Women's Basketball: UMBC, Albany Match Up In Midday Matinee; Stony Brook and Vermont Host Evening Games

Wednesday, January 13
*UMBC at Albany    12 p.m.

  • UMBC sophomore Michelle Kurowski is second in the conference with 15.3 ppg, while senior Carlee Cassidy ranks first with 20 ppg in league contests.
  • Albany rookies Julie Forster (7.1 rpg) and Keyana Williams (4.9 rpg) are the only two freshmen among the league's top-20 rebounders.
  • The Retrievers and Great Danes each won their home games in last season's series. Albany scored a season-high 92 points at SEFCU Arena last year.


*Binghamton at Vermont    7 p.m.

  • The Bearcats (.352) and Catamounts (.350) are the hottest-shooting teams in the conference from beyond the arc. Five of America East's top seven players in three-pointers made hail from one of these two squads.
  • Vermont took both meetings last year, both by over 20 points. The Catamounts are outscoring league foes by 26 ppg so far this year.
  • Binghamton sophomore Andrea Holmes leads the league in minutes played (37.4 mpg) and is tied for second with an assist-turnover ratio of 1.3.


*Boston U. at Stony Brook    7 p.m.

  • The Terriers have three players in the league's top-10 scoring, the most of any other team. Sophomore Alex Young leads the charge with 14.6 ppg in fourth.
  • Stony Brook junior guard Misha Horsey is up to 12.7 ppg in three league contests so far. She is averaging 6.9 ppg overall.
  • Boston U., who has won four straight games over Stony Brook, is looking for its third consecutive win which would be the team's longest win streak of the season.

*Maine 65, at New Hampshire 61

  • Four Black Bears reached double-digits in points. Rookie Corinne Wellington scored a team-high 18 points, while senior Amanda Tewksbury netted 16 of her own.
  • Maine went to the line 26 times in the second half, draining 20 of the free throws, to finish 25-for-35 for the game (.714).
  • New Hampshire led by 12, 35-23, at the half. Senior Amy Simpson poured in a game and season-high 21 points, while sophomore Denise Beliveau put together a double-double of 13 points and 11 rebounds.


Sunday, January 10
*UMBC 61, at Maine 52   

  • UMBC Senior Carlee Cassidy registered her first career double-double with game highs of 19 points and 11 rebounds. She also put up three assists and a steal.
  • Sophomores Michelle Kurowski and Erin Brown finished with 17 and 15 points, respectively, to add to the offense.
  • Maine outrebounded their guests, 37-32, with every Black Bear to see time on the court grabbing at least one rebound. Sophomore Samantha Wheeler and senior Amanda Tewksbury led the way with seven each.
  • Black Bear senior Kristin Baker was the lone player in double-figures for the hosts. Baker drained 17 points to go along with four boards and three steals.


*at Vermont 92, Albany 47

  • The Catamounts scored the most points in a league game thus far, including 58 points in the first half, the most in a game between league foes since Maine dropped 60 on Drexel in a 1997 tournament game.
  • Vermont senior Courtnay Pilypaitis notched her third career triple-double with 12 points, 17 rebounds and 10 assists. She shot 4-for-5 from the field and 3-for-3 from long-distance. Junior Tonya Young added a double-double of 24 points and 10 rebounds.
  • The Great Danes were led by sophomore Cassandra Callaway who recorded 10 points and five rebounds in just 15 minutes of action from off the bench.
