TOWSON, Md. -- Boston University standout student-athlete Ben Havey was named to the ESPN Academic All-America Men's Soccer Team as chosen by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), the organization announced today. Havey was a second-team choice.
Havey, a senior captain from Preston, England, earned second-team All America East honors and helped the Terriers capture their 10th regular season title this year. The midfielder tied for third among league leaders in assists (5), deadlocked for sixth in points (15) and ranked ninth in goals (5). Havey was an America East All-Academic selection and has been a Commissioner's Honor Roll honoree.
Havey is the third America East men's soccer player in as many seasons to receive Academic All-America recognition. Vermont's Conner Tobin was a first-team choice in 2008, while Boston U.'s Dan Schultz was a third-team choice that year. Last year, seven America East student-athletes earned Academic All-America honors, the league's most since the 2005-06 academic year.
To be nominated for Academic All-America recognition, the student-athlete must be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.30 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) for his/her career. No athlete is eligible until he/she has reached sophomore athletic and academic standing at his/her current institution (thus, true freshmen, red-shirt freshmen and ineligible transfers are not eligible). In the cases of transfers, graduate students and junior college graduates, the athlete must have completed one full academic year at the nominating institution to be eligible.
CoSIDA selects Academic All-America teams in 12 programs: football, women's volleyball, men's soccer, women's soccer, men's basketball, women's basketball, baseball, softball, men's track & field/cross country, women's track & field/cross country, men's at-large and women's at-large.
