Championship Primer

• A first-time America East champion will be crowned on Saturday when No. 2 UMBC and No. 5 New Hampshire square off in the America East Men’s Soccer Championship game.

• UMBC is making its second straight title game appearance after falling to Stony Brook in last year’s final, 2-1.

• This will be New Hampshire’s first America East championship game since 1994. The Wildcats fell to Boston U., 3-1, that year and also dropped the ‘93 title game to the Terriers by the same score.

• UMBC and UNH are meeting for the second consecutive year in the tournament. Last season, the Retrievers were the No. 5 seed and upset the top-seeded Wildcats, 2-1, in Durham. Mark Lubetkin and Milo Kapor tallied first-half goals for UMBC. The two teams played to a scoreless tie earlier this season.

• A pair of tournament records were equaled in Tuesday’s semifinals. UMBC’s Levi Houapeu became the 11th player, and first since 2006, to score twice in an America East Championship game. UNH’s Colin O’Donnell recorded his second shutout of the championship and is just the fourth player to ever blank multiple foes in the same tournament.

• This game pits one of the nation’s best offenses and one of its top defenses against each other. UMBC ranks among national leaders with 2.00 goals per game, while UNH is among the country’s best in goals allowed, just 0.58 per contest.
