Week #5 Indoor Track and Field Awards Release
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. –University at Albany has swept the weekly Track and Field awards after recording top national performances at the Great Dane Classic this past weekend. Freshman Sean Halpin (Mount Vernon, N.Y./Iona Prep) and senior Luke Schoen (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) led the men to their third straight team title at the Classic and have garnered the male Track and Field Performer of the Week awards, respectively. Senior Fey Adaramola (Bronx, N.Y./Trevor/Central Florida) and junior Tiffany Sprenkels (Squamish, British Columbia/Howe Sound) led the women to fourth place after turning in top performances at the meet and have captured the female Track and Field Performer of the Week honors for the week ending January 24.
Halpin, who was named male Track Athlete of the Meet, won the mile in an IC4A-qualfiying time of 4:08.77. The mark set a meet record and ranks 30th in the country for the event. Nationally, it is the fifth-fastest time posted by a freshman this winter. Halpin tops the America East standings and also qualified for the USA Junior Nationals in the 1,500m with his time in the mile. He is the only freshman in the conference this season to have qualified for the IC4A championship in four separate events.
Schoen earns his second straight weekly honor after winning the pole vault for the second straight meet with the best mark this season. He won the pole vault with an NCAA provisional mark of 5.36m, which ties him at seventh in the nation. Schoen is the first America East athlete to post a NCAA provisional mark this winter.
Adaramola paced the Great Dane women with a win in the 55m dash. Her time of 6.96 qualified her for the ECAC championship in March and bested one of the longest-standing school records set by Ellakisha Williamson in 1998. Adaramola also tops the conference standings and is tied for third in the nation in the event. Matching the meet record in the 55m dash, Adaramola has earned her third straight weekly honor.
Sprenkels posted a personal best leap to finish second in the triple jump at the Great Dane Classic. Posting a mark of 12.17m, she qualified for the ECAC championship for the third straight season. Sprenkels ranks second in the performance list.
Albany – The Albany men won the team title at the Great Dane Classic for the third-straight year while the women placed fourth on Friday. Luke Schoen led the men, winning the pole vault with a mark of 5.36m. Schoen’s mark placed him in fifth nationally and provisionally qualified him for the NCAA indoor track and field championships. Sean Halpin also claimed a title for Albany, finishing first in the mile run with an IC4A-qualifying time of 4:08.77. Halpin set a meet record in the event and also posted the seventh best time in the country. His time in the mile also qualified him for the USA Junior National Championships in the 1,500m run. Freshman Alex Leuchanka (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa) also qualified for the USA Junior National Championships in the 5,000m run. Leuchanka placed second at the meet in 14:57.87, a second out of first. Senior Valete Graham (Bronx, N.Y./Mount St. Michael) captured a fourth win for the Great Danes, placing first in the men’s long jump with an IC4A-qualifying leap of 7.48m. Graham tops the performance list followed by junior Fred Casimo (Cohoes, N.Y./Shaker), who finished second at the meet with an IC4A-qualifying jump of 7.15m. On the women’s side, Fey Adaramola again turned in a top performance for Albany, winning the 55m dash in a meet-record and ECAC-qualifying time of 6.96 seconds. Adaramola’s time bested one of the program’s oldest school records, set in 1998 by Ellakisha Williamson. Her time is also third fastest in the nation this season and was only .04 off of the NCAA provisional qualifying standard. Senior Laura Cummings (Bay Shore, N.Y./Bay Shore/North Carolina) captured a second title for the women, finishing first in the 3,000m with a personal-best time of 10:00.97. Tiffany Sprenkels claimed a top finish for the women in the field events, recording a second-place finish in the triple jump. Sprenkels posted a personal-best and ECAC-qualifying jump of 12.17m. She moves to second in the conference standings. UAlbany will next send a few competitors to the 103rd Millrose Games on Friday, January 29 while the rest of the squad will compete at the New York Road Runners Saturday Night on January 30.
Binghamton – The Bearcat men’s squad finished fifth at the Great Dane Classic on Friday while the women finished 21st. The men’s distance medley relay team of junior Erik van Ingen (Marathon, N.Y./Marathon), sophomore Karl Schnabl (Warwick, N.Y./Warwick) and freshmen Aaron Ghobrial (Montgomery, N.Y./Pine Bush) and Brendan Connell (St. James, N.Y./Smithtown) claimed the only Bearcat title of the meet, racing to first in an IC4A-qualifying time of 10:09.14. The Bearcat relay team tops the conference standings by over 10 seconds. Sophomore Eric VanAernam (Gardiner, N.Y./Wallkill) captured another top finish for the men, claiming third in the pole vault with a mark of 4.65m. In the high jump, sophomore Nelson Hall (Scarsdale, N.Y./Scarsdale) posted another top-five finish, placing fifth with a leap of 1.96m. Hall is tied for fourth in the performance list. Junior Andrew Ugolino (West Hurley, N.Y./ Onteora ) and graduate student Chris Gaube (Vestal, N.Y./ Vestal) added to the men’s tally of top-five finishes, placing fourth and fifth, respectively, in the mile run. Ugolino and Gaube posted IC4A-qualifying times of 4:13.87 and 4:14.27, respectively. Junior Shannon Finnegan (Niskayuna, N.Y./Colonie) posted a top finish for the women, crossing the finish line in 10th in the one mile run with a time of 5:14.88. Freshman Lindsay Raulli (North Syracuse, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) also posted a top-10 finish, coming in seventh in the 3,000m run with a time of 10:17.25. Senior Kiki Gifft (Ithaca, N.Y./Lansing) claimed a top finish for the women in the field events, placing eighth in the pole vault with a mark of 3.30m. Gifft moves to second in the performance list. Binghamton returns to action at the Penn State National Open on Friday, January 29.
Boston U. – The Terriers had the weekend off, but both squads return to action at the Terrier Invitational January 29-30.
Hartford – The Hawks opened their 2010 season at the Wesleyan Invitational on Saturday where the squads captured eight top finishes and posted three school records. Sophomore Nicolle Adams (Schoharie, N.Y./Schoharie) led the women, earning a pair of wins in the field events. Adams won the long jump and the high jump with leaps of 5.08m and 1.51m, respectively. Freshman Brittney Lawson (Woonsocket, R.I./Woonsocket) also captured a title for the Hawks, placing first in the weight throw with a school record mark of 14.40m. Lawson is fifth in the conference standings. In her first meet for Hartford, freshman Diana Kornberg (Highland Mills, N.Y./Monroe Woodbury/Wheaton) also broke a school record, finishing second in the shot put with a throw 11.48m. Kornberg moves to fifth in the performance list. On the track, the women’s 4x400m relay team crossed the finish line in first in a time of 4:07.66. The men’s 4x400 relay team also finished first in 3:27.05. Sophomore Anderson Emerole (Jamaica, N.Y./Manhattan Center for Math and Sciences) and junior Warren Lane (Brooklyn, N.Y./Murry Bergtraum), members of the victorious 4x400m relay team, went 1-2 in the 400m run with Emerole placing first in 50.45 followed by Lane, who finished in 50.80. Graduate student Mike DuPaul (East Haven, Conn./East Haven/Connecticut) also posted a victory for the men, winning the 800m in a school-record time of 1:57.14. DuPaul is fifth in the conference standings. Sophomore Andrew Chalmers (Ashland, N.H./Plymouth Regional) claimed the final title for the men, finishing first in the 5,000m in 16:00.72. Hartford next competes at the Reebok-Boston Indoor Games on Friday, January 29.
Maine – After a tough meet against Dartmouth on January 16, the Black Bears took the weekend off, but return to action on January 29 at the Reebok-Boston Indoor Games.
UMBC – The Retrievers return to action at the George Mason Invitational on Saturday, January 30.
New Hampshire – The Wildcat squads both posted wins over Holy Cross on Saturday. Junior Megan Donohue (Stratham, N.H./Exeter) led the women, earning a first and second-place finish at the meet. Donohue crossed the finish line first in the 500m in 1:18.89. She placed second in the long jump with a leap of 5.33m behind classmate Camille Quarles (Derry, N.H./Pinkerton Academy), who won with a mark of 5.35m. In the triple jump, sophomore Eliza Mackintosh (Hanover, N.H./Hanover) and junior Jasmin Washington (Waltham, Mass./Waltham Senior) went 1-2 with leaps of 11.28m and 10.80m, respectively. Junior Kaitlyn Dugan (Hatfield, Pa./North Penn Senior) captured another title for New Hampshire, leaping to victory in the high jump with a mark of 1.56m. Senior Ashlee Lathrop (Sherburne, N.Y./Sherburne-Earlville) also captured a field event, claiming the weight throw with a mark of 17.35m. Lathrop takes over the top spot in the conference standings. On the track, junior Chelsey Canavan (Stoneham, Mass./Stoneham) won the 400m 1:00.70 while juniors Allison Letourneau (Kingston, Nova Scotia/Berkshire Prep) and Erica Jesseman (Scarborough, Maine/Scarborough) won the mile (5:06.56) and 3,000m (10:06.05), respectively. On the men’s side, junior Wesley Dinnan (Juneau, Alaska/Juneau-Douglas) and senior Anthony Vorachak (Lebanon, N.H.) each posted a pair of victories. Dinnan won the mile run in 4:23.74 and the 3,000m run in 8:47.15 while Vorachak won the long jump with a leap of 6.63m and the triple jump with a mark of 13.67m. Vorachak also claimed second place in the pole vault with a mark of 3.95m behind junior John Donaghy (Sutton, N.H./Sutton), who won with a mark of 4.25m. In the shot put, junior Brice Paey (Milton, N.H./St. Thomas) and graduate student Jeff Kaste (Atkinson, N.H./Timberlane) went 1-2 with throws of 17.29 and 10.04, respectively. Paey posted the best mark this season in the conference. New Hampshire returns to action on Friday, January 29 at the Boston Indoor Games.
Stony Brook – The Seawolves competed at the Princeton Invitational on Saturday led by sophomores Jillian Fauser (East Northport, N.Y./Northport) and Patricia Barry (Tipperary, Ireland/University of Limerick) on the women’s side and freshman Chris Pellicano (Englishtown, N.J./Manalapan) on the men’s. Fauser finished second in her section of the 500m with a time of 1:23.31, the top time posted by a Seawolf runner this season. Barry claimed third in the 3,000m with a time of 10:30.06. Junior Leanne Skrabzcz (West Seneca, NY/West Seneca East) also posted a top personal time of 5:26.91, improving her time in the mile by nine seconds. Pellicano led the men with a win in the 300m with a time of 38.73. Junior Brandon Leung (Rego Park, N.Y./Francis Lewis) placed fourth in the 800m in 1:59.53. Junior Sharnell Forbes (Springfield Gardens, N.Y./Valley Stream Central) and freshman Robert Vietri (Bay Shore, N.Y./Bay Shore) also claimed top-five finishes in the 800m with Forbes placing third in his section with a time of 2:02.75 and Vietri placing fifth in 2:03.13. Stony Brook returns to action on Friday, January 29 at the Terrier Invitational.
Vermont – The Catamount squads swept Middlebury in a meet on Friday. The men’s team captured nine titles led by seniors Justin Scricca (Wethersfield, Conn./Wethersfield) and Doug Maisey (Gwynedd Valley, Pa./Wissahickon), who each captured a pair of wins at the meet. Scricca claimed first in the 55m and the 300m with times of 6.61 and 36.29, respectively. Maisey posted two victories in the 1,000m in 2:33.48 and the mile in 4:25.73. Freshman Ryan Sleeper (West Windsor, N.J./West Windsor-Plainsboro) led a Catamount sweep of the 800m while sophomore John Little (New Ipswich, N.H./Mascenic Regional) placed first in the 3,000m with a time of 9:02.62. Senior David Hanss (Ann Arbor, Mich./Ann Arbor Pioneer) captured another track title for the men, winning the 55m hurdles in 7.80. Hanss moves to fourth in the conference standings. In the field events for the men, freshman Dan Ciabattoni (Reading, Pa./Holy Name) won the long jump with a leap of 6.59m. The women’s squad captured six titles against the Panthers led by junior Erica Cigolini (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood). Cigolini led a sweep of the 55m, placing first in 7.50. Freshman Julie McGilpin (Westfield, Mass./Westfield) also picked up a title, placing first in the 600m with a time of 1:37.2 while senior Jaqui Norton (Beverly, Mass./Beverly) captured first in the 3,000m in 10:48.32. In the field events, sophomore Ashley Brown (Benson, Vt./Fair Haven) placed first in the long jump with a mark of 5.01m while classmate Jocelyn Ferland (Charlestown, N.H./Falls Mountain Regional) won the weight throw with a toss of 10.91m. Vermont returns to action on January 29 at the Reebok Classic.
