Week #11 Swimming and Diving Awards Release

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Boston University has swept the Swimming and Diving awards for the third time this season with juniors Kyle Ernst (Seekonk, Mass./Seekonk) and Tanner Knorr (San Diego, Calif./Valhalla) garnering men’s Swimmer and Diver of the Week honors, respectively, after leading the Terriers over Brown. Boston U. sophomore Amanda Schmitz (Pleasanton, Calif./Foothill) and freshman Melinda Matyas (Budapest, Hungary/Eotvos Jozsef Gimnazium) garner the female Swimmer and Diver of the Week accolades, respectively, for the week ending January 18 after helping the women remain undefeated this season with wins this past weekend over Brown, New Hampshire and Northeastern.

Ernst has earned his second weekly honor of the year after posting two individual and one relay win on Saturday. He swam the second leg for the 200 medley relay team that won in 1:33.17. His individual titles came in the 100 and 200 breast with times of 57.29 and 2:06.74, respectively. Although both times are top marks in the conference this season, Ernst already holds the top spot in the America East standings for both events.  Against Brown, he also recorded a third place finish in the 200 IM in 1:57.73.

Knorr recorded a first-place finish on the three-meter boards on Saturday with a score of 317.55. He also placed second on the one-meter with a score of 278.03. This is Knorr’s second straight weekly honor and seventh overall for the season.

Schmitz led the Terriers in both dual meets over the weekend. Against Brown, Schmitz won the 200 fly in 2:04.46 and the 500 free in 5:04.14. She also placed third in the 200 IM with a time of 2:11.51. On Monday against conference foe New Hampshire and crosstown rival Northeastern, she again won the 200 fly in 2:05.78 and the 500 free in 5:00.64. Schmitz is top-five in the performance list for both events. She also added the 200 IM to her title tally, touching first in a time of 2:08.62. Her time in the 200 IM moves her to sixth in the conference standings.

Matyas continues her diving dominance, earning her eighth weekly diving award. Against Brown, Matyas won both the one and three-meter boards with scores of 258.45 and 207.95, respectively. On Monday, Matyas again won both the one and three-meter dives with scores of 270.10 and 296.50, respectively. Her score on the three-meter against New Hampshire and Northeastern is the highest score in the conference this season.

Binghamton – The Bearcat women’s squad captured a win against St. Bonaventure to begin its 2010 schedule while the men fell to the Bonnies. Freshman Tin Wai Siu (Hong Kong, China/S.T.F.A. Leung Kau Kui) led the women, claiming Binghamton’s first race of the meet in the 1,000 free. Siu set a freshman record in the 1,000 free, touching first in a time of 10:36.19. She also captured two other titles, winning the 200 fly in 2:07.75 and the 500 free in 5:11.99. Siu’s times in the 1,000 free and 200 fly move her into the top-10 in the conference standings for each event. Classmate Caitlin Nelson (Florham Park, N.J./Hanover Park) also captured a victory at the meet, winning the 50 free in 25.80 just ahead of teammates senior Allyce Brand (Highland Park, Ill./Highland Park) and freshman Olivia Baczek (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./F.D.Roosevelt), who tied for second in 25.87. Junior Amanda Ciccone (Suffern, N.Y./Suffern) picked up another two wins for the women, placing first in the 100 and 200 free with times of 53.01 and 1:54.65, respectively. On the boards, sophomore Morgan Neal (Rochester, N.Y./Pittsford Sutherland) finished first on the three-meter and second on the one-meter with scores of 184.88 and 188.03, respectively. For the men, freshman David Gleason (New York, N.Y./Robert Louis Stevenson) and sophomore Nolan Slesnick (Austin, T.X./LBJ-LASA) captured two wins apiece. Gleason won the 200 free in 1:42.38 and the 200 back in 1:54.79 while Slesnick won the 500 and 1,000 free in 4:50.88 and 9:52.86, respectively. Gleason’s time in the 200 free places him in the top-five in the conference standings. Junior Jason Chen (Livingston, N.J./Livingston) picked up a fifth title for the Bearcats, placing first in the 100 free with a time of 47.80. On Monday, both Binghamton squads fell to Buffalo. Siu and Ciccone again claimed titles for the women, touching first in the 100 free in 53.58 and 200 IM in 2:08.31, respectively. Ciccone set a new Bearcat record in the event and moves into the top-five in the performance list. Gleason was a top performer for the Binghamton men on Monday, claiming the 200 free title in 1:43.19 and placing second in the 100 free in 47.84. The Bearcats return to action on January 23 against Colgate.

Boston U. – Both Terrier squads defeated Brown on Saturday with the men capturing 11 events while the women won 14. Sophomore Kristen Connors (Mansfield, Mass./Bishop Feehan) led the women, claiming two individual wins and one relay victory. Connors first swam the second leg of the 200 medley relay, which won in 1:44.33. She then led a sweep of the 100 breast, winning her first individual title in a time of 1:04.40. Connors later won the 200 breast in 2:20.73. Amanda Schmitz also picked up two individual wins for Boston U., taking first in the 200 fly in 2:04.46 and the 500 free in 5:04.14. Melinda Matyas swept the board events, winning the one-meter and three-meter with scores of 258.45 and 307.95, respectively. Matyas betters her season-best score in the three-meter. On the men’s side, Kyle Ernst again was a top performer. Ernst touched first in two individual events and helped the 200 medley relay win in a time of 1:33.17. Ernst picked up his two individual titles in the 100 and 200 breast with times of 57.29 and 2:06.74, respectively. Junior Matt Rickett (Portland, Maine/Deering) and sophomore Jackson Hill (Naperville, Ill./Naperville North), also members of the 200 medley relay team, each added an individual win to the Terriers’ tally and helped Boston U. win the 400 free relay in 3:08.98. Rickett led a sweep of the 100 fly, winning in 50.77 while Hill placed first in the 100 free in 46.74. On the boards for the men, Tanner Knorr won the three-meter and placed second on the one-meter with scores of 317.55 and 278.03, respectively. On Monday, the Terrier women defeated Northeastern and New Hampshire to remain undefeated this season. Boston U. captured 13 of 16 events led by Schmitz and senior Emily Munday (Butte, Mont./Butte). Schmitz claimed three individual titles in the 200 fly (2:05.78), the 500 free (5:00.64) and the 200 IM (2:08.62). Schmitz moves to sixth in the conference standings in the 200 IM. Munday captured two titles at the meet, winning the 100 back in 57.17 and the 100 fly in 55.36. Matyas continued to dominate the diving events, capturing the one and three-meter boards with scores of 270.10 and 296.50, respectively. Boston U. returns to the pool at Holy Cross on January 19.

Maine – The Black Bear women defeated Syracuse and host Providence over the weekend while the men split, downing Syracuse but falling to Providence. Senior Meaghann Fisher (Carmel, Ind./Carmel) turned in a strong performance for the women, starting Maine off with a win in the 200 medley relay. Fisher swam the second leg of the 200 medley relay that won in a time of 2:09.65. She then captured an individual win in the 200 IM, touching first in 2:29.81. Fisher also claimed a second-place finish in the 200 free. On the men’s side, freshman Yuri Chornobil (Rochester, N.Y./Brighton) was again a top Maine swimmer, claiming two individual wins. Chornobil placed first in the 800 free in 8:58.64 and won the 400 free in 4:19.38. On Sunday, the Black Bears competed in a dual meet against Connecticut College and Southern Connecticut State. While the women fell to both schools, the men again split the meet, defeating SCSU, but falling to Connecticut College. Chornobil picked up the lone title for the Maine men, placing first in the 1,000 free in 10:15.61. Junior Jeremy Bender (St. Paul, Minn./Highland Park) also led the men, picking up three second-place finishes. Bender finished second in the 200 fly (2:03.85), the 200 IM (2:05.56) and the 1,000 free (10:17.99). For the women, Fisher again turned in a strong performance, capturing one win and two third-place finishes. She won the 100 fly in 59.58 while placing third in the 200 IM and the 200 fly with times of 2:15.53 and 2:11:30 respectively. The Black Bear women next host New Hampshire on January 22 while the men return to the pool against Bowdoin College on January 23.

UMBC – The Retriever women next compete at the prestigious College Swimming Carnival hosted by Rutgers January 22-23. Both squads then return to the pool on January 24 at Marist.

New Hampshire – The Wildcats defeated Northeastern but fell to conference foe Boston U. on Monday. Junior Allison Nahin (Hartland, Wisc./Arrowhead) led New Hampshire, breaking a pool record and capturing first in the 100 breast in 1:03.53. Nahin’s time tops the conference standings and was just short of a school record. Sophomore Jessica Little (Barrie, Ontario/Barrie Central Collegiate Institute), who placed third in the 100 breast in 1:06.51, also claimed a title in the 200 breast in 2:19.50. Little betters her season-best time in the 200 breast. Junior Amy Perrault (Kirkland Lake, Ontario/Ecole Catholique) added another title to the Wildcat tally and a pair of second-place finishes. Perrault won the 200 back with a time of 2:04.66, good enough for third in the performance list. Her second-place finishes came in the 100 back and 200 IM with times of 57.40 and 2:09.19, respectively. Perrault already tops the conference standings in the 100 back. Freshmen Mallory Morrell (Rush, N.Y./Rush-Henrietta Senior) and Shelli Reed (Hollister, Cali./San Benito) and junior Kiersten Wollenzien (Holland Landing, Ontario/Dr. John M. Denison) also claimed top-three finishes for New Hampshire. Morrell and Reed finished second and third, respectively, in the 100 free. Wollenzien claimed a second-place finish in the 1,000 free in 10:26.65. She moves to fifth in the conference standings. The Wildcats next compete on January 22 at Maine.

Stony Brook – On Saturday, the Seawolf women defeated Lafayette, while the men lost to the Leopards. Sophomore Darcy Heuser (Centerville, Ohio/Centerville) and junior Anastasiya Kiryushkina (Moscow, Russia/Korolev Secondary) led the women, claiming three individual wins apiece. Heuser won the 100 (54.18), 200 (1:56.62) and 500 free. Her time of 5:16.29 in the 500 free was a personal season-best. Kiryushkina captured her three titles in the 100 (1:09.94) and 200 breast (2:28.77) and the 400 IM (4:46.86). She won the 400 IM in a Stony Brook season-best time. Freshmen Julie Policht (Mississauga, Ontario/Michael Power) and Andjelija Sreckovic (Jagodina, Serbia/St. Joseph) also posted wins for the Stony Brook women. Policht led a sweep of the 200 fly, touching first in 2:14.62 while Sreckovic claimed the title in the 1650 free. On the men’s side, junior Lukasz Ochmanski (Lodz, Poland/Kosciuszko Memorial) and sophomore Sean Conway (Oakdale, N.Y./Connetquot) turned in strong swims, each claiming two individual victories and a relay win. Both swam a leg of the victorious 200 free relay. Ochmanski won his two individual titles in the 1650 free in 16:52.32 and the 400 IM in 4:19.56.  Conway took first in the 50 and 200 free while also capturing a second-place finish in the 100 free. Freshman Ivan Kopas (Kikinda, Serbia/Technical School Kikinda), also a member of the 200 free relay, posted another title for the Stony Brook men’s tally. He won the 100 back in 51.59. Kopas moves into the top-five in the conference standings. The Seawolves next compete in their final home meet of the season on Saturday January 23 against Bryant.

Vermont – The Catamounts fell to a Navy squad that broke nine Vermont pool records. Senior Molly MacMillian (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks West) captured the only Catamount win of the day, finishing first in the 500 free in a pool record time of 5:04.46. She also earned a second-place finish in the 1,000 free with a time of 10:20.73. Her time moves her to third in the conference standings. The Vermont squad claimed three other second-place finishes at the meet. Junior Kate Weaver (South Burlington, Vt.) finished second in the 200 free in 1:54.20 while freshmen Nicole Peruso (Branford, Conn./Branford) and Kailey Gardner (Ithaca, N.Y./Ithaca) placed second in the 200 fly in 2:12.95 and the 400 IM in 4:36.67, respectively. On the boards, freshman Melissa Wheeler (Roanoke, Va./William Byrd) took second in the three-meter dive with a score of 228.97. The Catamounts return to the pool on Saturday, January 23 against Northeastern.
