CAMBRIDGE, Mass.-- This week's field hockey honorees lifted their respective teams to wins over the weekend, including an extra session thriller and a third straight shutout. Boston University's senior forward Nikki Lloyd (Kent, England/Bromley) received the Player of the Week award, while University at Albany's midfielder Tegan Brown (Victoria, Australia/Berwick) earned the nod as rookie of the week. Both awards recognized performances through September 6.
Lloyd nearly single-handedly lifted Boston University over #17 Massachusetts on Friday, giving the Terriers their first win of the season. The senior forward scored all three of the Terriers' goals, including the overtime winner in the 78th minute, to conclude a thrilling 3-2 victory. After the Terriers trailed 1-0 at the half, Lloyd scored back-to-back goals to give them the lead. After the Minutewomen tied the game late in regulation, Lloyd came through in overtime on a 2-on-1 with freshman Nicole van Oosterom to seal the win. Lloyd also recorded three shots against #9 Iowa on Sunday.
Brown scored her first collegiate points in the Great Danes' 2-0 win over Hofstra on Saturday. Brown tallied her first goal of the season, an unassisted mark, with a hard shot from the top of the circle in the 18th minute to give the Great Danes a 1-0 lead. Brown doubled the Great Dane lead early in the second half off a penalty corner. The freshman blasted the ball to the back of the cage to put UAlbany up by a 2-0 score.

Coughlin) were both credited with assists on the second goal… Junior goalkeeper Christine Hoffman (Mertztown, Pa./Brandywine Heights) made a career-high six saves in the first half of the game for the Great Danes… Hoffman and freshman Kristi Troch (Lehighton, Pa./Lehighton) continue to split time in the cage… Troch made three stops in the second half of play.
Boston University (1-3, 0-0 AE) competed at the UMass Invitational over the weekend, posting a thrilling 3-2 overtime victory over the 17th-ranked Minutewomen on Friday before dropping a 3-1 contest to No. 9 Iowa on Sunday… Senior Nikki Lloyd (Kent, England/Bromley) scored all three of the Terriers' goals against UMass and capped her hat-trick performance with the overtime winner in the 78th minute… Freshmen Jacinda McLeod (Whangarei, New Zealand/Whangarei Girls) and Nicole van Oosterom (Lower Hutt, New Zealand/Chilton Saint James School) each assisted on one of Lloyd's tallies to pick up their first collegiate points… Junior Allie Dolce (Jamestown, R.I./North Kingstown) scored the Terriers' lone goal against Iowa when she knocked in a rebound from a shot by McLeod… The Terriers allowed just two corners against the Hawkeyes… Through four games, Boston U. has earned 31 corners, while giving up only 20… Junior goalkeeper Amanda Smith (Avon, Conn./Avon) made four saves in each contest… The Terriers will return to action this weekend with a pair of games against cross-town rivals, hosting Boston College for their home opener on Saturday (Sept. 12 - 1 p.m.) before making the short trip to face Northeastern on Sunday (Sept. 13 - 2 p.m.)
The Stags (1-2, 0-0 AE) won a thriller against Ball State University, handing the Cardinals their first loss of the young season. Fairfield trailed by two goals with six minutes remaining in regulation, but tied the game with a pair of goals just one minute apart. The team won the game with 1:29 left in the second overtime… The Ball State win was Head Coach Jackie Kane’s 100th career victory… Anne Nieuwenhuis tallied the team’s third goal against Ball State, which started the team’s rally. Although a defender, Nieuwenhuis is the team’s leading scorer with three goals. She has scored a goal in each of the first three games. She is also tied for the team lead with two defensive saves… The Stags have a great combo in Netherlands natives Nieuwenhuis and Marit Westenberg. The two student-athletes have scored five of the team’s seven goals this year. Westenberg, an America East All-Rookie selection a year ago, scored both of her goals against Ball State last Friday… Goalkeeper Caitlin O’Donnell has kept busy in her first three games, securing 36 saves through the first three games. She tallied a high of 15 saves against fifth-ranked UConn before making 14 stops against Ball State last week.
Maine (2-1, 0-0 AE) defeated Dartmouth on Sunday afternoon, 9-4… Maine got off to a 2-0 start courtesy of goals from Courtney Veinotte (Canaan, Maine/Skowhegan) and Jocelyn Mitchell (Kanata, Ontario/Earl of March Secondary) only to see Dartmouth knot the game at two… Stephanie Gardiner (Vancouver, British Columbia/Crofton House School) then gave Maine the lead it would not relinquish when Mitchell made a beautiful pass up field to a sprinting Gardiner who buried it… Ellen Andrews (New Glasgow, Prince Edward Island/University of P.E.I.) would score the next two Black Bear goals, via two assists from Lelia Sacré (North Delta, British Columbia/Syracuse) and an assist from Kelly Newton (Vancouver, British Columbia/Crofton House School)… Maine took a 5-2 lead into halftime… In the second half, Dartmouth would score a quick goal to make it a two-goal game, but Máire Dineen (Toronto, Ontario/Michael Power-St. Joseph) would get the lead back to three off a rebound… Gardiner would score three minutes later at the 45-minute mark when she hit a beautiful shot to the upper left corner… Mitchell and Sacré would each score to put the game firmly out of reach… Maine notched 41 shots to Dartmouth’s 15… Brittany Fleck (Vancouver, British Columbia/Crofton House School) made eight saves for Maine… Eight players had at least two points for Maine… The nine goals are the second-most in program history, second only to the 10 goals scored in 1973 against Colby… Maine has now outshot its opponents 86-32 and has 36 corners to its opponents’ 18… Mitchell leads the team with nine points while Gardiner and Newton are second with six points each.
New Hampshire (1-2, 0-0 AE) split a pair of road games in Providence last week … The Wildcats recorded their first win of ’09 with a 6-1 victory at Brown on Sept. 4, then fell 4-3 to 20th-ranked Providence College … Senior forward Meg Shea (Melrose, Mass.) scored two goals in both games; she has scored a goal in all three games this season and leads the team in both goals (five) and points (10) … Sophomore forward Whitney Frates (Woodstock, Vt./Kimball Union Academy) recorded a personal best of two assists and tied her career high with four points against Brown … Sophomore goalkeeper Katherine Nagengast (Westborough, Mass./Westborough) recorded her first career victory with a two-save effort at Brown … She followed that with a career-high 10 saves against Providence … The six goals vs. the Bears marked the New Hampshire’s highest goal output since the 2006 regular-season finale at UMBC (9-1 win) … UNH recorded 33 shots against Brown to mark the Wildcats’ highest single-game shot total since Oct. 11, 2003 at Albany (37 shots); UNH had not tallied 30+ shots in a game since ’03 … New Hampshire’s 25 first-half shots was more than any game total last season … Through three games, the opposition has taken a 1-0 lead in every game … The Wildcats play two of their three neutral-site games this week at UVM’s Sheraton Catamount Classic with contests against UC Davis and Penn, two teams the ‘Cats have never faced.
Vermont (0-4, 0-0 AE) dropped a pair of contests last week, falling on the road to both Bucknell and Lock Haven … In their first road game of the season on Friday at Bucknell, the Catamounts took a 1-0 lead when senior Megan Maynard (Waterbury Center, Vt./Harwood) scored her first of the year … Sophomore Allison Barnaby (Hampton, N.H./Governor Dummer Academy) earned her first collegiate point with an assist on the goal … The Bison would score the final three goals of the contest though to pull out the win … Senior Kristen Heavens (Harwinton, Conn./Lewis Mills) made nine saves in the loss … On Sunday Lock Haven scored two first half goals on its way to a 3-0 victory … Heavens stopped eight shots in the loss … Vermont will return home this weekend when it plays host to the fourth-annual Sheraton Catamount Classic on September 12-13 … The Cats will play Penn in the opener on Saturday at 11 a.m., followed by New Hampshire and UC Davis at 2 p.m. On Sunday UVM faces UC Davis (12 p.m.) and Penn meets UNH (2:30 p.m.) … The Catamounts have won the classic in two of the first three years of play.
