Maine's Bartlett and Stony Brook's Van Dalen Earn Cross Country Weekly Honors

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - University of Maine senior Miles Bartlett (Casco, Maine/Lake Region) and Stony Brook University junior Holly Van Dalen (Wanganui, New Zealand/Wanganui Collegiate) each captured their first individual titles of the 2009 season this past weekend and as a result each garnered their first 2009 America East Performer of the Week honors for the week ending September 27. 

Leading the Black Bears to a two-point, 27-29, victory over the Wildcats on Friday, Bartlett won the dual meet on Maine's home course in a time of 25:42, outrunning the runner-up by 33 seconds. Bartlett opened his season with a 17th-place finish at the America East Pre-Championship race on September 13. Bartlett is a top runner for Maine, finishing 12th at the 2007 America East Championship and 25th at the 2008 championship. 

After placing second at the 2008 America East Championship and 12th at the NCAA Regional meet, Van Dalen has started her 2009 season off solidly by claiming the individual title in her first race of the season on Saturday. Van Dalen led Stony Brook as the women's squad cruised to a first-place finish out of 23 teams at the Codfish Bowl in Franklin Park. Van Dalen ran the course in 17:32.1 to capture first place by only two seconds. 

Four America East men's squads and four women's squads have claimed USTFCCCA Northeast regional rankings this week. The UNH men's team claimed the top ranking for the America East men placing 10th followed by Boston U. (12th), Binghamton (14th) and Vermont (15th).The Stony Brook women captured the top spot for the America East women coming in fourth in the rankings followed by Boston U. (9th), Maine (12th) and New Hampshire (13th). 

Albany - After two weeks off, the Great Danes will return to action this Saturday, October 3 at Bull Run Park in Centreville, Va. at 10 a.m. UAlbany will send its top seven male runners and top seven female runners to compete.

Binghamton - The Bearcats will return to action on Friday, October 2 for their second meet of the season at the Lehigh Paul Short Hill Run at 11 a.m.

Boston U. - After two weeks off, the Terriers will return to competition on Saturday, Oct. 10 at the New England Championship which will be held on Boston U.'s home course, Franklin Park, also the site of the NCAA Regional Championship in November. 

Hartford - The Hawks' men's and women's squads took this past weekend off to rest-up for the Keene State Invitational on Saturday, October 3 at 11 a.m.

Maine - In their home dual meet on Friday, September 25, the Black Bears' men's and women's squads both posted wins over the University of New Hampshire. The Maine women defeated the UNH squad 25-30 while the Maine men squeaked by with a 27-29 victory. The Black Bears also captured two individual titles on Friday with sophomore Corey Conner (Townsend, Mass./North Middlesex Regional) finishing first overall for the women with a time of 17:35 while senior Miles Bartlett claimed the men's title in 25:42. The women had four other runners finish in the top-10 including senior Jordan Daniel (Corinna, Maine/Mt. Blue), senior Vanessa Letourneau (Fairfield, Maine/Lawrence), junior Allison Conner (Townsend, Mass./North Middlesex Regional) and senior Brenna Walsh (Dartmouth, Nova Scotia/Dartmouth) who finished second, fifth, seventh and 10th, respectively. The men also had three other top-10 finishers including senior Corey Bean (Cornville, Maine/Skowhegan), sophomore Spencer McElwain (Caribou, Maine/Caribou) and junior Marc Halverson (Falmouth, Maine/Falmouth) who placed third, fifth and seventh, respectively. The Black Bears squads will next compete on October 3 at the Murray Keatinge Invitational. 

UMBC - After three-straight races, the Retrievers took the weekend off and will return to action on Friday, October 2 at the Paul Short Invitational in Bethlehem, Pa. 

New Hampshire - The UNH men's and women's squads fell in a close dual meet to Maine. The men's squad lost by two points, but claimed five top-10 spots. The freshmen led the Wildcats men with Patrick Taft (Hanson, Mass./Whitmen-Hanson) finishing second overall and Cory Sinotte (Hooksett, N.H./Manchester Central) claiming fourth place. Sophomore Alex Beaulieu (Merrimack, N.H.), junior Michael Peabody (Londonderry, N.H./Londonderry) and freshman Michael Ryan (Dallas, Pa./Lake Lehman) rounded out the UNH men's scorers by finishing sixth, eighth and ninth, respectively. The Wildcat women were edged by Maine, 25-30, on Friday. Junior Allison Letourneau (Kingston, Nova Scotia/Berkshire Prep School) finished first for the UNH women claiming a third-place finish. Sophomore Elizabeth Campbell (Colonia, N.J./Mt. St. Mary's) and junior Erica Jesseman (Scarborough, Maine/Scarborough) captured two other top-10 finishes for the Wildcats, placing fourth and sixth, respectively. The Wildcats squads will next compete at the Lehigh Paul Short Invitational on October 2.

Stony Brook - At the Codfish Bowl, on the Franklin Park course, the Stony Brook women claimed a first-place team victory out of 23 teams. Juniors Holly Van Dalen and Lucy Van Dalen (Wanganui, New Zealand/Wanganui Collegiate) led the Seawolves women on Saturday finishing first and second, respectively. Holly Van Dalen claimed first with a time of 17:32.1 only two seconds ahead of Lucy. Senior Laura Huet (Carrickmines, Ireland/Loreto College Foxrock), who took the individual title at Stony Brook's season-opening home invitational, captured fourth place, while junior Lisa Voltaire (Stockholm, Sweden/Lopargymnasiet) claimed eighth. Both the men's and women's squads will have the weekend off before returning to action at the Metropolitan Championships at Van Cortland Park in Bronx, N.Y. on Friday, October 9. 

Vermont - On Friday October 2, the Catamounts will return to action at the Lehigh Paul Short Invitational at 11 a.m.
