The Stony Brook University women's cross country team competed
in the NCAA National Championship Meet in Terre Haute, Ind., Monday afternoon,
finishing seventh overall out of 31 teams. The Seawolves amassed 334 points on
their way to earning their highest national championship finish in school
history.
The Seawolves were paced by senior sisters Lucy and Holly
Van Dalen (Wanganui, New Zealand/Wanganui Collegiate). The duo, which finished
first and second in both the America East Championship meet and the NCAA
Northeast Regional meet, finished sixth and seventh, respectively. Lucy
finished just one tenth of a second ahead of Holly, navigating the 6k course in
20:19.2 compared to Holly's 20:19.3. With those finishes, the sisters earned
All-America honors while scoring five and six points for the Seawolves.
Freshman Annie Keown and junior Hayley Green also finished
in the top 100, earning 70 and 72 points for the Seawolves, respectively.
Freshman Olivia Burns took 181 points, finishing 219th overall, to
round out Stony Brook's scorers.
Also representing America East in the women's race was
University of Maine junior Corey Conner (Townsend, Mass./North Middlesex
Regional), who finished 42nd overall, posting a time of 20:54.0. In
the men's race, Binghamton University senior Erik van Ingen finished 43rd
overall, completing the 10k race in 30:35.7. Both Conner and van Ingen (Marathon,
N.Y./Marathon/Canisius), who ran in last season's NCAA championship meet as
individuals, narrowly missed earning All-America honors, which are given to
those individuals finishing in the top 40 overall.
