Zeglinski, Aronhalt Key Big Wins to Earn Weekly Accolades

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- University of Hartford's Joe Zeglinski (Philadephia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) and University at Albany's Logan Aronhalt (Zanesville, Ohio/Zanesville) played key roles in delivering important wins last week and have been named Player and Rookie of the Week, respectively, for their efforts. The awards for the week ending Jan. 17 were announced Monday afternoon.

Zeglinski, a junior guard, helped Hartford snap an 11-game losing streak and win back-to-back games last week to earn his second career Player of the Week honor. He scored 19 points and grabbed six rebounds in Thursday's win over UMBC. That victory was the Hawks' first since Nov. 21 and first road win since December of 2007. The preseason all-conference selection then went for 26 points, with 21 of those coming in the second half, to lead the Hawks to a comeback win over UNH Saturday.

The Player of the Week on Feb. 19, 2008, Zeglinski averaged 22.0 points, 6.0 rebounds and 2.0 assists for the week. He ranks fourth among league leaders with 16.2 points per game and ranks among the nation's best with 57 made 3-pointers.

Aronhalt had two of his best games as a collegian last week to earn his first career Rookie of the Week honor. Making his first two collegiate starts, he averaged 12.5 points and led the Great Danes to a win over UMBC by keying a second-half run. Trailing by four at the half, Albany went on 10-0 spurt to started the second half led by five points from Aronhalt. The redshirt freshman guard, who finished with a career-high 13 points in that game, almost sparked a comeback earlier in the week, scoring 10 of his 12 points in the second half as the Great Danes trimmed a 17-point deficit to two, but fell to UNH.

Aronhalt has played in 17 games this season and is averaging 9.0 over his last six outings.

CONFERENCE NOTEBOOK

STREAKING 'CATS
With Stony Brook dropping a pair of contests last week, Vermont is the league's lone unbeaten remaining. The Catamounts improved to 4-0 in the conference for the first time since 2006-07 with a 78-58 dismantling of Boston University on Sunday. The 'Cats, who held the high powered Terrier offense to just 14 first half points, have now won six straight and 11 of their last 12. Vermont has also won 10 straight America East contests and 17 of its last 20 dating back to last season.

BEWARE OF BLACK BEARS
Maine won its lone contest of the week, posting an impressive 67-61 win over Stony Brook at Alfond Arena Saturday. The Black Bears shot 52.8 percent for the game, an America East high is conference contests this season, the earn its second straight AE win. Maine, winners in seven of its last nine, has held opponents to 55.8 ppg in those seven wins. It's also the quickest Maine has reached the 10-win mark since the 2000-01 squad won 12 prior to Jan. 16.

HUGE HALVES HIGHLIGHT HONOR ROLL
In addition to Zeglinski and Barnies, several other America East players had huge halves last week that led to victories.
• University at Albany's Tim Ambrose (Brentwood, N.Y./Our Savior New America) had 17 of his 21 points in Saturday's win over UMBC.
• Greer Wright (Lake Worth, Fla./Boca Raton Prep/City College ) scored a career-high 27 points , including nine points in the final five minutes, and hit a game-winning Tuesday.
• Boston University's John Holland (Bronx, N.Y./St. Benedict's Prep) averaged 20.3 points in three games last week. He started his week with a double-double of 25 points and 10 rebounds against UMBC Tuesday, had 12 of his 15 in the second half in a win over Binghamton Thursday and scored 17 of his 22 in the final frame against Vermont Sunday.
• Maine's Troy Barnies (Auburn, Maine/Edward Little) tallied 12 of his 18 points in the second half, made 9-of-12 shots and grabbed nine boards in a 67-61 win over Stony Brook Saturday.
• UMBC's Adrian Satchell (Windsor, Conn./Windsor)  scored a career-best 16 points at Hartford Thursday and is shooting 55 percent for the season.
• Alvin Abreu (Lynn, Mass./Boys to Men Academy (Ill.) helped the Wildcats earned their first AE win with 13 points against Albany and nearly led UNH to a win at Hartford with 19 points and four 3-pointers.
• Stony Brook University's Bryan Dougher (Scotch Plains, N.J./Scotch Plains) had 21 points and canned seven 3-pointers in a loss at Binghamton Tuesday.
• University of Vermont's Garvey Young (Washington, D.C./Georgetown Prep) scored nine of his 14 points in the second half and added eight caroms in Sunday's win over Boston U.

THE WRIGHT STUFF
The moment of the week was provided by Binghamton's Greer Wright, who scored a career-high 27 points in a win over Stony Brook Tuesday with nine of those points came in the final five minutes. After Bryan Dougher tied the contest on a three with nine seconds left, Wright came down and pulled up at the elbow for a game-winning 15-footer with 1.8 seconds left. Wright finished with six rebounds and four assists in the 64-62 win.

ONE YEAR AGO ON MLK DAY
Boston University 99, Stony Brook 97 (4 OT)

In one of the most memorable games in America East lore, Boston University edged Stony Brook 99-97, in quadruple overtime on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day one year ago. The Terriers, who got 33 points from Corey Lowe, led throughout, growing their lead to as much as 11 in the second half, but the Seawolves fought back and sent the game to overtime on a 3-pointer by Muhammad El-Amin as time expired. Lowe, who had 21 in overtime alone, provided the most exciting moment of the extra fame. The all-conference guard slashed through the lane and flipped the ball up and in with 2 seconds left in the second session to extend the game, which his team eventually won. John Holland, the America East Player of the Week, played all 60 minutes and provided 29 points. Chris Martin led SBU with 26 points, 17 of them coming in overtime.

RISING UP THE RANKS
Four America East standouts continue to charge up the league's all-time scoring chart. Vermont's Boston University's Corey Lowe cracked the Top-25 all-time and on Sunday and has 1,626 career points. Vermont's Marqus Blakley sits right behind in 30th place with 1,583 points, while  Hartford's Joe Zeglinski is  49th with 1,375 points. The Terriers' John Holland rounds out the group with 1,230 points.

TEAM-BY-TEAM NOTES

Albany (6-13, AE 1-3) ended a three-game losing skid in a 76-69 victory over UMBC on Jan. 16 … the Great Danes came from 11 down in the opening period by shooting 50 percent or better from the field for the fourth time this season … UAlbany had shot less than 37 percent in its previous three contests … The Great Danes had dropped their opening three league games for the just the second time since joining America East in 2001-02 following a 67-59 loss at New Hampshire on Jan. 13 … Tim Ambrose (Brentwood, N.Y./Our Savior New American) tallied 17 of his 21 points in the second half vs. UMBC and reached the 20-point mark for the 14th time during his career … The 6-foot junior had handed our four-plus assists eight times this year and leads the team with a 3.11 average … Ambrose needs 73 points to become the 30th UAlbany player to hit the 1,000-career plateau … Logan Aronhalt (Zanesville, Ohio/Zanesville) tied a career-high with 13 points and was a key figure in a run of 10 unanswered to begin the second half … The redshirt freshman made his first collegiate start at New Hampshire and scored 10 of his 12 points after halftime … Aronhalt is averaging 9.0 over his last six appearances … freshman Blake Metcalf (Camby, Ind./Plainfield) pulled down a career-best 11 rebounds in his first start as a collegian vs. UMBC ... Mike Black (Chicago, Ill./Oak Park Fenwick) was one of three true freshmen in the starting lineup against UMBC … Black, who netted 12 points, is scoring at a 9.3 points over his last six games … Will Harris (Queens, N.Y./Brewster Academy) recorded his seventh career double-double with 20 points and 11 rebounds at New Hampshire … Harris scored 20-plus for the sixth time this season.

Binghamton
(7-12, AE 2-2) split two conference games, pinning a first AE loss on Stony Brook before coming up just short against preseason favorite Boston ... The Bearcats have won three of their last five games with the two defeats each going down to the wire … Junior forward Greer Wright (Lake Worth, Fla./Boca Raton Prep/City College of San Francisco) averaged 22.0 points in the two games. His 27-point effort against the Seawolves featured a tough 15-foot game-winner with 1.8 seconds remaining.  Wright has scored 20 or more points five times this season and leads the team in points, rebounds, assists and steals … Junior guard Chretien Lukusa (Toronto, Ontario/Eastern Commerce Collegiate) averaged 11.5 ppg. for the week and played an average of 38.5 minute s…  Junior forward Moussa Camara (Paris, France/The Rock School/Stoneridge) averaged 10.0 ppg. in the pair of games and absorbed a key charge with 18 seconds left that helped the Bearcats beat Stony Brook… Freshman point guard Dylan Talley (Burlington, N.J./Life Center Academy) has missed the last five games with a leg injury. He is averaging 10.4 ppg. – the highest scoring average of any freshman in the conference.

Boston University
(9-9, AE 4-2) extended its win streak to four games with victories over UMBC and Binghamton before falling to Vermont on Sunday … Junior John Holland (Bronx, N.Y./St. Benedict’s Prep (N.J.)) averaged 20.3 ppg in the three games to stay atop the conference lead for scoring at 19.2 ppg … He posted his second double-double of the season and seventh career against the Retrievers with 25 points and 10 rebounds, while senior Corey Lowe (Newton, Mass./Newton North) and Jake O’Brien (Weymouth, Mass./BC High) tallied 20 points each for the 75-63 victory … O’Brien came back on Thursday against the Bearcats with his fourth double-double of the season with 15 points, 10 rebounds, three steals and two blocks … The Terriers trailed, 30-26, at halftime at Binghamton before surging ahead in the second for a 63-55 win … Lowe recorded 22 points, six rebounds and six assists while recording his fourth consecutive of 20 or more points, his longest streak as a Terrier … The Terriers posted a season-low 14 points in the first half against Vermont with a 4-for-24 shooting performance … They hung tough in the game though and only trailed by 14 early in the second half but could not overcome the poor start, falling 78-58 … There won’t be much time to think about the loss, as they next host Albany on Tuesday at Agganis Arena with a 7 p.m. tip-off.

Hartford
(4-13, 2-2 AE) snapped an 11-game losing streak on Thursday when it traveled to UMBC and emerged victorious, 74-68 over the Retrievers … the win was the first in the last five trips to Catonsville for the Hawks, who lost the 2008 America East title game there … a balanced attack led the Hawks to victory on Thursday, as four players scored in double figures … junior Joe Zeglinski led all scorers with 18 points, adding six rebounds and two steals, which matched a season high … junior Joel Barkers added 16 points, seven rebounds and a career-high three assists in front of a large contingent of family and friends that made the trip from his native Washington, DC … junior Milton Burton started and played point guard for the first time in place of the injured Andres Torres, adding 13 points, five rebounds and a career-high six assists … Burton dished out nine helpers against just three turnovers in the week’s two games … Zeglinski set a season-high with 26 points on Saturday against New Hampshire, accounting for nearly half his team’s points as they pulled out a 56-53 victory … junior Morgan Sabia aided the cause with 11 rebounds, which matched a career-high … junior Kevin Estes scored a season-high 11 points and grabbed a career-best six rebounds off the bench against the Wildcats.

Maine
(10-6, AE 2-1)  won its fifth game in its last six, defeating Stony Brook 67-61 on Saturday…Maine was down by 14 in the second half, but staged a huge comeback, going on a 15-to-2 run in the second half to close the lead to 48-47…The Seawolves would take a 52-47 lead, but Maine came back and would take the lead on a Troy Barnies (Auburn, Maine/Edward Little) hook shots with just under six minutes remaining…Maine had a 62-61 lead and Sean McNally (Gardiner, Maine/Gardiner) would make a key three-pointer with 21 seconds left to seal the win…Barnies had a game-high 18 points on 9-of-12 shooting, grabbed nine rebounds and had two steals…Terrance Mitchell (Milton, Fla./Faulkner State Community College) added 10 points on 4-of-7 shooting while Gerald McLemore (San Diego, Calif./Worcester Academy) also added 10 points and had a key block down the stretch…Junior Bernal (Manhattan, N.Y./MCI) had seven points, seven rebounds and five assists…His second assist of the game made him the 10th player in program history to 300 career assists…Bernal is also 83 points away from 1,000, and would be just the sixth player in program history to 1,000 career points and 300 assists…Maine hosts New Hampshire on Monday at 7 p.m. before playing at Albany on Thursday and at Hartford on Saturday.

UMBC
(1-16, AE 0-4) outshot all three opponents from the floor this week and were 71-of-151 (47.0 percent) in the three games… However, the Retrievers were pounded on the glass, especially vs. Hartford and Albany, where the Hawks and Great Danes outscored UMBC, 29-8, in second chance points and won the games by six and seven points respectively… Sophomore post Jake Wasco (Philadelphia, Pa./Franklin Learning Center) got his second career start and first of the season at Boston, and smashed career highs with 12 points and 13 rebounds… UMBC outscored the Terriers, 36-18, in the paint, but the Terriers became the second straight team to hit for 10 or more (11) three-point field goals vs. the Retrievers… The Retrievers led at halftime vs. both Hartford and Albany, but those teams combined to hit 26 of 51 (51.0 percent) and 23 of 29 (79.3 percent) from the charity stripe in the final 20 minutes to earn the come-from-behind wins… UMBC hit 27 of 46 shots from the floor (58.7 percent) from the floor in the first halves of those two contests…Freshman wing Adrian Satchell (Windsor, Conn./Windsor) scored a season-high 16 points vs. the Hawks and hit his first career 3-pt. field goal (in his first attempt). The Retrievers led by as many as 11 points (36-25) late in the first half at Albany on Saturday, but scored just one field goal in the first 10:17 of the second half and a late rally fell short…The double-digit lead was UMBC’s first since the opening game of the season, when they led by as many as 18 points vs. Morgan State… Sophomore wing Chauncey Gilliam (Columbia, Md./Brewster Acad.) fell one point short of his career high with 21 points vs. the Great Danes… He is averaging 16.5 points per game in four career games vs. Albany… UMBC tied  a season-high with nine 3-point field goals (9./17) vs. Albany, led by Gilliam and freshman wing Brian Neller (Red Bank, N.J./Christian Brothers Acad.), who hit three apiece… No Retriever was credited with an offensive rebound in the game… The Retrievers complete a four-game in six-day stretch at Stony Brook on Monday… After a date with the Seawolves, seven of UMBC’s next nine games will occur at the RAC Arena.  

New Hampshire (6-9, AE 1-3) went 1-1 last week, picking up their first conference win of the year, 67-59, against Albany on Jan. 13, before suffering a crushing 56-53 defeat at Hartford on Jan. 16 … the Wildcats improved to 6-1 at home, matching their best start in Durham through seven games since the1997-98 season … UNH had five scorers with 10 or more points against the Great Danes, the first time they have accomplished that feat since Jan. 4, 2004 when Craig Walls (14), Marcus Bullock (12), Blagoj Janev (11), Griffin Walker (11) and Roland Williams (10) all scored in double digits at home against Northeastern … junior Alvin Abreu (Lynn, Mass./Boys to Men Academy) had 13 to lead the Wildcats, while classmate Dane DiLiegro (Lexington, Mass./Worcester Academy) also had 13 and added 13 boards for his second double-double in a three-game span – the first time in his career he has done that … sophomore Russell Graham (Norristown, Pa./Norristown) netted a career-high 11, while seniors Radar Onguetou (Yaounde, Cameron/New Hampton School) and Colbey Santos (Onset, Mass./Tabor Academy) both finished with 10 … Abreu led the ‘Cats against the Hawks with 19 points on 7 of 14 shooting, including 4 of 6 from behind the arc, while classmate James Valladares (Kaufman, Texas/Kaufman) matched his career high with 11 points on 4 of 7 shooting, including 2 of 3 from deep … the Wildcats return to action when they play the middle game of their three-game road stretch Monday, Jan. 18 at 7 p.m. against Maine at Alfond Arena.

Stony Brook (11-7, AE 3-2) lost both of its game this week, falling at Binghamton, 64-62, on Tuesday before losing to host Maine on Saturday, 67-61 … at 3-2, the Seawolves are still off to their best start in conference play since joining the America East in 2001-02 … sophomore Bryan Dougher scored 21 points at Binghamton on Tuesday, knocking down seven of his 12 three-point attempts … Dougher had a career-high six assists against Maine on Saturday … sophomore Dallis Joyner scored a career-high 17 points on Saturday at Maine … Joyner scored 13 of his 17 points in the first half … he also collected nine rebounds … Joyner has now scored in double-figures six times this season after scoring in double-figures five times all of last season … senior Muhammad El-Amin scored 16 points at Binghamton on Tuesday and then tallied 15 at Maine on Saturday … he knocked down a career-high five three-pointers against the Black Bears … El-Amin is averaging 18.8 points per game since the beginning of conference play … SBU lost to Maine after leading by 10 at halftime … Stony Brook is now 9-2 this season when leading at halftime … the Seawolves are 6-1 at home, matching their best start at home since 2000-01 … sophomore Tommy Brenton had eight points and 12 rebounds against Maine on Saturday … he has led the Seawolves in rebounding 14 times this season and has recorded double-digit rebounds an America East best nine times. 
 
Vermont (13-5, AE 4-0) won its only game of the week, defeating Boston U. 78-58 in a battle of the top two teams in the America East … Sophomore Garvey Young (Washington, D.C./Georgetown Prep) and senior Maurice Joseph (Montreal, Quebec/Champlain-St. Lambert/Michigan State) led the way with 14 points apiece and the two combined for 15 rebounds … Vermont held the Terriers to only 14 first half points and led by as many as 32 … The 14 first half points for BU were the fewest given up in a half by a Catamount squad since Vermont held Cornell to 14 in the first half of a 73-60 win on December 5, 2003 … Vermont has now won 11 of its last 12 games overall and sits alone in first place in the league standings as the only undefeated team remaining … The Catamounts stormed out of the gates in the first half, building a 24-3 advantage to open the contest … Vermont started the game connecting on 10 of its first 19, while holding the Terriers to make only one of their first 16 attempts … The Cats have now defeated Boston University seven times in their last eight tries … In the last two meetings at Patrick Gym Vermont has defeated the Terriers by an average of 24 points per game … The last time Vermont started 4-0 in conference play was during the 2006-07 season … The Cats continue a busy week with three games on tap. Vermont hosts Hartford (Tuesday, 7pm) and Stony Brook (Thursday, 7p.m.) then travels to face Binghamton on Sunday (2p.m.).
