CAMBRIDGE, Mass.--Both of this week's award winners broke records en route to being named America East Player and Rookie of the Week. University of Vermont senior guard Courtnay Pilypaitis (Ottawa, Ontario/St. Peter) repeats as the Player of the Week after she continued to rewrite the Vermont and America East record books last week. University at Albany's Ebone Henry set a new school single-game scoring mark for a freshman last week to pick up the Rookie of the Week honor.
Pilypaitis led Vermont to a 2-0 week, averaging a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds. She also averaged 3.0 assists and 1.5 steals per game, while shooting 47.8% (11-of-23) from the field and 77.8% (7-of-9) from three-point range.
On Wednesday night against Boston U., the senior posted her second straight double-double with 15 points and 14 rebounds. Then on Saturday, Pilypaitis scored a game-high 19 points, going a perfect 7-for-7 from the floor, and added six rebounds, three assists and two steals against Binghamton. Pilypaitis became the all-time America East leader in three-point field goals when she drained her second three-pointer of the game at the 12:53 mark of the first half. Pilypaitis finished the game with four three's to bring her career total to 248.
Henry led Albany to its first conference win of the season and set career bests in two games last week. The rookie, who entered the week averaging 9.6 points and 5.0 rebounds, first netted 26 points and added a career-high nine rebounds in Albany's 59-52 overtime triumph over Stony Brook. Henry forced the extra session by converting a fastbreak layup in the final minute, and then she scored seven of her team's 11 points in the overtime period to capture the win.
Henry ended the week with a 22-point effort in a four-point loss to Boston U. She matched her career high of nine rebounds and set another career mark by canning five shots from behind the arc. For the week, Henry averaged 24 points, 9.0 rebounds, 2.0 steals and 0.5 assists per game and shot 41.7% (15-of-36) from the field and 57.1% (8-of-14) from three-point range.

Poll Position
Hartford earned the program's first ever national ranking in the most current USA Today/ESPN Coaches' Poll, released last Tuesday. The Hawks received 49 votes to enter the poll at #25, while Vermont continued to earn five points. Both teams have received votes in the polls throughout the entire 2009-10 regular season. In addition, Hartford has garnered a season-high 75 votes in the latest edition of the Associated Press Top-25 Poll announced earlier today. The Catamounts had entered the AP Poll at #24 three weeks ago for the first time since March 15, 1993.
Few Can Say The Same
Now that both Hartford and Vermont have been ranked nationally at some point during the 2009-10 season, the conference has something to boast. America East is one of three non-BCS conferences to have two teams nationally-ranked in women’s basketball this season. The others are the Atlantic-10 (Dayton, Xavier) and Mountain West (TCU, San Diego State). America East and the Atlantic-10 are the only two non-FBS Conferences able to make that claim.
Pulling Away
In first place with a 12-0 record, Hartford has put itself in the driver's seat for the top seed in the tournament and home court advantage for the conference title tilt should the Hawks reach that round. Hartford has won 14 straight games, its longest winning streak since a 15-game streak in 2005-06. The Hawks are one and a half games ahead of second-place Vermont with a 11-2 record, and three games ahead of a young 9-3 Boston U. team. Both the Terriers and Catamounts visit Chase Arena later this month to cap off the regular-season. In conference play, Hartford leads America East with a scoring defense of a mere 43.6 points per game and a scoring margin of +20.6 points.
Television Matchup
For the second time this season, the Hawks and Bearcats will make an appearance on television as part of the America East Television package. From Chase Arena at Hartford on Thursday, February 18, Binghamton and Hartford will tip-off at 7 p.m. on Time Warner Cable, Connecticut Sports Network and ESPN Full Court. The live game will also be available for free at AmericaEast.tv.
Steady Improvement
Stony Brook picked up its eighth win of the season on Saturday and its sixth conference win. The overall win total matches a team best under third-year head coach Michele Cherry, while the six wins in America East play is the most since Cherry took over the helm. The Seawolves have increased their conference win total each year, winning two games in 2008 and four contests in 2009. Stony Brook, which was picked to finish seventh in the preseason poll, now sits in fourth place.
Sitting At The Top
Vermont's Courtnay Pilypaitis (Ottawa, Ontario/St. Peter) broke the league's all-time career mark for three-pointers made with her second of the afternoon on Saturday at Binghamton. She hit two more after that to bring her career total to 248 treys. Pilypaitis passed Northeastern's Melissa Kowalski ('04) for the top spot.
Raining Three's
Also climbing up the career three's made list are UMBC's Carlee Cassidy (Syracuse, N.Y./Westhill) and Binghamton's Erica Carter (Naperville, Ill./Naperville). Cassidy, with 239 long field-goals, leaps into third place, only behind Pilypaitis and Kowalski. Carter jumped into the sixth spot with 212 career three-pointers made. All three are already the all-time leaders at their respective schools and rank 1-2-3 in America East this season.

Vermont senior May Kotsopoulos (Waterloo, Ontario) was named to the five-player 2010 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District I First Team for the second straight year as announced by CoSIDA (College Sports Information Director's of America) on Thursday, February 4. Kotsopoulos, the league's leading scorer, is now eligible to be named a member of the 2010 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Team, which will be released in March, for the second straight season. Kotsopoulos is a business administration major at Vermont and boasts a 3.66 GPA. She was named both the 2008 and 2009 America East Women's Basketball Scholar-Athlete and is a four-year Dean's List student.
Helping Hand
Pilypaitis is also among the league's all-time elite in dishing out assists. She handed out six more assists last week to reach 599 career handouts. That total gives Pilypaitis the program record and puts her third all-time in conference history. Pilypaitis' 500th assist earlier this season made her the first-ever America East player to reach 1,000 points, 500 rebounds and 500 assists.

America East In The RPI Report
This week's edition of Collegiate Basketball News' RPI Report ranks America East 14th among 33 Division conferences, staying even with last week's ranking. In comparison, the league ranked 21st a year ago. The improvement can be heavily attributed to the league's non-conference strength of schedule, which ranked eighth-toughest in the country. Only four other non-FBS conferences rank higher than America East in the RPI: Colonial (8th), Atlantic-10 (10th), Missouri Valley (11th) and WCC (13th). America East teams have a combined 14-11 record against those three leagues, including an 11-6 mark against the A-10. The highest the conference has been ranked in the final RPI is 11th in 2005-06. Last season when the league tied a record with three teams in the postseason, America East finished with an RPI rank of 24.
The Teams In The RPI Report
Hartford (32) remains the highest-ranked America East team in the report. Vermont (45) is also ranked in the top 50. Even this deep into the season, eight of the nine teams are ranked higher in this week's RPI than where they finished in last season's final ranking, with seven of those eight seeing improvements of at least 37 spots.
Against The Best
To get into postseason tournaments - and then succeed in them - you must compete against the best teams. Over a third of the league's non-conference games this year (45 of 113) were against teams which qualified for the NCAA or WNIT postseason tournaments last season. Below is how the league fared against those teams.
vs. NCAA Teams 5-16 (.238)
->wins over Dartmouth (x2), Temple, Sacred Heart, Louisville
vs. WNIT Teams 7-17 (.292)
->wins over Central Conn., Harvard, Boston College, Coppin State, Dayton, Bowling Green, Canisius
vs. All Postseason Teams 12-33 (.267)
Out Of League, Out of Sight
The regular-season non-conference schedule is officially complete with the conference finishing with a 51-62 (.451) record against some of the toughest competition in the country. It is the highest non-conference winning percentage since the 2006-07 season when the league finished at 56-60 (.483).

Freshman Scorers
Whenever a high-scoring rookie such as Boston U.'s Chantell Alford (West Haven, Conn./Wilbur Cross) comes into the league, the question always arises: who is the highest scoring freshman in league history? Alford does currently rank among the highest-scoring freshmen ever in America East, but there have been quite a few talented freshmen in conference history, led by current Maine coach Cindy Blodgett's 20.1 ppg during her rookie campaign.

Season of One-Thousand Scorers
Boston University senior Aly Hinton (Richboro, Pa./Council Rock) became the latest player to reach 1,000 career points, doing so against Binghamton on February 3. Hinton became the fifth player to reach the mark this season, and is the ninth active player in the conference to reach the milestone. Binghamton senior Erica Carter (Naperville, Ill./Naperville) reached it on Monday, January 18 as part of a career night. She scored a career-high 27 points in the Bearcats' victory over the Retrievers to reach the mark. On Sunday, January 24 in Binghamton, New Hampshire senior Amy Simpson (Waterford, Conn./Waterford) accomplished the same feat, scoring eight points to place her at exactly 1,000 points for her career. Carter and Simpson join Hartford's Diana Delva (Stamford, Conn./Westhill) and New Hampshire's Candace Williams (Norfolk, Mass./St. Raphael) as the third and fourth players to eclipse the point total this season.
Clawing Away
Stony Brook junior Kirsten Jeter (Elmont, N.Y./Elmont) sits within striking distance of 1,000 at 992 points. Jeter would become the 10th active player in America East to reach the milestone, and would be the only junior in that elite club.
A Little Unpredictable
Home teams have typically proved to have the upper hand in America East play, owning a 43-29 (.597) record in 2008-09. So far in 2009-10 though, home teams have a winning percentage of just .500 (28-28). Hartford is the only team not to have a conference loss on its home court this year.
Efficiency Is The Name Of The Game
Hartford senior center Diana Delva (Stamford, Conn./Westhill) is on a torrid shooting pace that doesn't seem to let up anytime soon. Delva ranks first in the country in field-goal shooting percentage with a .670 mark, over 13 percent more efficient than the second-best percentage in America East. She is challenging the conference single-season record of .649 set by New Hampshire's Pam Brandell during the 1996-97 season. Through 24 games, Delva is 138-for-206 from the floor while averaging 14.3 points per game.
ALBANY GREAT DANES (8-16, 1-10 AE)
UAlbany earned its first conference victory in a 59-52 overtime triumph over Stony Brook on Feb. 10 before dropping a 69-65 decision to Boston University on Feb. 13… The Great Danes trailed 44-34 with less than eight minutes left against the Seawolves before rallying to end a nine-game losing streak… Ebone Henry (San Diego, Calif./Mater Dei Catholic), who entered the week averaging 9.6 points and 5.0 rebounds, broke Janea Aiken’s Division I single-game program record for points by a freshman… She scored 26 points, including seven in overtime, against the Seawolves and 22 versus the Terriers… Henry (26) had the highest point total by a UAlbany player this season… She also added a career-high nine boards in both contests and made a career-best five shots from the three-point arc in the loss to Boston U.… Janea Aiken, the only UAlbany player to garner all-rookie laurels, held the previous freshman record of 21 points in an 86-62 win over Colgate on Nov. 15, 2007… Julie Forster (Huntington, N.Y./Huntington), who leads all America East freshmen in rebounding (7.8 pg), blocked shots (1.4 pg) and double-doubles (4), is on pace to break the program’s freshman rebounding record (216) which is currently held by Danielle Hutcheson ‘05… Forster has 187 rebounds through 24 games… Senior Charity Iromuanya (Lincoln, Neb./Lincoln) scored 14 points, which included four three-pointers, and set up Henry on a fastbreak to tie the Stony Brook game at 48 apiece at the end of regulation… The senior ranks eighth on the all-time career list in steals (202) … She also ranks third in the league, averaging 2.5 swipes per game this season… Sophomore Felicia Johnson (Newport News, Va./Woodside), who netted 19 against Boston U., is averaging 14.7 points in the last three games.
BINGHAMTON BEARCATS (9-16, 5-7 AE)
Senior guard Erica Carter (Naperville, Ill./Naperville) currently has 1,093 career points and ranks ninth all time in program history. In addition, Carter has 212 career three-point field goals, which ranks second all time in school history. She is four field goals away from tying Bess Greenberg (1997-01) for first place all time in program history with 216 three-point field goals. Carter’s 88 three-point field goals this season is already the program’s single-season record... Sophomore forward Viive Rebane (Talinn, Estonia/Audentes School) is averaging 7.0 rebounds per game. She is on track for the highest single-season average in program history since Rachel Laws averaged 7.4 rebounds per game during the 2004-05 season... Senior forward Darryll Peterson (Baltimore, Md./Bryn Mawr) is averaging 13.7 points and 8.0 rebounds the past three games. Against Vermont on Saturday, she turned in her first career double-double with 15 points and a game-high 10 rebounds.
BOSTON UNIVERSITY TERRIERS (13-11, 9-3 AE)
The Boston University women's basketball team maintained third place in the America East as it split its two games last week. It began the week at Vermont in a 77-59 loss. Sophomore Alex Young (Hickory, N.C./St. Stephen's) led the way with 18 points on 7-for-14 shooting with four treys to earn Boston U.'s America East Player of the Game. Freshman Chantell Alford (West Haven, Conn./Wilbur Cross) added 13 points, backed by a 6-for-6 free-throw shooting performance and classmate Mo Moran (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./John Jay) added 12 points and dished out a team-high five assists. At Albany, Boston U. staged a second-half rally after being down by as many as 14 points, backed by a 17-2 run. In that contest, Alford recorded a game-high 26 points - 21 in the second half alone - and Young added 14, while Moran chipped in 12. This week, the Terriers will host Stony Brook on Wednesday (Feb. 17) at 5:30 p.m. In a pre-game ceremony the Terriers will honor senior Aly Hinton (Richboro, Pa./Council Rock) for reaching the 1,000-point milestone.
HARTFORD HAWKS (21-3, 12-0 AE)
In a week when the Hawks picked up their first-ever national ranking in school history, Hartford scored a 52-39 victory in their only game of the week at Maine… Earlier on game day against Maine, the Hawks learned they had cracked the ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll with 48 votes, enough for 25th in the weekly poll… That ranking came one day after the Hawks saw a record-high 60 votes in the AP Poll released on Monday… Later that night, the Hawks scored their 14th-straight win and remained unbeaten in conference play against the Black Bears at Alfond Arena… Against Maine, Hartford was led by a pair of post players, senior Diana Delva (Stamford, Conn./Westhill) and freshman Ruthanne Doherty (Richmond, Va./L.C. Bird) who finished with 15 and 10 points respectively… Delva extended her team leading field goal percentage to 67 percent (138-of-206), which is currently first in the nation as of February 11… Defensively, Hartford held the Black Bears to just 24 percent from the field (12-of-50), while forcing 21 turnovers, which the Hawks converted into 29 points, while the Black Bears could only muster one point off of Hartford turnovers… The Hawks will play a pair of home games in the coming week, welcoming Binghamton to West Hartford on Thursday at 7 p.m. and Boston University to Chase Arena on Sunday at 4 p.m.… Both games will be televised live on CTSN, while Sunday’s game will be the Hawks annual Pink Zone game, helping to raise awareness for Breast Cancer Research.
MAINE BLACK BEARS (7-18, 3-10 AE)
Maine dropped both conference games last week, falling to both #25 Hartford and Stony Brook. UMaine is coming off a 59-47 loss at Stony Brook Saturday and will play New Hampshire Tuesday in the annual Pink Zone game. The Black Bear defense has been stellar of late and has allowed only one team to score 60 points in the last seven games. Freshman Katelyn Vanderhoff continues to score in double figures and 10.4 points a game in her last five appearances. Sophomore Samantha Wheeler continues to lead the team in scoring (10.8) and rebounding (6.8).
UMBC RETRIEVERS (11-14, 5-7 AE)

The Catamounts defeated Boston U, 77-59, in front of their largest crowd (1,864) since Feb. 28, 2002 at Patrick Gym on Wednesday. Alissa Sheftic (Essex Junction, Vt./Essex) posted her second career double-double and Courtnay Pilypaitis (Ottawa, Ontario/St. Peter) added her second straight double-double (21st of her career) in the victory. At Binghamton, Pilypaitis scored a game-high 19 points and added six rebounds. She was a perfect 7-for-7 from the floor, posting the best shooting performance by a Catamount since Aaron Yantzi went 10-for-10 from the field against Northeastern (Jan. 7, 2002). Pilypaitis also became the all-time America East leader in three-point field goals when she drained her second three-pointer of the game at the 12:53 mark of the first half. The Catamounts have recorded their third straight 20-win season. Vermont won't take the court again until Sunday (Feb. 21) when the Catamounts host UMBC at 1 p.m. Prior to the game UVM will honor its senior class.
