CAMBRIDGE, Mass.—Boston University divers sophomore Melinda Matyas (Budapest, Hungary/Eotvos Jozsef Gimnazium) and senior Tanner Knorr (San Diego, Calif./Valhalla), along with UMBC freshman swimmer Johan Rohtla (Tallinn, Estonia/Tallinn Secondary Science) and University of Vermont sophomore swimmer Kailey Gardner (Ithaca, N.Y./Ithaca) take home America East weekly honors for swimming and diving for the week ending October 24.
Matyas takes her second Female Diver of the Week honor of the 2010-11 season. The sophomore led a trio of Terrier women in sweeping the podium in both the one-meter and three-meter dives against Bryant and Maine. Matyas posted scores of 275.25 in the one-meter dive and 277.43 in the three-meter dive.
Knorr also wins his second Male Diver of the Week honor of the season. The senior won both the one-meter and three-meter dives in the Terriers’ tri-meet against Bryant and Maine. Knorr, along with teammate Jake Frankefield went one-two in both events. Knorr posted scores of 269.33 and 305.48, respectively, in his two events.
Rohtla was the only male Retriever to win both of his individual events against Navy Friday afternoon. While his team did not win the meet, the freshman took the 100-meter backstroke in 57.44 and the 200-meter backstroke in 2:04.31. Rohtla has not lost in either the 100- or 200- backstroke this season, whether it be in yards or meters. Rohtla is the third Retriever swimmer to win Male Swimmer of the Week this season.
Gardner takes her second Female Swimmer of the week honor of the season with her performance over the weekend. The sophomore helped the Catamounts top Siena, 169-129, on Saturday, winning a pair of events in record fashion as Vermont improves to 4-1. Gardner broke a pair of Siena pool records by winning both the 200 freestyle (1:54.80) and the 400 individual medley (4:32.27). Gardner was the America East Female Swimmer of the Week for the first week of the season as well.
Binghamton University swimming and diving did not compete last weekend. The Bearcats will return to competition when they host Massachusetts on Friday, November 5 and Saturday, November 6.
Boston University swimming and diving hosted a tri-meet against Bryant and America East foe Maine on Saturday. The men’s team won both of its meets, 155-127 over Bryant and 169-124 over Maine. The Terrier women also swept their meets, beating Bryant, 184-108, and Maine, 185-109. The men were led by a group of freshmen who came up strong in the pool. Andrew Guinther (Queensbury, N.Y./Queensbury) paced a one-two-three finish for the Terriers in the 50-yard breaststroke with a time of 27.38. Guinther also won the 200 breaststroke in 2:11.72. Classmates Pat O’Neal (Duxbury, Mass./Boston College High), Jeff Thomas and Nik Astashinsky (Carmel, Ind./Carmel) also touched first in their respective races. O’Neal won the 1,000 free in 9:59.96. Thomas finished first in the 200 free in a time of 1:45.95 and was also the second leg of the first-place 400 medley relay (3:35.02). Astashinsky took the top spot in the 50-yard backstroke, posting a time of 25.34. The Terriers also topped both the one- and three-meter dives, with senior Tanner Knorr and sophomore Jake Frankenfield (Minnetonka, Minn./Minnetonka) taking first and second in both events. The women were led by freshman Meaghan Grimes (Dracut, Mass./Dracut Senior), who won the 200- and 500-yard freestyle events, posting times of 1:54.53 and 5:03.04, respectively. Grimes also swam a leg on the second-place 400 medley relay team. That race was won by another group of Terriers in freshman Kendra Cheng (Franklin, Mass./Bishop Feehan), junior Amanda Schmitz (Pleasanton, Calif./Foothill), sophomore Lauren Drake (Wuerzburg, Germany/Heidelberg) and senior Sarah Doersam (San Antonio, Texas/Douglas MacArthur) in a time of 3:58.83. Schmitz also won the 200 fly, touching first in 2:04.04. Three other Terriers, senior Maria McIntyre (Herndon, Va./Chantilly), senior Kirsten Tullis (Glenn Mills, Pa./Archmere Academy) and junior Kristen Connors (Mansfield, Mass./Bishop Feehan) also won individual events, taking the 50-yard free (23.98), 100-yard free (53.55) and 200-yard breaststroke (2:24.61), respectively. Sophomore diver Melinda Matyas led a Terrier sweep of the podium in both the one-meter (275.25) and three-meter (277.43) dives. Next up for the Terriers is a dual meet against conference rival UMBC in Baltimore, Md., on Saturday, October 30.
The University of Maine men’s swimming and diving teams competed in a tri-meet at Boston University on Saturday against Bryant and host Boston University. In their first meet of the season, the Maine men defeated Bryant, 163-124.50, but lost to Boston University, 169-124. The women faced a similar fate, defeating the Bulldogs, 181-113, but falling short against the Terriers, 185-109. In the men’s meet, senior Jeremy Bender (St. Paul, Minn./Highland Park) grabbed a pair of wins for Maine as he won the 400 IM in 4:23.54 and the 200 fly in 1:59.48. The Black Bears took first, second and third in the 400 IM with Bender winning the event, followed by juniors Michael Capossela (Riverside, Conn./Greenwich) at 4:33.21 and Zachary Hamer (Andover, Mass./Andover) with a third place time of 4:33.44. Junior Andrew Mackeil (Biddeford, Maine/Biddeford) also picked up a win for Maine as he was first to touch the wall in the 50 fly at 24.19. Maine took second and third in the 200 freestyle relay as junior Roy Warren Jr. (North Palm Beach, Fla./Benjamin School), freshman Daniel Duvall (Durham, N.H./Oyster River High School), junior Andrew Meehan (Brewer, Maine/Brewer) and freshman James Forest (Columbia, Md./Atholton High School) took second in 1:30.42 while the team of senior Ryan Wonsor (Killington, Vt./Woodstock Union), senior Dan Macdonald (Melrose, Mass./Northeast Metro Vocational), freshman Joey Quinn (Bangor, Maine/Bangor) and junior Brian Landry (Yorktown, Va./Hampton Roads Academy) were third at 1:31.77. The women were led by senior Caitlin Shelley (Charlottesville, Va./Western Albemarie). Shelley set a school record for Maine in the 50 breaststroke as she took home first place in the event with a time of 31.16. The old school record was held by Lynn McPhail, who finished the event with a time of 31.86 in 1987. Shelley also finished second in the 200 breast at 2:28.38 and third in the 400 IM with a time of 4:48.04. Freshman Lauren Dwyer (Orono, Maine/Orono) placed first in the 50 fly for Maine at 27.98. Fellow freshman Shannon Bender (Cumberland, R.I./Lincoln) won the 400 IM for Maine with a time of 4:45.84. The Black Bears took first and second in the 200 freestyle relay. Sophomore Carmen Linden (Ottawa, Ontario/Sir Robert Borden), freshman Emily Puleio (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy), sophomore Desirae Deveaux (North Andover, Mass./North Andover) and Dwyer combined to win the relay with a time of 1:41.97 while senior Sara Knight (Gardiner, Maine/Gardiner), junior Helaina Sacco (Rochester, Mass./Old Rochester Regional), junior Grace Barnett (Bangor, Maine/Bangor) and senior Samantha Bond (Temple, N.H./Contoocook Valley) took second at 1:43.59. Maine returns to action this weekend when both teams travel to take on Bryant on Friday evening before facing URI on Saturday in Kingston, R.I.
UMBC men’s and women’s swimming and diving competed against Navy in a dual meet in Annapolis, Md., on Friday afternoon. The UMBC men fell to Navy, 158-131. The women also fell to Navy, 161-131. In the men’s meet, freshman Johan Rohtla earned two first-place finishes, sweeping the 100- and 200-meter backstroke events in 57.44 and 2:04.31. Senior Brad Reitz (Ellicott City, Md./Howard) won the men’s 100-meter butterfly in 55.68. For the women, sophomore Jennifer Kotonias (Burtonsville, Md./Academy of Holy Cross) won her two individual events, the women’s 200 butterfly in 2:17.33 and the 200 individual medley in a time of 2:21.82. Junior Abbey McKenney (Wilmington, Del./Brandywine) won the 100 freestyle in 59.19, while the 400 freestyle relay of junior Ashley Miller (New Smyrna Beach, Fla./New Smyrna Beach), freshman Erika Ronning (Western Springs, Ill./Lyons Township), junior Ashley Sippel (Rockville, Md./Thomas Wootton) and McKenney finished first in a time of 3:55.08. The Retrievers return to action Oct. 30 for a dual meet against America East rival Boston University at 1 p.m. The meet will be broadcast live on UMBCRetrievers.tv.
The University of New Hampshire women’s swimming and diving team dd not have a meet last weekend. The Wildcats will return to the pool on November 6 for a dual meet at Central Connecticut State.
Stony Brook University swimming and diving competed in a dual meet at St. Francis (N.Y.) with both the men’s and women’s teams grabbing victories. The men won by a score of 119-85 while the women posted a 154-50 victory. Five different men won events for the Seawolves. Junior Zachary Good (Columbus, Ind./Columbus North) swam a season-best 5:03.90 in the 500 free. Junior Daniel Kim (Douglaston, N.Y./Benjamin Cardozo) recorded a time of 10:29.49 in the 1000 free. In the 100 fly, freshman Derek Woodhead (Stony Brook, N.Y./Port Jefferson) swam a 54.35, a team-best this season. Junior Mark Anderson (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) completed the 100 breast in 1:02.40. In the women’s meet, the Seawolves were led by freshman Alison Zelnick (Troy, Ohio/Troy) who swam the 100 fly in 54.42. Sophomore Christie Bodden swam a season-best 1:00.17 in the 100 backstroke. Stony Brook swimming and diving will host its first home meet of the season against Massachusetts on Saturday, October 30.
The University of Vermont women’s swimming and diving team won its only meet of the week, topping Siena on the road, 169-129. Senior Kate Weaver (South Burlington, Vt./South Burlington), junior Katie Heenan (Clarendon Hills, Ill./Hinsdale Central) and sophomore Kailey Gardner each earned a pair of wins for the Catamounts, who improve to 4-1 on the year. Gardner broke a pair of Siena pool records by winning both the 200 freestyle (1:54.80) and the 400 IM (4:32.27). Junior Avery Pittman (Raleigh, N.C./Enloe) also broke a pool record on the afternoon by winning the 200 butterfly in a time of 2:09.66. Heenan helped the Catamounts take the top four spots in the 1,000 freestyle, as she won the event in 10:49.73 and also took the top spot in the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:11.95. Weaver earned victories in both the 100 backstroke (58.94) and the 100 freestyle (53.76) while freshman Emily Alexander (Stittsville, Ontario/Sacred Heart) took the 200 backstroke in 2:09.88. The Catamounts are now off until November 13 when they will travel to Keene State in a meet also featuring America East rival Maine, starting at 1 p.m.
