2010-11 Men's Basketball Season Starts Today

The 2010-11 America East men's basketball season is finally here! Four teams begin their seasons tonight and all nine open this weekend.

Boston U. at Northeastern, 7 p.m. -- Live Stats | Boston U. Radio | Live Video

  • The preaseason favorites in America East, Boston U. won 21 games, reached its first league title game since 2003 and advanced to the semifinals of the College Basketball Invitational last season.
  • Senior John Holland and junior Jake O’Brien both preseason all-conference selections, form one of the top tandems in the league after ranking first and 11th among league leaders in scoring last season, respectively.
  • The Terriers have won back-to-back meetings with their crosstown-rivals, including a 69-64 OT decision last season. Jake O'Brien has averaged 19.5 ppg in two career games against the Huskies.
            
Stony Brook at Connecticut, 7 p.m. (SNY/ESPN3) -- ESPN 3 | Stony Brook Radio
  • Stony Brook enjoyed its most successful season in Divsion I school history last year, winning a Division I program-record 22 games and its first America East regular-season title and making their first-ever postseason appearance (NIT).
  • Bryan Dougher, a second-team all-conference choice last year, ranked 10th in scoring and shot 42.4 percent from three-point territory. He'll be called on to replace America East Player of the Year Muhammad El-Amin, who graduated and Tommy Brenton, the league's leading rebounder, who is out indefinitely with an injury.
  • Stony Brook opens its 2010-11 campaign with UConn, where head coach Steve Pikiell served as a two-year captain for Jim Calhoun.   
Cornell at Albany, 7:30 p.m. --  Live Stats | Albany Radio | Live Video
  • Albany hopes to rebound from a season in which it posted a 7-25 overall record and a 2-14 mark in conference play.
  • The Great Danes will be led by a group of sophomores, including Mike Black, an All-Rookie selection last season, who averaged 10.4 points and 3.7 assists in conference play.
  • Logan Aronhalt and Blake Metcalf are just the third and fourth sophomores in team history to be named captains.
  • Albany is 3-0 all-time against Cornell and posted a 78-75 victory when the two teams last met in 2006.

Maine at Utah Valley University, 9 p.m.  Live Stats | Maine Radio | Live Video 
  • The Black Bears return eight letterwinners, from a team that won 19 games and finished third in the league standings for the first time in 10 years.
  • Maine led the league in scoring defense (62.9 ppg) and FG percentage defense (.395), which also ranked 19th in the nation, last year. The Black Bears were even better in conference play, holding foes to 59.6 ppg and a 38.2 percent shooting clip.
  • Gerald McLemore became the first Black Bear to earn first-team all-league recognition since 2003 after he averaged 14.6 ppg last season.
  • Maine opens its season with a first-ever visit to Utah Valley Univ. before traveling to Maryland for the meeting with the Terrapins Sunday.
