Hartford at UMBC, 1
p.m.- Live Stats
UMBC (7-4-2, 1-1-2 America East) plays host to Hartford
(5-7-0, 2-2-0 America East) in a key America East match up for both teams. With
this being Senior Day for the Retrievers, there should be a special atmosphere
surrounding the game. The Hawks will be hoping for a repeat of last season when
they pulled out a comfortable 3-0 home victory.
The Retrievers should have plenty of momentum following
their 2-1 (OT) victory at No. 23 Penn State. The win over the Nittany Lions was
the first-ever victory over a Big 10 program for UMBC. The Retrievers generated
some early momentum when junior forward Andrew Bulls opened the scoring in the
21st minute. The goal was only the second of the season for Bulls,
but he does lead America East with 10 assists this season. Despite allowing the
Nittany Lions to tie the game in the 74th minute, the Retrievers
still looked capable of striking at any time. They found the game-winner in the
99th minute, as sophomore midfielder Milo Kapor struck a beautiful
shot from 26 yards out to seal the victory.
The Hawks pulled out their own thrilling victory with a 2-1
(OT) win against Army. With the victory, Hartford has now won its last five
home games. Hartford grabbed the lead in the 25th minute when
freshman defender Tomas Boyle netted the first goal of his career. After Army
tied the game late in the first half, the score remained the same until early
in the overtime period. For the second consecutive game, it was sophomore
midfielder James Stamopoulos who provided the heroics, as he gave the Hawks the
win with his goal in the 93rd minute.
This game could have a huge impact on the America East
standings, as UMBC currently sits in 5th place, one point behind
Hartford. Following this game, UMBC hosts Vermont on October 27. Hartford
closes out the home portion of its schedule with a visit from Stony Brook on
the same day.
Vermont at Albany, 2
p.m.- Live Stats
Vermont (6-5-4, 1-2-1 America East) looks to pick up its
first win since the opening day of conference play when it heads on the road to
face Albany (4-8-1, 0-3-1 America East). In the meeting last season, these
teams played out a scoreless draw.
The Catamounts went their third straight game without a goal
in their 0-0 (2OT) draw with Stony Brook. Although they were unable to find the
back of the net, the Catamounts were the more aggressive team throughout the
game, outshooting Stony Brook, 18-11. Despite the lack of recent goals, junior
forward Nick O'Neill remains one of the top scorers in the conference with six
goals. Vermont currently holds a two point lead over UNH for the final spot in
the America East conference tournament.
The Great Danes put an end to their six-game losing streak
when they tied Binghamton, 1-1 (2OT). Albany grabbed the early lead with a goal
in the 6th minute from senior midfielder Sander Anker. However, the
Bearcats responded with a goal from sophomore forward Adam Whitehead, who
scored off a beautiful free kick in the 40th minute. With this being
the final home game of the season for the Great Danes, they will recognize nine
seniors prior to the game.
Vermont plays its final road game of the regular-season when
it travels to UMBC on October 27. Albany begins a two-game road trip with a
visit to New Hampshire on the same day.
Boston University at
New Hampshire, 2 p.m.- Live Stats
Boston University (9-3-1, 4-0-0 America East) looks to
remain undefeated in America East play when it travels to New Hampshire (5-3-5,
0-2-2 America East). In a thrilling match up last season, New Hampshire used a
late rally to earn a 2-1 upset over the Terriers at Nickerson Field.
The Terriers continued their dominant play with a 2-0 win
over UMBC in a game that was televised on Fox Soccer Channel. This was the
third consecutive 2-0 win for Boston University. After an evenly matched start
to the game, the Terriers grabbed the lead in the 35th minute.
Senior midfielder Ben Havey gave Boston U. the lead with his fourth goal of the
season. The Terriers sealed the win when Ryan Shea scored just three minutes
into the second half. With the victory, head coach Neil Roberts clinched the 25th
winning season of his 26 year career.
In a non-conference encounter, the Wildcats tied Holy Cross,
0-0. While the defense has been excellent for New Hampshire, the offense has
struggled since the start of America East play. The Wildcats have now gone six
straight games without scoring goal and have yet to score in conference play.
Senior goalkeeper Chris Devine made five saves to help secure the shutout.
Boston University returns home to host Binghamton on October
27 in the opening game of a two-game homestand to close out the regular-season.
UNH plays its final home game of the season on the same day when it hosts
Albany.
Stony Brook at
Binghamton- 7 p.m.- Live Stats ; Live Video
Binghamton (4-4-4, 2-0-2 America East) looks to remain
undefeated in America East play when it hosts Stony Brook (7-5-3, 1-1-2 America
East) in a game with conference tournament implications. In the match up last
season, the Seawolves picked up a 1-0 home victory.
The Bearcats maintained their hold on the No. 2 spot in the
conference standings with a 1-1 draw at Albany. Binghamton is now unbeaten in
its last eight games, with its only losses this season coming against ranked opponents.
The eight-game unbeaten streak is the longest for Binghamton since the 2008
campaign. In the draw against Albany, the Bearcats overcame an early deficit to
earn the tie. After senior midfielder Sander Anker gave the Great Danes the
lead in the 5th minute, the Bearcats responded with a free-kick goal
from sophomore forward Adam Whitehead with just five minutes remaining before
the end of the half.
Stony Brook brings a three-game unbeaten streak into the
game, but must be disappointed with the offensive struggles over the past two
games. The Seawolves are coming off scoreless draws against both UNH and
Vermont. While the lack of goals on the offensive end is surprising for Stony
Brook, it is the play of sophomore goalkeeper Stefan Manz that has been vital
to the success this season. In the tie against Vermont, Manz recorded a
career-high nine saves. He has now gone 331 minutes without allowing a goal.
Binghamton plays its final road game of the regular season
when it travels to Nickerson Field to face Boston University on October 27.
Stony Brook finishes off a three-game road trip with a visit to Hartford on the
same day.
