BALTIMORE - The UMBC women's swimming and diving team heads to New Brunswick, N.J. Friday to take part in the prestigious Swimming World Magazine's College
Conference Carnival on Friday and Saturday at 6:30 p.m. The Retrievers
will take on three schools from top swimming conferences, including
Rutgers from the Big East, Minnesota from Big Ten and Richmond from the
Atlantic 10.
The
four teams will each select and enter a championship squad consisting
of 11 swimmers and two divers. Squads will compete in 12 swimming
events and two diving events in an "A- Finals Only" format. There will
be a swimmer representing each university in all of the final heats. In
addition, Rider and Central Connecticut athletes will compete against
the headliners in the B- Heats.
"We
are extremely honored to be a part of the College Conference Carnival
and competing against schools who are at the top of their conference,"
UMBC head coach Chad Cradock said. "We are looking forward to a great weekend of fast swimming and great diving."
All
proceeds from the Carnival will benefit the "Frank Elm Endowed
Scholarship" at Rutgers University. In 2009, the Carnival's charter
year, the event raised nearly $4,500 for the scholarship, and it is
expected that the funds raised will only become bigger and better in
2010. Elm was a USA Olympic coach in '68 and '76.
Swimming World TV will be broadcasting LIVE with Garrett Mcafferty and Josh Davis as announcers on www.swiminfo.com.
The Retrievers will then join up with the rest of their teammates and the men's team to take on Marist on Sunday at noon.
