Women's Basketball: Teams Kick Off 2010 With Conference Play

Every gameday throughout the 2009-10 season, America East will provide a women's basketball update that features notes on that day's matchups as well as recaps of the previous day's action. Saturday, January 2
Rhode Island at Albany     2 p.m.

  • The Great Danes defeated the Rams, 69-59, in Kingston last season and will try to move to 6-0 at home this season.
  • Rookie Julie Forster ranks fourth among the league's freshmen in scoring (9.1 ppg) and first in rebounding (7.0 rpg).


*Vermont at New Hampshire    2 p.m.

  • Vermont swept the season series last year 3-0, including an America East Championship quarterfinal meeting. The Wildcats and Catamounts have met in the quarterfinals in each of the past two seasons.
  • The Catamounts are first in the league in field-goal percentage with a mark of .419, while the Wildcats top the league in field-goal percentage defense at .339.


*Stony Brook at Hartford    4 p.m.

  • The Hawks lead America East in rebounding with 40 rebounds per game and have two of the top three rebounders in Diana Delva (8.8 rpg) and Erica Beverly (8.0 rpg).
  • Junior Kirsten Jeter has provided much of the offense and defense for the Seawolves this season, leading the team in scoring (13.5 ppg), steals (23), as well as minutes (29.7 minutes per game).

  • In front of her hometown crowd, senior Charity Iromuanya scored a team-high 10 points to go along with two blocks, two steals and two rebounds.
  • Sophomore Felicia Johnson registered seven points, three assists and two steals.


Vermont 58, Rhode Island 49 (Blue Sky Classic)   

  • The Catamounts captured the Blue Sky Classic title, while junior Tonya Young was named the Most Outstanding Player and senior May Kotsopoulos joined her on the all-tournament team.
  • Kotsopoulos scored a team-high 19 points and classmate Courtnay Pilypaitis recorded a double-double with 11 points, 10 boards, four assists and four steals.


Maine 87, Stephen F. Austin 84 (UTSA New Year's Classic)   

  • The Black Bears held a three-point half-time lead and hung onto that for their first victory away from Alfond Arena.
  • Five Black Bears scored in double-figures, led by sophomore Samantha Wheeler with 18 points, 13 rebounds and four steals. Senior Kristin Baker finished with 17 points and five helpers.


at #23 Syracuse 58, New Hampshire 48 
  

  • Sophomore forward Denise Beliveau netted a team-high 18 points on 6-for-15 field-goal shooting. She also finished with three assists and a steal.
  • Senior Candace Williams collected a team-high nine rebounds along with 12 points, one block and two steals. Junior Jill McDonald had a spectacular defensive night with a career-high seven blocks and three steals.


at Hartford 65, Bowling Green 60   

  • The Hawks more than doubled their first-half output (21) in the second stanza with 44 points on 52.2% field-goal shooting.
  • Senior Erica Beverly finished with 10 points, 10 rebounds and five blocks, while classmate Diana Delva recorded a team-high 15 points, seven rebounds and three blocks.
