CAMBRIDGE, Mass.
-- The
2010 America East Women's Soccer
Championship begins on Thursday with a pair of intriguing quarterfinal
contests. In the first matchup, No. 4 Albany hosts No. 5 New Hampshire
at 2 p.m., while No. 3 Hartford entertains No. 6 Maine at 6 p.m. The
winners will advance to Sunday's semifinals with the Albany-New
Hampshire winner facing top-seeded Boston University at 1 p.m. and the
Hartford-Maine winner taking on No. 2 Stony Brook at 2 p.m.
Stony
Brook, Hartford and Albany all clinched home games for the tournament
with wins in their regular-season finales on Sunday, while Maine earned
the final championship bid by virtue of Binghamton's loss to Stony
Brook.
Albany
(9-7-2 overall, 4-2-2 America East, 14 pts) is in search of its first America East Championship
victory, while New Hampshire (8-7-4, 4-2-2, 14) hopes to return to the title game for the
first time since 2007. The Great Danes won the
regular-season meeting, 2-1, on Oct. 7. Second-team all-conference
forward Shayla Bergeron scored her second goal of the day in the 88th
minute to seal the outcome.
Hartford
(7-8-3, 4-2-2, 14) downed the Wildcats, 1-0, on Sunday behind Caroline
Dixon's first goal of the season, which came in the 50th minute. With
the win, the Hawks earned the No. 3 seed, its hightest since 2007. Maine
(7-8-0, 3-5-0, 8) snuck into the tournament as the No. 6 seed, but have
beaten the Hawks this season. Maine earned a 1-0 victory in the team
teams' regular-season meeting on Oct. 7. Hannah Breton's score in the 25
minute was all the Meagan Price-Leibenzeder needed as she made four
saves to record the shutout.
