Four Teams Secure Wins in Women's Soccer Action

Every gameday throughout the 2010 season, America East will provide a women's soccer update that  previews the day's matchups as well as recaps the previous day's action. The update will also provide links to live coverage, box scores and highlights of select games. Albany 2, New Hampshire 1- Box Score

The Albany Great Danes (6-6-1, 1-1-1 America East) picked up a thrilling 2-1 home victory over the visiting New Hampshire Wildcats (5-6-3, 1-2-0 America East)

Despite being on the defensive for much of the game, New Hampshire found itself with the lead in the 28th minute of action. Junior midfielder Stephanie Gilkenson gave the Wildcats the surprising lead when she finished off a cross from sophomore forward Chelsea Kuss. However, the Great Danes responded almost immediately, when sophomore forward Shayla Bergeron netted her sixth goal of the season. The game appeared headed to overtime until Bergeron struck again with only two minutes remaining on the clock. Bergeron, who leads the Great Danes with seven goals this season, took advantage of a bobbled ball from New Hampshire freshman goalkeeper Erica Correa to seal the win.

Albany returns to action on October 10 with a visit to Binghamton. New Hampshire will hope to rebound from the loss when it travels to Maine on the same day.

 

Maine 1, UMBC 0- Box Score

In the opening game of its three-game homestead, UMBC (2-10-1, 1-3-0 America East) fell 1-0 to Maine (6-4-0, 2-1-0 America East).

A goal in the first minute of action was the only offense that Maine needed to pull out the key road victory. Junior forward Courtney Harnais found the back of the net off an excellent pass from freshman midfielder Nikki Misener to score the game-winning goal. Following the early goal, both sides played defensive soccer, with each team attempting only seven shots. The Retrievers were led in attack by freshman midfielder Nicole Clark, as she attempted two shots in the loss.

UMBC will continue its homestead with a visit from Stony Brook on October 10. Maine returns home to host New Hampshire on the same day.

 

Boston University 3, Hartford 0- Box Score

Boston University (9-5-0, 4-0-0 America East) continued its dominant start to America East play with an impressive 3-0 victory at Hartford (4-7-3, 1-1-2 America East)

The Terriers used an early goal to steal away the momentum from the Hawks. Junior midfielder Tiya Gallegos opened the scoring with a goal in the fifth minute of action. Boston University extended its lead in the 31st minute when junior forward Jessica Luscinski scored off a tremendous free kick from 30 yards out.  The Terriers secured the win in the 60th minute courtesy of a goal from senior defender Corie Halasz. Sophomore midfielder Amelia Pereira led Hartford in attack, attempting two shots in the shutout loss.

Boston University continues its four-game road trip with a visit to Vermont on October 10. Hartford returns to action on October 14 with a trip to Vermont.

 

Stony Brook 3, Vermont 0- Box Score

Stony Brook (3-8-2, 2-1-1 America East) earned an impressive 3-0 home victory over the visiting Vermont Catamounts (2-11-0, 1-3-0 America East)

After an aggressive opening to the game, the Seawolves were rewarded with the opening goal in the 20th minute. Sophomore midfielder Taryn Schoenbeck gave Stony Brook the lead with her second goal of the season. The Seawolves added to their lead early in the second half when junior midfielder Dominique Adamo scored in the 54th minute. Freshman midfielder Larissa Nysch closed out the scoring with 12 minutes remaining, as she netted the first goal of her career. Vermont sophomore goalkeeper Alyssa Kelly put together a strong effort in the net, making seven saves.

Stony Brook kicks off a two-game road trip with a visit to UMBC on October 10. Vermont opens a two-game homestand with a visit from Boston University on the same day.
