CAMBRIDGE, Mass.— Twenty-one America East student-athletes, both men and women, have been named to the 2010 Cross Country All-Academic teams. These student-athletes have stood out both athletically and academically as they represent the best of the America East conference.
The women’s team is highlighted by the top four finishers at the 2010 America East Championship meet. Stony Brook University seniors Lucy Van Dalen and Holly Van Dalen and junior Hayley Green finished first, second and fourth, respectively, at the championship. They are joined by University of Maine junior Corey Conner, who finished third at the championship. Each of those four are repeat All-Academic honorees as well as earning All-Conference accolades.
Also earning All-Academic distinction are repeat honorees Boston University junior Katie Matthews, UMBC senior Sara Parkinson and University of Vermont junior Morgan Powers. Matthews and Powers also earned All-Conference distinction in 2010. Rounding out the team are first-time All-Academic selections Whitney Chamberlain, a sophomore from Maine, Kristal Conklin, a junior from Stony Brook, and Emily Finnegan, a sophomore from the University at Albany.
The men’s squad features five repeat selections to the All-Academic team and four 2010 All-Conference selections. Maine graduate student Corey Bean, Binghamton University graduate student Chris Gaube, Boston U. junior Joe Greenspun, Binghamton senior Adam Quinn and teammate and classmate Andrew Ugolino were members of the 2009 All-Academic team. Gaube, Albany teammates junior Paul Lagno and sophomore Alex Leuchanka and Vermont junior John Little also appear on the All-Conference squad.
UMBC senior Michael Christmas, Stony Brook junior Drew Dillingham and Maine senior Chris Harmon complete the 2010 All-Academic selections.
The All-Academic squads are a product of the June 2005 Athletics Director meetings, where faculty representatives and athletics directors from each of the conference’s nine member institutions decided to honor the league’s top student-athletes, whom excel equally in the classroom as they do on the playing field.
For the third straight year, America East will select the All-Academic teams using CoSIDA’s Academic All-America program as a model. Student-athletes worthy of consideration are nominated by member sports information directors and voted on by a committee of SIDs, academic advisors and faculty representatives from all nine member institutions.
All-Academic squads for team sports are based on the number of athletes that participate in a contest at one time or are made up of 10 student-athletes for individual sports. To be nominated for the distinction, student-athletes must be a starter or important reserve for their team and participate in at least 50 percent of their team’s games or competitions. In the classroom, student-athletes must have a 3.30 GPA and have completed at least one calendar year at their institution. Freshmen are not eligible for consideration.
