Stony Brook's Jordan McBride stole the show on men's lacrosse opening day, scoring eight goals and adding two assists in the Seawolves' 21-14 win over Siena, which was both teams' 2010 opener. Elsewhere Saturday, Binghamton knocked off No. 20 Colgate, No. 11 ranked UMBC fell to Delaware, 11-10, in triple overtime, 7-6 and Hartford was downed by No. 17 UMass, 20-10. Albany and Vermont open their seasons Feb. 27.
Stony Brook scored nine of the game's first 10 goals to jump out to a 9-1 lead over Siena, the defending MAAC champions and an NCAA tournament team a year ago. McBride, a two-time first-team all-league choice and preseason All-American, had half his goal total in that stretch. Kevin Crowley, another two-time first-team all-league choice and preseason All-American, added nine points on four goals and five assists. The Seawolves dominated the faceoff circle, winning 29-of-39 draws.
In Vestal,
freshman Tyler Perrelle scored with 8:08 remaining to break a 6-6 tie
and the Bearcats held off the 20th-ranked Red Raiders the rest of the
way. The win was Binghamton's first over a ranked opponent since 2007 and fifth in its nine-year Division I history. Junior
Frank Donlon scored twice and assisted on the game-winner.
Delaware’s
Curtis Dickson’s scored a fluke goal with 1:07 remaining in the third
overtime period to deal UMBC its first loss in a home opener in seven
years. Senior
Kyle Wimer, a preseason All-American, scored three times and added
three assists for the Retrievers. Bobby Stockton also tallied three
goals.
The Minutemen tallied five straight goals to start the game and took a commanding 13-7 advantage into the locker room. Freshman Jared Franz scored four goals in his collegiate debut, while junior Justin Bearse also had four points, finishing with two scores and two assists.
