NEWTON, Mass. -- Two second-half goals gave second-seeded Boston College (14-6-1) all the offense it would need as it defeated the No. 17 Boston University women's soccer team in the first round of the NCAA tournament at BC's Newton Campus Soccer Field on Friday night. Junior Tiya Gallegos tallied Boston U.'s lone goal of the game as the Terriers finish their season with a 16-6 overall record.

BU, which broke school records for wins in a season (16), goals (50), shutouts (15) and consecutive shutouts (13), outshot BC, 12-8, and forced Jill Mastroianni to make three saves.

Graduate student Lisa Kevorkian led with four shots, followed by junior Jessica Luscinski and Gallegos with two shots a piece. Goalkeepers Kelly King and Alice Binns split time in net. King was not tested in the first half, and Binns made two spectacular stops in the second half.

Gallegos scored in the 13th minute when she followed up on a rebound off her own shot. Junior Krista Minto had sent a cross into the 18-yard box that Gallegos one-timed toward Mastroianni, who kick-saved it. Gallegos followed up on the rebound and drilled it into the netting for her eighth goal of the year.

Throughout the rest of the first half, the Terriers played outstanding defense as they allowed just one off-target shot and the Eagles barely got a sniff of the 18-yard box. BU was able to control the tempo of the game during the first 45 minutes and wear down BC's defense.

In the second half, the Eagles came out firing on all cylinders, taking it to BU's defense from the get-go and drawing two corner kicks within the first 15 minutes.

Binns came up big in the second half, making two shutout-preserving saves as the first came when she made a diving save with 20 minutes remaining in regulation and the next came five minutes later as she made a leaping save to her right that she corralled mid-air.

However, in the 77th minute, BC's Victoria DiMartino knotted the game 1-1, when she bent it from the upper far post to break BU's 1,260:38 shutout streak. Five minutes later, Julia Bouchelle upped the Eagles' lead to 2-1 with her first goal of the year.

BC advances to Sunday's NCAA second round game, which will be held at the Newton Campus Soccer Field.
