blocks and one swipe.
  • The Great Danes led, 29-27, at the half to give the Hawks a scare. Albany sophomore Felicia Johnson netted a team-high 18 points, while freshman Julie Forster picked up 12 rebounds and six steals.


*at UMBC 58, Boston U. 57

  • The Retrievers came back from a 35-16 intermission deficit to outscore the Terriers, 42-22, in the second frame and sweep the season series.
  • UMBC's Carlee Cassidy, who was recognized as the lone senior prior to the game during Senior Night ceremonies, scored a game-high 25 points. She also collected nine rebounds and three assists.
  • Boston U. sophomore Caroline Stewart completed a double-double of 10 points and 14 boards. Freshmen Chantell Alford, Catilynn Moran and sophomore Alex Young also scored in double-figures and combined for nine helpers.
