Women's Basketball: Vermont Hopes To Lock Up Two Seed, While Stony Brook Is Jockeying For Tourney Position

Tuesday, February 23
*Vermont at Stony Brook    7 p.m.

  • The Catamounts, winners of six straight, defeated Stony Brook in Burlington on January 24, 67-45. Vermont senior Courtnay Pilypaitis scored a game-high 21 points in that meeting.
  • A win for Vermont against the Seawolves would lock up the two seed for the tournament, finishing with no worse than a 13-3 record.
  • The Seawolves, who were picked to finish seventh in the preseason poll, have a chance to finish as high as fourth and no lower than sixth. They will enter the tournament with the highest seed since they were seeded second in 2007.


Wednesday, February 24
*#24 Hartford at Albany    7 p.m.

  • The Hawks are looking for the series sweep after taking the first game, 59-36. Hartford is currently riding a school-record long 16 game winning streak, fourth longest in the country. A win for Hartford would give the program the regular-season crown outright.
  • The Great Danes have the third-best scoring defense in the league, 62.0 points allowed per game, only behind Hartford and Vermont. They also lead America East with 9.5 steals per game.

*Boston U. at UMBC    7 p.m.

  • The Retrievers earned the win on January 24 at Case Gym, 65-63. UMBC senior Carlee Cassidy knocked down five treys and finished with a game-high 18 points. Cassidy has 242 career three-pointers to rank third all-time in conference history.
  • In league play, Boston U. tops the ranks with 7.1 three-pointers per game, as well as 28.7 defensive rebounds. Both freshman Chantell Alford and sophomore Alex Young rank among league-leaders with 2.2 and 1.9 three-pointers made per game, respectively.

*Albany 64, at New Hampshire 62 (OT) (WBCA Pink Zone) 

  • The Great Danes moved into a tie with the Wildcats for eighth place, each with a 3-11 conference record. Albany and UNH split the home-and-home series this season, with the visitors winning in each instance.
  • Albany senior Charity Iromuanya poured in a career-high 29 points to go along with six assists and nine rebounds. Rookie Julie Forster collected a career-high 20 rebounds, including eight on the offensive glass.
  • New Hampshire junior Jill McDonald paced the hosts with team highs of 16 points, 10 rebounds and four blocks. She also added two assists and two steals.


*at Vermont 67, UMBC 50 (WCAXtra)

  • The Catamounts's four-team senior class combined for 58 points, 14 rebounds, 16 assists and nine steals on Senior Day. Courtnay Pilypaitis led with 17 points, 10 assists, four rebounds and four steals.
  • Vermont finished with 13 steals and outshot the Retrievers from the floor, .453 to .395.
  • UMBC sophomore Michelle Kurowski led the team with 17 points, eight rebounds and five assists. She also added one block and a 3-for-5 effort from beyond the arc.


*at #24 Hartford 61, Boston U. 38 (WBCA Pink Zone)  

  • The Hawks swept the season series, clinched the top seed and homecourt advantage for the America East Championship, and captured at least a share of the regular-season title. It is Hartford's fourth regular-season title in the last five years.
  • Hartford senior Diana Delva finished with 17 points, 13 rebounds, three assists, two blocks and a steal. She went 11-for-16 from the charity stripe.
  • Both of the Terriers' lowest offensive outputs of the season have come against the Hawks, including a season-low 38 points today. Sophomore Alex Young was one of two Terriers in double-digit points with 13 points. Classmate Caroline Stewart brought down 10 rebounds.
