CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - University of Maine's Laura Martel (Lewiston, Maine/Lewiston) and University at Albany's Breanna Maggio (Ontario, N.Y./Wayne Central) have garnered America East Player and Rookie of the Week honors, respectively, for the week ending Sept. 1.
Martel, a senior striker, accounted for all the Black Bears’ scoring with three goals in a pair of games last week. She found the back of the net in a 3-1 loss at Dartmouth on Friday and became the first America East player with a multi-goal game this season by scoring twice to lead her team to a 2-2 tie against Iona Sunday. A senior forward, Martel leads America East with three goals and six points thus far this season.
Maggio, a freshman goalkeeper, did all she could to keep the Great Danes close in a 1-0 loss to Lehigh Sunday. In her second career start, Maggio made 10 saves, many of them front point-blank range, before the Mountain Hawks broke a scoreless tie in the 89th minute on an uncontested breakaway. The Ontario, N.Y. native ranks among leaders with a 1.33 goals-against average and .846 save percentage through two weeks of play.

Albany (1-3, 0-0 America East) won its home opener over Iona by a 2-0 decision on Friday, Sept. 4 … The Great Danes ended the week with a heartbreaking 1-0 defeat to Lehigh two days later in which the lone goal was scored in the 89th minute for the second consecutive meeting between the teams … The Great Danes placed nine or 10 freshmen and sophomores on the field at the same time for the duration of both matches, which were each highlighted by the stellar play of the goalkeepers … Cate Crenson (North Salem, N.Y./North Salem) made eight saves in net to earn her first career shutout in the win over Iona … It was the first shutout by a Great Dane goalkeeper since Oct. 30, 2007 … Breanna Maggio (Ontario, N.Y./Wayne Central) went the distance for the first time of her career in the loss to Lehigh … Several of her 10 saves came from point-blank range before the winning goal was scored in the waning moments on a breakaway … Makenzie Baratta’s (Manalapan, N.J./Red Bank Catholic) first career goal was the game winner versus Iona … Ashley Tirabassi (Cambridge, Ontario/Monsignor Doyle) headed in the insurance tally … She now needs just three goals, three assists and three points to break the all-time school records in each category … UAlbany embarks on a three-game road trip this week against Atlantic 10 Conference opponents … The team visits Massachusetts on Sept. 9, La Salle on Sept. 11 and Temple on Sept. 13.
Binghamton (0-3-1, 0-0-0 America East) had a tie and a loss on the week… The Bearcats battled to a scoreless tie at Cornell Friday night before suffering a 1-0 defeat against Syracuse in the team’s home opener Sunday afternoon… Keepers Jen McEachron (Hoosick Falls, N.Y./Hoosick Falls) and Erin Iman (Bel Air, Md./Fallston) continued to split the duties in goal. The duo combined for five saves in the shutout against the Big Red. Freshman defender Alyssa Staubitz (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) was selected as the America East Player of the Game in the loss to Syracuse… Binghamton is starting seven underclassmen in the lineup… The team has allowed just two goals in its last three games but has yet to score in 2009.
Boston University (2-1-2, 0-0-0 America East) went 0-1-2 last week, which included a scoreless double overtime tie with No. 7 West Virginia. The Terriers opened the week with a 2-0 loss to cross-town rival No. 16 Boston College before settling for a 1-1 tie with Loyola on Friday night. Senior Farrell McClernon (West Chester, Pa./Merion Mercy) scored BU’s lone a goal of the week against Loyola; however, the Greyhounds tied the game up with a last-second goal in regulation off a corner kick. After 20 minutes of scoreless action, the two teams settled for a tie. Two days later, BU took on its highest-ranked opponent of the season when it faced off with No. 7 West Virginia. The Terriers’ defense shined in the contest as it withstood 23 shots from the Mountaineers – including 11 on frame. Senior Janie Reilly (Coral Springs, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas) started the first 45 minutes in net, collecting four saves, before sophomore Annie Tooley (Denver, Colo./Mullen) took over for the final 65 minutes, making six stops to complete the shutout. The Terriers will now turn their focus to the UConn Classic this upcoming weekend, where they will take on host-school UConn on Friday (Sept. 11) at 7:30 p.m., before facing off with No. 13 Penn State on Sunday (Sept. 13) at 11:30 a.m.
Hartford (2-2-0, 0-0-0 America East) finished the week with a 1-1record, defeating the Iona Gaels 4-1 in the home opener on Wednesday night before dropping a Sunday afternoon matinee 2-1 to the Bryan Bulldogs on the road … senior Beck Flowers (Santee, CA/Santana) scored what would prove to be the game-winning goal against Iona off a rebound in the 80th minute … senior Laura Guigli (North Stonington, CT/Wheeler) added two insurance goals with 44 seconds approximately four minutes later to guarantee the Hawks victory … sophomore Amber Smyth (North Tonawanda, NY/North Tonawanda) scored the Hawks first goal and the only goal in the first half off a feed from junior Mary Beth Hamilton (Columbia, CT/Mercy), the first of two assists for Hamilton … rookie Caitlin Alves (Ludlow, MA/The Williston Northampton School) scored the Hawks only goal against Bryant, her first collegiate goal in the 18th minute … sophomore keeper Lauren Brodeur (Wilbraham, MA/Wilbraham Munson Academy) played all 180 minutes in goal for the Hawks allowing three goals on the week and making 20 saves and posting a .870 save percentage … the Hawks will play their next three games at home, beginning with the Fairfield Stags for a mid-week matchup on Thursday at 6:00 p.m. … Hartford then welcomes Central Connecticut to West Hartford for a Sunday afternoon game (2:00 p.m.) to round out the week’s action.
Maine (1-2-1, 0-0-0 America East) fell to Dartmouth 3-1 on Friday afternoon, before finishing in a 2-2 tie with Iona in double overtime on Sunday afternoon… Maine outshot both of its opponents on the week… The Black Bears had an 11-9 edge in shots at Dartmouth and a 24-7 advantage in shots against Iona… Laura Martel (Lewiston, Maine/Lewiston) led Maine as she scored all three goals for the Black Bears… Scored her first goal of the season in Maine’s game at Dartmouth… Had both Maine goals Sunday against Iona… Martel leads the team in scoring with three goals for six points… Kelsey Wilson (Gorham, Maine) and Carolyne Nellis (Quebec City, Quebec) each have a goal and an assist on the season for the Black Bears… Véronique Fleury (Montreal, Quebec) leads Maine in assists with two on the season… Rookies are playing into the Black Bear lineup this season as Stephanie Frenette-Blais (Quebec City, Quebec) has started all for games for Maine, while Maddie Hill (Brampton, Ontario) has started three… Rookie keeper Meagan Price-Leibenzeder (Surrey, British Columbia) has started all four games as well for the Black Bears… Maine hits the road this weekend when it plays at Bryant on Sept. 11 and at Sacred Heart on Sept. 13.
UMBC (0-4-0, 0-0-0 America East) concluded its season-opening four-game road trip last week with a pair of heartbreakers, falling to Bucknell, 2-1, on Sept. 2, and to cross-town rival Towson, 1-0, on Sept. 6… Sophomore goalie Mo Van Vlerah (Ijamsville, Md./Northwest) was outstanding between the pipes, notching a season-high seven saves in each contest… She took shutouts deep into both matches before allowing late goals… The Retrievers took their first lead of the season against Bucknell when a Bison defender accidentally headed the ball into their own net off a corner kick for an own-goal in the 55th minute… UMBC held the 1-0 lead for more than 30 minutes before a pair of late Bison goals gave Bucknell the 2-1 victory… Later in the week, the Retrievers battled Towson to a scoreless draw for 87 minutes before the Tigers took the lead with three minutes remaining and held on for the 1-0 win… After taking just seven shots in the first two games of the season, UMBC combined for 17 against Bucknell and Towson… Freshman forward Rachel McKee (Ellicott City, Md./Mount Hebron) leads UMBC with six shots, including five on goal… The Retrievers now have nearly two weeks off before returning to action with their home opener, when they host regional rival George Washington on Sept. 18.
New Hampshire (1-2-0, 0-0-0 America East) went 0-2-0 last week, losing a pair of road games to St. John’s (N.Y.), 2-0, and to Siena, 3-2, in double overtime … senior Morgan Keefe (So. Burlington, Vt./South Burlington) registered her first points of 2009 when she scored a goal with one minute to play in regulation to force overtime against Siena and also added an assist on the first collegiate goal by freshman Allie Coppenrath (Green Harbor, Mass./Marshfield) in the 57th minute … Keefe, the America East Player of the Game, matched her career numbers of one goal and one assist for the three points with the outburst against Siena … sophomore Stephanie Gilkenson (Cranston, R.I./LaSalle Academy) picked up her first assist of the season on Keefe’s equalizer … senior goalkeeper Ally Yost (Langhorne, Pa./Neshaminy) made four saves … Yost stopped three shots against St. John’s … sophomore Kelly Mooney (Canton, Mass./Canton) played solid defensively to earn America East Player of the Game honors at St. John’s … the Wildcats return to action Tuesday, Sept. 8 at 3 p.m. when they take on Harvard at Ohiri Field.
Stony Brook (1-2-0, 0-0-0 America East) dropped a pair of game this week, falling to East Carolina, 3-1, on Friday afternoon before losing to North Carolina State, 4-0, on Sunday afternoon … sophomore Gabriella Petralia scored her first career goal against East Carolina, tying the game at 1-1 in the 38th minute … the goal came just 37 seconds after East Carolina had taken a 1-0 lead … freshman Sa’sha Kershaw assisted on the goal to record her first career point … the goal came after Kershaw stole the ball from an ECU defender and passed it to Petralia, who spun and ripped a shot from 25 yards out … the ball just got by the outstretched hand of East Carolina goalkeeper Jen Kurowicki before hitting the right post and going into the net … senior goalkeeper Marisa Viola made eight saves in net for the Seawolves against East Carolina … Kershaw made her first career start on Sunday against North Carolina State … the Seawolves will play home games against Quinnipiac and Providence this week after playing three straight games on the road … Thursday’s game against Quinnipiac will be the first meeting between the programs since the 2000 season … Quinnipiac defeated the Seawolves, 3-2, in overtime in that game … the game against Providence will be the Seawolves first home contest against a Big East team since hosting the Friars during the 2006 season … SBU played Providence to a scoreless tie in the 2006 game.
Vermont (0-2-1, 0-0-0 America East) went 0-2 on the week with a pair of 1-0 losses at Loyola Marymount and Cal State Northridge. UVM played its second straight double-overtime game against the LMU Lions, but a goal in the 105th minute lifted Loyola Marymount past the Catamounts. Cal State Northridge scored in the 28th minute against Vermont to pull out the victory. Senior goalkeeper Eliza Bradley (Charlotte, Vt./Champlain Valley Union) totaled 11 saves in the two games and begins the week three stops shy of passing former standout Brooke Fairbanks and moving into second place all-time among the career save leaders at UVM. Vermont returns to action this weekend with a pair of games in the Philadelphia area. UVM takes on Villanova on Friday (Sept. 11) at 4 p.m. and La Salle on Sunday (Sept. 13) at 1 p.m.
