One Retriever, Three Terriers Take Weekly Honors

CAMBRIDGE, Mass.—UMBC senior Brad Reitz (Ellicott City, Md./Howard) earned the Male Swimmer of the Week honor while a trio of Boston University student-athletes, sophomore Jake Frankenfeld (Minnetoka, Minn./Minnetonka), junior Amanda Scmitz (Pleasanton, Calif./Foothill) and sophomore Melinda Matyas (Budapest, Hungary/Eotvos Jozsef Gimnazium), took Male Diver of the Week, Female Swimmer of the Week and Female Diver of the Week accolades, respectively. Each of the four helped lead their teams to two victories over the weekend.

Reitz earned four first-place finishes against Maryland and Towson Saturday, winning the 100-yard butterfly (50.26), 200 fly (1:50.94) and 200 IM (1:54.58), all of which were UMBC season-best times. All three times were also career-best dual meet times for Reitz. The senior was also a part of the 200 medley relay team that touched first in 1:34.68.

Frankenfield had a solid weekend, winning three events, including a sweep of the diving events on Friday at Stony Brook. He won the one-meter dive with a score of 227.83 and the three-meter dive with a score of 213.52 before winning the three-meter dive (261.00) at Fordham on Saturday.

Schmitz won five events in two meets over the weekend. Beginning on Friday at Stony Brook, the junior won the 1,000 free in 10:32.63 and then took the 200 fly in 2:07.08. On Saturday at Fordham, she was able to top Friday’s performance, earning three wins. The first came in the 200 fly (2:02.72), followed by the 500 free (5:02.01) and the 200 IM (2:08.33).

Matyas won all four of her events over the weekend. On Friday, she claimed the one-meter dive with a score of 259.50 and the three-meter dive with a score of 270.00. The sophomore repeated the feat on Saturday with scores of 264.75 on the one-meter dive and 303.60 on the three-meter dive.

Binghamton University swimming and diving traveled to Philadelphia, Pa., last Saturday for a meet against Drexel. It was a successful meet for the Bearcats, as both the men’s and women’s teams won. The men won, 168.5-129.5, while the women scored a 172.5-125.5 victory. The Bearcat men fell behind early, losing the first four events, but were able to climb back into the meet and secure the win. Jason Chen (Livingston, N.J./Livingston) and Joe Perez-Rogers (Woodstock, N.Y./Woodstock) placed first and second in the 100 free for Binghamton, respectively. Sophomore Josh Saccurato (Chappaqua, N.Y./Horace Greeley) touched first in the 200 individual medley. The foursome of Chen, Perez-Rogers, Phil Dzieniszewski (Queens, N.Y./Benjamin Cardozo) and Morgan Lloyd (Placerville, Calif./Union Mine) won the 200 medley relay for the Bearcats. Binghamton notched its fourth straight victory over Drexel dating back to the 2005-06 season. The women’s team grabbed its second straight win of the season. Amanda Ciccone (Suffern, N.Y./Suffern) won the 50 free for the Bearcats. The trio of Tiffany Siu (Hong Kong, China/S.T.F.A. Leung Kau Kui), Caitlin Nelson (Florham Park, N.J./Hanover Park) and Lauri Crimmins (Big Flats, N.Y./Horseheads) finished one, two and three in the 100 free to sweep the event and earn huge points for Binghamton. The win marks the third consecutive victory over Drexel for the Binghamton women. Binghamton will host the Marist men and women at the Patricia A. Saunders Aquatic Center on Saturday, November 20 at 1 p.m.

Boston University swimming and diving had two meets over the weekend, taking on Stony Brook on Friday and Fordham on Saturday on both the men’s and women’s sides. Each team won both of its meets. The men’s team topped Stony Brook, 141-90, before taking down Fordham, 186.5-107.5. The women’s team took its meets, 144-96, over Stony Brook, and 172-126, over Fordham. The men were led by senior Kyle Ernst (Seekonk, Mass./Seekonk), who won the 500 free with a time of 4:46.33 against Stony Brook and then won the 100- and 200-yard breaststrokes as well as the 200 individual medley with times of 58.48, 2:06.32 and 1:57.50, respectively, against Fordham. Freshman Jeff Thomas (Foxboro, Mass./Bishop Feehan) also touched first in three events against the Rams, taking first in the 200 fly, 500 free and 1,000 free. Sophomore diver Jake Frankenfield also had a good weekend, sweeping the one- and three-meter dives on Friday at Stony Brook with scores of 227.83 and 213.52, respectively before winning the three-meter dive with a score of 261.00 at Fordham. The women were led by Amanda Schmitz. Against Stony Brook, the junior won the 1,000 free in 10:32.63 and the 200 fly in 2:07.08. Against Fordham, she earned three wins, touching first in the 200 fly (2:02.72), the 500 free (5:02.01) and the 200 IM (2:08.33). The Terrier divers were led by sophomore Melinda Matyas, who swept her four events over the weekend. She repeated the feat on Saturday with scores of 264.75 and 303.60, on the one- and three-meter dives, respectively. The Terriers return to the pool this weekend as they host the Terrier Invitational, November 19-21.

University of Maine swimming and diving traveled to Keene State over the weekend. The men’s team fell to Keene State, 181-105. The women’s team faced Keene State and Vermont, topping Keene State, 175-119, but losing to Vermont, 192-105.On the men’s side, the Black Bears took home the top two spots in the 200-yard breaststroke. Brian Landry (Yorktown, Va./Hampton Roads Academy) won the event with a 2:18.77. Landry also finished second in the 100-yard breaststroke event with a final time of 1:03.49. Travis Wibby (South Portland, Maine/South Portland) turned in a strong performance for Maine on the diving boards as he won the three-meter event with a score of 129.65. Wibby also was strong in the one-meter as he took home second place honors with a score of 208.30. Yuri Chornobil (Rochester, N.Y./ Brighton) placed second in the 1000-yard freestyle event with a time of 9:58.34. He was followed up by Jeremy Bender (St. Paul, Minn./Highland Park) who placed third in 10:11.56. Bender also placed second in the 200-yard fly at 2:01.58. The Black Bear relay teams both had solid days, taking home a pair of second place finishes. James Forest (Columbia, Md./Atholton), Landry, Andrew Mackeil (Biddeford, Maine/Biddeford) and Daniel Duvall (Durham, N.H./ Oyster River) placed second in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:41.72. The team of Andrew Meehan (Brewer, Maine/Brewer), Duvall, Dan MacDonald (Melrose, Mass./Northeast Metro Vocational), and Roy Warren Jr. (North Palm Beach, Fla./Benjamin School) took home second place in the 400 freestyle relay with a final time of 3:22.88. The Maine women were led by freshman diver Kara Capossela (Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich). Capossela was first in the one-meter with a score of 235.85 and also took home first-place in the three-meter with a score of 238.75. The Black Bears swept the top three spots in the three meter with Capossela winning, followed by Juliet Cobb (Bangor, Maine/Bangor) with a score of 192.90 and Ashley Higgins (Bangor, Maine/Bangor) who took third place with a score of 166.20. Caitlin Shelley (Charlottesville, Va./Western Albemarie) had a solid day of swimming for the Black Bears. Shelley placed second in both the 200 IM (2:19.82) and the 200-yard breaststroke (2:30.78). Shelley also picked up a third place finish in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:10.16. Shannon Bender (Cumberland, R.I./Lincoln) placed second in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:19.81. Bender also placed third in both the 200-yard IM (2:19.82) and the 1000-yard freestyle (10:53.64). The Black Bears placed second and third in the 50-yard freestyle event as Emily Puleio (Saco, Maine) placed second with a time of 25.42 and Lauren Dwyer (Orono, Maine/Orono) was third at 25.66. Maine finished the meet strong as the team of Helaina Sacco (Rochester, Mass./Old Rochester Regional), Courtney Mellish (Barrie, Ontario), Dwyer and Puleio won the 400 freestyle relay with a time of 3:42.55. Maine returns to action  on December 3-4 at the URI Invitational.

UMBC swimming and diving competed in a tri-meet with local rivals Maryland and Towson on Saturday in College Park, Md. The men’s team won both of its meets, topping the Terps, 172-114, and the Tigers, 201-61. The women dropped their two matchups, falling to the Terps, 240-60, and the Tigers, 214.50-85.50. For the men, senior Brad Reitz won four events, including all three of his individual events, taking the 100-yard butterfly (50.26), 200 fly (1:50.94) and 200 individual medley (1:54.58), all of which were UMBC season-best times. Freshman Johan Rohtla (Tallinn, Estonia/Tallinn Secondary Science) continued his impressive first year, winning the 200 backstroke in 1:49.62, the fourth-fastest time in school history, while placing first in the 100 back in 50.89, the ninth-fastest all-time mark at UMBC. Other multiple winners included senior Eric Jones (Gambrills, Md./Arundel), who touched first in the 50 free (21.39) and the 200 free (1:43.79), and sophomore transfer Pierre De Waal (Pretoria, South Africa/Tuks Sport/Cleveland State), who won the 500 free and 1,000 free in 4:41.74 and 9:46.28, respectively. Despite the losses, the women set 10 season-best times, including sophomore Jennifer Kotonias (Burtonsville, Md./Academy of Holy Cross) in the 200 fly (2:04.80) and sophomore transfer Claire Barron (Lowestoft, England/Benjamin Britten/New Orleans) in the 100 breast (1:07.18), both of which are the 10th-fastest times in school history. In addition, the 400-yard free relay of freshman Erika Ronning (Western Springs, Ill./Lyons Township), junior Ashley Sippel (Rockville, Md./Thomas Wootton), senior Danielle Cruz (Catonsville, Md./Western Tech) and junior Ashley Miller (New Smyrna Beach, Fla./New Smyrna Beach) set a UMBC season-best time of 3:34.37. The Retrievers return to action next weekend when they take part in the Patriot Invitational in Fairfax, Va., Friday through Sunday.

The University of New Hampshire women’s swimming and diving team earned a 168-117 victory over the University of Rhode Island on Saturday, placing first in 14 of 16 events to remain unbeaten on the season. Amy Perrault (Kirkland Lake, Ontario/Ecole Catholique) broke a five-year pool record in the 100-yard backstroke, finishing with a time of 56.32 seconds. New Hampshire earned the top three spots in the event, with Katie Keefer (Waynesboro, Pa./Waynesboro) and Anna Gryglewska (Norwalk, Conn./Norwalk) claiming second (1:02.62) and third (1:03.36) place, respectively. The ‘Cats earned the top two spots in the 200-yard butterfly, with Lauren McCandless (Macungie, Pa./Emmaus) grabbing first and Kiersten Wollenzien (Holland Landing, Ontario/Dr. John M. Denison) taking second place. McCandless touched first at 2:06.37 while Wollenzien finished in 2:11.88. Shelli Reed (Hartland, Wisc./San Benito) and Sydney Tribou (Belle Island, Fla./Lake Highland Prep) added first and second-place finishes in the 100-yard freestyle with times of 52.33 and 55.05, respectively. Jenna Bull (Woodstock, New Brunswick/Harbord Collegiate Institute) and Wollenzien teamed up to grab first and second-place in the 200-yard backstroke, respectively. Bull snagged first with a time of 2:08.46 and Wollenzien claimed second place, touching down at 2:11.09. McCandless (5:03.68) and Perrault (5:07.41) were at it again late in the action, giving the home squad a late push, earning first and second in the 500-yard freestyle. The Wildcats return to action on November 19 when they travel to Boston University for the Terrier Invitational.

Stony Brook University swimming and diving squared off against Boston U. last weekend. Both the men and the women fell to the Terriers, the men by a score of 141-90 and the women by a score of 144-96. For the men, Sean Conway (Oakdale, N.Y./Connetquot) earned three victories on the day, including two individual wins in the 50 freestyle (21.99) and 100 freestyle. His time of 47.44 in the 100 free is a team-best this season. Conway then helped the Seawolves win the 400 freestyle relay as the quartet of Conway, Ed McIntyre (Laurel, N.Y./Mattituck), Lukasz Ochmanski (Lodz, Poland/Kosciuszko Memorial) and Derek Woodhead () registered a season-best time of 3:13.02 (another season record). For the women, freshman Renee Deschenes (Winnipeg, Manitoba/College Louis-Riel) earned one victory on the day with a win in the 200 backstroke (2:04.67). The time fell just .17 seconds shy of tying her season-best in the event. Freshman Veronica Reid (Duncan, British Columbia/Cowichan Secondary) was also victorious, winning the 200 breaststroke (2:25.49). Stony Brook’s 400 freestyle relay team also earned a win (3:41.69) to give the Seawolves three victories on the day. Stony Brook’s next meet will the ECAC meet in East Meadow, N.Y., December 3-5.

University of Vermont swimming and diving participated in a tri-meet with Keene State and Maine. The Catamounts won both meets, topping Maine, 175-119, and Keene State, 189-95, on Saturday afternoon in Keene, N.H. Senior Kate Weaver (South Burlington, Vt./South Burlington) earned three victories. Weaver won the 200 medley relay in a time of 1:51.33, as the Cats took the top four spots in the event. She would also win the 200 free (1:55.80), leading a podium sweep in the event for Vermont, and the 200 backstroke (2:07.38).  Kailey Gardner (Ithaca, N.Y./Ithaca), Avery Pittman (Raleigh, N.C./Enloe) and Caitlin Dowd (Setauket, N.Y./Ward Melville) each won twice as the Cats improve to 6-1 on the season. Weaver won the 200 medley relay in a time of 1:51.33, as the Cats took the top four spots in the event. She would also win the 200 free (1:55.80), leading a one-two-three Vermont finish, and the 200 backstroke (2:07.38). Gardner stayed undefeated in the 1,000 freestyle with a time of 10:28.93 and she also took the 200 IM in 2:11.28. Pittman helped the Catamounts sweep the 200 butterfly by winning the event in 2:12.09 and then came back to sweep the fly events by earning a first in the 100 (1:00.28) as well. Dowd swept the backstroke events as she won the 100 (1:09.22) and 200 (2:29.66). Also earning victories for Vermont were freshman Emily Alexander (Stittsville, Ontario/Sacred Heart) in the 100 backstroke (1:00.57) and junior Katie Heenan (Clarendon Hills, Ill./Hinsdale Central) in the 500 free (5:17.88). The Catamount divers will be in action on Saturday at a meet at Holy Cross that starts at 2 p.m., while the full squad will be at Bryant on November 21 at 1 p.m.
