PHILADELPHIA - One day after the Boston Univerisitys men's soccer squad sent Samuel Appiah to MLS, the women's squad saw two of its stars become professionals senior Casey Brown and Mara Osher each got drafted in the Women's Professional Soccer league. Mara Osher was the seventh pick in the sixth round for the Washington Freedom, while Casey Brown was the fifth pick of the seventh round for the Boston Breakers. The event was held as part of the NSCAA Coaches' Convention at the Pennsylvania Convention Center.
Osher, a senior back, earned second-team All-America East honors after leading the Terriers to their third straight conference title and fifth consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance in her first season as a defender. A first-team all-league choice at midfield as a junior, Osher played an important role for one the nation's toughest defenses, which registered 12 shutouts and compiled a 0.66 goals-against average.
Brown, a senior back, was an NSCAA third-team All-America selection and became the league's first women's soccer player to earn a positional Player of the Year award three times. Also a first-team all-conference choice for the third straight year, Brown was the 2007 Most Outstanding Player at the AE Championship, a two-time all-championship team member, as well as a second-team all-league and all-rookie honoree as a freshman.
Osher and Brown are the first two America East players drafted into WPS. University of Hartford's Sandra Kayulu was the last player selected by a team in the premier women's soccer league. Kayulu went in the fourth round of the 2003 WUSA Draft to Atlanta. Others have been Supplemental Draft choices.
