PHILADELPHIA - Boston University's Samuel Appiah, a first-team all-America East men's soccer selection in the fall, was chosen in the third round of the 2010 Major League Soccer
SuperDraft by the Houston Dynamo on Thursday. The event was held as
part of the NSCAA Coaches' Convention at the Pennsylvania Convention
Center.
The 46th
overall selection, Appiah finished 2009 ninth among league leaders with 13 points and fifth with five assists. In addition to receiving all-conference recognition, Appiah also earned All-Championship honors and was a third-team all-region choice. A midfielder, Appiah also was a second-team All-America East selection in 2008.
Appiah, a native of Ghana, joins a Dynamo squad that reached the Western Conference Championship after earning a league-high tying 13 wins during the regular season. Only in its fourth season in Houston, the franchise has won a pair of MLS Cups.
Appiah is the fourth America East player chosen in the 15 years MLS has
conducted a draft. Steward Ceus, the 2008 America East Goalkeeper of the Year was a third-round selection of the Colorado Rapids last season. Andrew Dorman, a 2004 Boston University graduate,
was picked by the New England Revolution that year, while University of
Hartford alum Rob Jachym was taken third overall by the Columbus Crew
in 1997. Several other standouts have been selected in the Supplemental
Draft.
