Weekly Awards Come out of New Hampshire and Maine Dual

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The University of New Hampshire and University of Maine squared off in an early season America East dual meet in Durham, N.H. New Hampshire came away with team wins for the both the men’s and women’s squads. With the victories, three New Hampshire student-athletes, senior Josh Kearns (Ridgefield, Conn./Ridgefield), sophomore Cameron Lyle (Plaistow, N.H./Timberlane) and senior Kaitlin Kwiecien (Hampstead, N.H./Pinkerton Academy) earned Performer of the Week accolades. Maine junior Jesse Labreck (Oakland, Maine/Messalonskee) took home the remaining honor.   

Kearns took the Male Track Performer of the Week award as he won an individual event and a team event to lead the Wildcats to a 102-85 win against America East foe Maine on Saturday. The senior finished first in the 1,000 meters in a time of 2:29.97. He also ran the second leg of the 4x800-meter relay team that was victorious in a time of 7:56.50.

Lyle earned the Male Field Performer of the Week nod with first-place finishes in both the weight throw and shot put against Maine on Saturday. The sophomore reached a distance of 16.87 meters in the weight throw and 15.39 meters in the shot put. Both tosses would have been good for fourth place at the 2010 America East Indoor Championship.

Kwiecien grabbed Female Track Performer of the Week honors, posting an individual win and a relay win in a 103-82 win over Maine. Kwiecien finished first in the 500 meters in a time of 1:18.68, and also was part of the 4x400-meter relay team that was victorious in a time of 4:07.18.

Labreck earned Female Field Performer of the Week distinction with a pair of event wins against New Hampshire. Labreck won the high jump with an ECAC-qualifying leap of 1.70 meters. The junior also won the 55 hurdles in a time of 8.10, which also qualified her for the ECAC meet. The winning marks put her among the top three in school history in the respective events.

University at Albany indoor track and field did not compete over the weekend. The Great Danes do not open the 2011 campaign until January 7 at the West Point Invitational.

Binghamton University did not participate in a meet last weekend. Binghamton does not compete again until January 22 at the Cornell Upstate Challenge.

Boston University indoor track and field begins its 2010-11 season January 20 when it hosts a multi-team meet at the Track and Tennis Center.

University of Hartford men’s and women’s track and field teams competed at the Harvard Open on Saturday. The men received a strong performance from junior Andrew Chalmers (Ashland, N.H./Plymouth Regional), who starred in the 3,000-meter event, finishing in second place with a new school record time of 8:41.23. Sophomore Ackeme Brown (Englewood, N.J./Dwight Morrow) had a strong showing in both the track and field events, taking seventh place in the 60-meter dash (7.08), 11th in the 200-meter dash and third in the long jump (6.80-meters). Sprinters Warren Lane (Brooklyn, N.Y./Murry Bergtraum) and Anderson Emerole (Jamaica, N.Y./Manhattan Center for Math and Sciences) took home sixth and eighth place honors in the 400-meter run with times of 50.13 and 50.16, respectively. The duo went on to lead Hartford to a second-place finish in the 4x400-meter relay (3:22.58), just three hundredths of a second behind the winning team. The women’s team was highlighted by freshman Alisha Beeman (Stratford, Conn./Bunnell) as she provided the only victory for the day for Hartford. The rookie’s lift of 1.63 meters gave her a 0.04-meter advantage over the next closest competitor. Beeman then went on to help the women’s 4x400-meter relay team to a fifth place finish (4:11.60). Priscilla Appiagyei (South Windsor, Conn./South Windsor) continued to find success this season as she earned second place with her outstanding showing in the 400-meter run. The sophomore went out in a new school record time of 57.36. Hartford will now enjoy a month off before its next meet. The Hawks return to action on January 22 at the Wesleyan Open.

The University of Maine men’s and women’s indoor track and field teams traveled to Durham, N.H., to open the 2010-11 schedule with a dual meet against America East foe New Hampshire. The Black Bears dropped both meets to the Wildcats with the men falling, 114-75, and the women losing, 102-83. On the track, the men were led by a dominant performance from sophomore James Reed (Garmisch, Germany/Munich International School), who won the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 7.84, more than half a second ahead of the runner-up. The Black Bears also had three wins in the field events. Freshman Nathaniel Meade (Waldoboro, Maine/Medomak Valley) won the triple jump with a top-10 school performance of 13.72 meters while  James Berry (Orono, Maine/Orono) also cracked Maine’s all-time top 10 as he won the pole vault with a mark of 4.42 meters. Senior Trevor England (Auburn, Maine) won the long jump with a leap of 6.57 meters. The women were led by junior Jesse Labreck (Oakland, Maine/Messalonskee), who won the high jump with a leap of 1.70 meters while also winning the 55 hurdles in a time of 8.10. Both marks were good enough to qualify for the ECAC meet and put her among the top three in Maine history in the respective events. The Black Bears also received solid performances from junior Jennifer Lucy (Bangor, Maine/Bangor), who won the 800 meters in a time of 2:19.56, junior Corey Conner (Townsend, Mass./North Middlesex Regional), who won the 1,000 meters with a time of 2:59.62, junior Jillian O’Brien (Buffalo, N.Y.), who won the 200 meters with a time of 26.72 and sophomore Cearha Miller (Oxon Hill, Md.) took the 200 meters with a time of 26.72. Maine is off until January 15 when it travels to Hanover, N.H., for a dual meet against Dartmouth.

UMBC was idle last week. The Retrievers are off until Saturday, Jan. 8 when they return for the Gulden Relays in Lewisburg, Pa.

Lyle swept the throwing events, taking the shot put with a distance of 15.39 meters and winning the weight throw with a toss of 16.87 meters. The Wildcat women received standout performances from senior runner Kaitlin Kwiecien (Hampstead, N.H./Pinkerton Academy) and sophomore thrower Rosemary Read (West Greenwhich, R.I./Warwick). Kwiecien grabbed two first-place finishes, crossing in the 500 meters in a time of 1:18.68, and also running with the 4x400-meter relay team that was victorious in a time of 4:07.18. Read submitted a first-place finish in the weight throw with a toss of 15.27 meters. New Hampshire is off until January 22 when the Wildcats host Holy Cross and Quinnipiac.

Stony Brook University did not have a meet last weekend. The Seawolves continue their season January 22 at the Princeton Relays.

University of Vermont indoor track and field did not compete over the weekend. The Catamounts do not return to the track until January 15 for a tri-meet against Dartmouth and America East foe Maine in Hanover, N.H.
