Boston U., Hartford and Vermont win America East Openers

Saturday, October 2

Boston U. 2, Stony Brook 1 -- Box Score

Boston University (6-3-1, 1-0-0 America East) headed to Long Island to take on Stony Brook (6-5-1, 0-1-0 America East) in a match between two of the hottest teams in America East.

Coming into the match, the Terriers had won their last two matches by a combined score of 5-1. The Seawolves were riding a six-game unbeaten streak.

The match was scoreless into the second half. Boston U. Senior forward Aaron O’Neal broke the scoreless tie in the 60th minute, directing a cross from junior forward Stephen Knox into the net, giving the Terriers a 1-0 lead. Junior back Ben Berube broke the match open nine minutes later when he scored his fourth goal in the last three matches in the 69th minute.   

Stony Brook never backed down despite trailing by two goals. Sophomore Leonardo Fernandes converted a penalty kick in the 90th minute, making the score 2-1.

 

Vermont 1, New Hampshire 0 -- Box Score

In a match between the top two America East teams heading into conference play, Vermont (6-2-3, 1-0-0 America East) protected its home field, topping New Hampshire (5-1-2, 0-1-0 America East), 1-0.

Junior forward Zach Paul scored for the Catamounts in the 41st minute, putting Vermont ahead, 1-0. The goal, Paul’s second of the season, was assisted by freshman midfielder Malick Camara and sophomore forward D. J. Elder. The Catamounts held that one-goal lead through the second half.

New Hampshire could not get its offense going. The Wildcats took only six shots total with one shot on goal. The loss is the first loss of the season for New Hampshire.

 

Hartford 1, Albany 0 -- Box Score

Hartford (3-5-0, 1-0-0 America East) used a last-second goal to escape its America East home opener with a win over Albany (4-6-0, 0-1-0 America East), 1-0.

The match looked destined for overtime until the Hawks scored the lone goal of the game in the 90th minute. Junior midfielder Patrick Boucher netted his second goal of the season with just 26 seconds remaining in regulation. Boucher was assisted by junior defender Jorge Rodriguez.

Albany junior keeper Adrian Foncette made five saves in the match. Hartford junior keeper Luke Citriniti made four saves in earning the shutout.

 

Binghamton 1, UMBC 1 (2 OT) – Box Score

UMBC (4-3-1, 0-0-1 America East) and Binghamton (2-4-3, 0-0-1 America East) played two overtimes as the teams battled to a 1-1 draw in the conference opener.

UMBC put a goal on the board first in the 75th minute when freshman forward Pete Caringi III headed in a ball assisted by senior forward Levi Houapeu and junior midfielder Andrew Bulls.

Binghamton did not stay down long. The Bearcats struck back in the 82nd minute when junior midfielder Ryan Walter found sophomore forward Jake Keegan for the equalizer, 1-1. That score held through the rest of regulation and two overtime periods.

While only two goals were scored, there was no shortage of offensive play. UMBC outshot Binghamton, 17-15. However, the Bearcats put 10 of their shots on target compared to seven shots on goal for the Retrievers.

UMBC junior keeper Dan Louisignau made nine saves. His counterpart, redshirt-freshman Chris Hayen, made six stops on the afternoon.
