Binghamton at UMBC, 1 p.m. -- Live Stats
UMBC and Binghamton kick off their conference schedules with an exciting matchup in Baltimore, Md. In the regular season meeting last year, the Bearcats cruised to a 4-0 victory at the Bearcats Sports Complex. However, UMBC exacted revenge in the America East quarterfinals, as it pulled off the surprising upset with the 2-1 victory.
The Retrievers enter the game coming off a 2-1 loss to Fairleigh Dickinson. UMBC found itself in an early hole, as Samson Malijani scored the first of his two goals to give the Knights the lead. Malijani added his second tally in the 50th minute of action. Senior forward Levi Houapeu, who ranks among the nation’s leading scorers with 15 points and seven goals, narrowed the deficit with a goal from the penalty spot, but the Retrievers could not find the tying goal.
Binghamton enters the match up with a four-game unbeaten streak. The Bearcats rallied from an early two-goal deficit to secure a 4-2 win against Niagara. The victory marked the first time as a Division I program that Binghamton won a game after trailing by more than one goal. The Bearcats used goals from four different players to secure the comeback victory.
Following the game, UMBC begins a three-game road trip with a visit to Bucknell, while Binghamton opens a two-game homestand against Vermont.
New Hampshire at Vermont, 2 p.m. -- Live Video
New Hampshire and Vermont will open their conference schedules by meeting for the 49th time. The Catamounts hold a 32-14-4 edge in the series, but the Wildcats were victorious last year, 1-0.
Both teams enter this game following important victories. The Wildcats extended their unbeaten start to the season with a 1-0 win over Fairfield. Senior forward Dylan George scored the lone goal of the game in the sixth minute of action, helping continue the program’s best start to a season since 2008. Senior goalkeeper Colin O’Donnell continued his excellent play in the net, making five saves to secure the shutout. The reigning America East goalkeeper of the year, O’Donnell has allowed just two goals all season and ranks among the nation’s best with a 0.30 goals-against average.
The Catamounts put an end to a four-game winless streak with a 2-0 victory over Siena. Junior forward Nick O’Neill notched his team-high fifth goal of the season to give UVM the lead in the 27th minute. The Catamounts extended their lead right before the end of the first half when junior forward Zach Paul notched the first goal of his career.
The Wildcats step away from America East play with a trip to Michigan St. on October 6. Vermont also faces a non-conference foe when they welcome Dartmouth to Centennial Field on October 6.
Albany at Hartford, 7 p.m. -- Live Stats | Live Video
Albany and Hartford both enter their conference match up on three-game losing streaks. When these teams met in Albany last season, the Hawks pulled out the 1-0 road victory behind junior Patrick Boucher’s first-half goal.
The Great Danes are coming off a heartbreaking 4-3 loss to Holy Cross. Albany rallied to tie the match on three separate occasions, but ultimately fell when Jon Werth netted his second goal of the game early in the final overtime period. In the loss, the Great Danes played attacking soccer, outshooting the Crusaders, 23-17.
Hartford continued its struggles on the road, falling 1-0 to Hartwick. The Hawks have dropped all four road contests this season. Junior goalkeeper Jordan Bar continued to be excellent in the net for Hartford, as he made three saves to help keep the Hawks in the game.
Following this match up, Albany opens a four-game homestand with a visit from Stony Brook on October 9. The Hawks begin a two-game road trip with a visit to Boston University.
Boston University at Stony Brook, 7 p.m. -- Live Stats | Live Video
Both the Terriers and Seawolves, who were picked first and second, respectively, in the preseason coaches' poll, enter this game playing some of their best soccer of the year. Boston U. has won its past two games, while Stony Brook is unbeaten over its past six.
The Terriers picked up their first victory over a ranked opponent when they topped No. 20 Harvard, 2-0. Freshman defender Kelvin Madzongwe picked an opportune moment to score the first goal of his career, as he put Boston University into the lead in the 26th minute. The Terriers secured the victory early in the second half with junior forward Ben Berube scoring his third goal of the season.
Stony Brook is coming off a 1-0 victory over Iona. The Seawolves scored the lone goal of the game when sophomore forward Berian Gobeil found the back of the net in the 43rd minute. Sophomore goalkeeper Stefan Manz played an instrumental role in the victory, as he stopped an Iona penalty kick late in the second half.
Following the opening game of the conference schedule, Boston University steps away from America East play to face Providence on October 6, while Stony Brook travels to Albany for a conference match up on October 9.
