CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- University at Albany's Tim Ambrose (Brentwood, N.Y./Our Savior New American) and University of Vermont's Brian Voelkel (Pleasantville, N.Y./Iona Prep) have repeated as America East men's basketball Player and Rookie of the Week, respectively. The awards winners for the week ending Dec. 12 were announced Monday afternoon.

Ambrose earned his second straight Player of the Week honor by averaging 18.0 points, 4.5 rebounds and 3.0 assists in a pair of games last week.

The senior guard played a pivotal role Albany's 64-63 win over Central Connecticut Saturday, scoring 22 points on 9-of-13 shooting and making a pair of key plays down the stretch. After his team's 18-point second-half lead had turned into a 60-58 advantage for the Blue Devils, Ambrose anticipated a pass and converted the steal into a layup to tie the score at 60 with 1:02 remaining. He then hit a 10-foot running jumper with eight seconds left to put Albany up 62-60 and secure its fourth win in five games.

The senior guard, who was a third-team all-conference selection in 2009, also had five assists and four steals in the contest. Earlier in the week, he had 15 points and four rebounds in a loss to Yale.
Ambrose has scored in double figures in all 11games this season and ranks fourth among leaders with 17.1 points per game.

Trio of Thrilling Victories
Stony Brook, Binghamton and Albany all won games in thrilling fashion last week. The Seawolves started the trend on Tuesday at Holy Cross. With his team trailing 53-52, freshman Dave Coley drove left from the top of key and exploded to the hoop for a game-winning layup with 2.1 seconds left.

The Bearcats snapped a six-game losing streak in similar fashion Saturday. Trailing 69-68 and with time winding down at Manhattan, sophomore Jimmy Gray scored his first points of the game on a 10-foot jumper with 4.5 seconds left to give his team the 70-69 win.

America East Player of the Week Tim Ambrose earned his award by sealing Albany's 64-63 win over Central Conn. State Sunday.

Black Bears Get Defensive
Maine went 19-11 a year ago and held opponents to 62.1 points per game. That defensive prowess had not carried over to this season until this week. The Black Bears snapped a four-game losing skid with wins over UMass and Norfolk State and held their opponents to 56 and 54 points, respectively. Comparitivley, Maine allowed opponents to average 72.5 points per game in its first seven games and went 2-5 in that stretch.

Growing Great Danes
Albany went 7-25 last season and with just two upper classmen on its roster, the Great Danes were picked eighth in the league's preseason poll. But after an 0-3 start, Albany has won five of its last eight, including four of its last five, and posted a thrilling 64-63 win over Central Connecticut State on Saturday.

Ranking Recognition for the Cats
Vermont was rated 42nd out of 343 teams in the second official Ratings Percentage Index (RPI) report issued by RPIRatings.com. The Catamounts were also ranked 14th in the Mid Major Top 25 issued on Dec. 6. Expect the Catamounts to climb a few spots in that poll this week.

Rising Up the Charts
A pair of America East standouts are charging up the league's all-time scoring list and will finish among the all-time greats. Boston University senior John Holland, a two-time first team all-conference selection, moved into 20th all-time and currently has 1,750 career points. Holland passed former Northeastern star Jose Juan Barea, who currently plays for the Dallas Mavericks and former Indiana Pacer Norman Richardson earlier this season. Hartford's Joe Zeglinski, a two-time all-league choice, moved up to 21st on the list following his career-high 31 points against Monmouth. The senior guard has 1,736 career points.

Milestone Win for Herrion
New Hampshire head coach Bill Herrion picked up his 300th career win on Dec. 4 when his Wildcats beat Colgate, 65-60. Herrion has earned 230 of those wins while coaching at an America East school. He won 167 games and three conference titles at Drexel in the 1990's and has 63 wins in five-plus seasons at UNH.

Catching the Injury Bug
Two of America East's 10 returning all-conference players are out indefinitely. Stony Brook's Tommy Brenton and New Hampshire's Alvin Abreu, both second-team all-league choices last season, both suffered knee injuries that will threaten their seasons. Brenton's happened in September, while Abreu's injury came against Dartmouth Nov. 18.
