CAMBRIDGE, Mass.-- A pair of underclassmen are the recipients of the America East field hockey weekly awards for the week ending September 20. Maine sophomore forward Kelly Newton's (Vancouver, British Columbia/Crofton House School) offensive output earned her the Player of the Week award, while a collegiate first was recognized as Albany freshman midfielder Tegan Brown (Victoria, Australia/Berwick) garnered Rookie of the Week status.
Newton recorded a 14-point week and led the Black Bears to a 3-0 record, moving Maine to 7-1 on the season. In a neutral-site game against Pacific, Newton played a hand in six of Maine's seven goals. She hit the back of the cage four times, while assisting on two other goals. Newton's 10-point performance tied a school single-game record. On Sunday, she recorded a goal and two assists as Maine defeated Rutgers, 4-2. Newton, last year's America East Rookie of the Year, leads the league with 26 points and 3.25 points per game on the season.
Brown recorded her first career hat trick in a 6-0 win over St. Francis (Pa.) on Friday evening. She scored her first goal of the game, which proved to be the gamewinner, just three minutes into the contest on a penalty corner. Brown scored twice more on penalty corners, one in each half. She combined for nine shots on goal on the weekend, including four against St. Francis and five against Temple on Sunday, a 1-0 victory for the Great Danes.

UAlbany (5-2 overall record, 0-0 America East record) bounced back from two losses to go undefeated last week in non-conference play… The Great Danes hosted their fifth home game of the season, welcoming St. Francis (Pa.) to Alumni Turf Field on Friday evening, and sending the Red Flash home with a 6-0 loss… Freshman midfielder Tegan Brown (Victoria, Australia/Berwick) recorded her first career hat trick, including the gamewinner, in the game… She scored all three of her goals on penalty corners… Senior defender Jess Lindsey (Norristown, Pa./Methacton) scored one goal in the game and assisted on all three of Brown’s goals… Sophomore forward Christina Patrick (Reading, Pa./Reading Catholic) scored the Great Danes’ lone goal in a 1-0 win on the road at Temple… Freshman forward Inge Baijens (Rotterdam, Holland/Gemini College) and sophomore forward Megan Springmeyer (Washington, N.J./Warren Hills) also scored goals for the Great Danes in the win over St. Francis… Goalkeepers Christine Hoffman (Mertztown, Pa./Brandywine Heights) and Kristi Troch (Lehighton, Pa./Lehighton) continue to split time in the cage for UAlbany… The two combined for three saves over the weekend… In the two contests, UAlbany outshot its opponents, 35-8, and held a 28-2 advantage in penalty corners.
Boston University (3-5, 0-0 AE) earned a pair of shutout victories over the weekend, posting a convincing 7-0 win at home over Sacred Heart on Saturday before earning a 1-0 road triumph at Dartmouth on Sunday… Six different players scored goals for the Terriers over the two games… Freshmen Jacinda McLeod (Whangarei, New Zealand/Whangarei Girls) and Nicole van Oosterom (Lower Hutt, New Zealand/Chilton Saint James School) each scored two goals, including their first collegiate goals, in the win over the Pioneers… McLeod added an assist to tie junior Allie Dolce (1g, 3a) for the game high in points with five… Senior co-captain Haley Robinson (Houston, Texas/The Kinkaid School) posted a goal and two assists for a career-best four points and fellow senior co-captain Nikki Lloyd (Kent, England/Bromley) tallied her team-leading fifth goal of the season… Boston U.'s defense did not allow a shot or give up a corner against SHU… On Sunday, sophomore Giovanna Monaco (North Caldwell, N.J./West Essex) broke a scoreless tie in the 61st minute with her second goal of the season to lead the Terriers to the 1-0 win… Junior Amanda Smith (Avon, Conn./Avon) saved both shots she faced against the Big Green to earn her first shutout of the season… Smith and redshirt freshman Julie Collins (Toledo, Ohio/Ottawa Hills) combined for the shutout on Saturday… The Terriers will travel south for two games next weekend, taking on No. 5 Virginia on Friday (Sept. 25) before visiting No. 15 Old Dominion on Sunday (Sept. 27).
The Stags (3-4, 0-0 AE) split a pair of home games last week, which gave the team a 3-3 record on its six-game home stand… Fairfield will play seven of its final 10 games on the road, beginning with a pair of contests against Columbia (September 23) and Holy Cross (September 26) this week… Fairfield played its second nationally-ranked team this season when it hosted #12 Drexel last Saturday. Goalkeeper Caitlin O’Donnell faced 25 shots and made 14 saves in the 5-1 setback. She is averaging nine saves per game through the first seven contests… Fairfield surrendered 13 goals against its two nationally-ranked opponents, more than half of its 24 goals allowed this year. Against non-ranked opponents, the Stags have yielded 11 goals in five games… Marit Westenberg regained the team lead in scoring with her goal against Bryant last week, giving the sophomore four goals for a team-high eight points. Defenders Anne Nieuwenhuis (three goals, one assist) and Melanie Leo (two goals, three assists) are tied for second among their teammates with seven points.
Maine (7-1, 0-0 AE) picked up three key wins on the weekend, all on the road. In a 6-0 win over Sacred Heart the Black Bears were led by Jocelyn Mitchell (Kanata, Ontario/Earl of March Secondary) who had two goals and one assist. The Black Bears got goals from five different players, including Courtney Glynn (Hampton, N.H./Winnacunnet) who recorded her first collegiate goal. Brittany Fleck (Vancouver, British Columbia/Crofton House School) and Courtney Gingrich (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) split time in the cage for Maine, each making two saves. On Friday, the Black Bears played Pacific at Rutgers. Maine was led by Kelly Newton (Vancouver, British Columbia/Crofton House School) who had a career day, notching four goals and two assists. Her ten-point day tied a Maine school record. Maine had four players score in the contest. Mallory Anderson (Hampton Falls, N.H./Winnacunnet) assisted on two of the Black Bear goals. The Black Bears played Rutgers on Sunday and won by a score of 4-2. Maine was led by Mitchell who had two goals and leads the team in that category with 11 total. Maine’s fourth goal was scored when Mitchell beat the goalie on a breakaway after she received a pass from Stephanie Gardiner (Vancouver, British Columbia/Crofton House School). With the assist, Gardiner now leads the team in that category with seven on the year. The Black Bears are led in points by Newton (10G, 6A) with 26 and Mitchell (11G, 2A) with 24. Fleck is 7-1 in the cage for the Black Bears. She has a 1.55 GAA with 33 saves on the season.
New Hampshire (4-2, 0-0 AE) extended its winning streak to three games with a 5-2 victory against Holy Cross at Memorial Field on Sept. 19 … The three-game winning streak matches the team’s longest of the 2008 season … After falling behind 1-0 in the fifth minute, UNH generated an 8-0 shot advantage the remainder of the first half and took a 2-1 lead into halftime … Four Wildcats factored in multiple goals vs. the Crusaders with Leah Boody (Amesbury, Mass./Amesbury) recording career highs in both goals (two) and points (four) … Kate Collins Smyth (Parteen, County Claire, Ireland/Crescent Comprehensive), Whitney Frates (Woodstock, Vt./Kimball Union) and Meg Shea (Melrose, Mass./Melrose) each tallied a goal and an assist … Shea extended her goal-scoring streak to six games with a second-half goal … Shea, Frates and Collins Smyth have factored in four of the team’s last eight goals … Frates, who ranked second on the team in assists last season, has a team-high five assists … In six games, UNH has outshot the opposition 75-37 in the first half, but the goals are even at 10; in comparison, the Wildcats have a 45-31 second-half shot advantage with a 11-4 scoring edge … UNH has fallen behind 1-0 in five of six games; the ‘Cats struck first in a 2-0 win vs. UC Davis … New Hampshire returns to the road this week for games against Davidson and Duke.
Vermont (1-7, 0-0 America East) went 0-2 on the week, dropping a pair of games in Columbus, Ohio … The Catamounts fell to #20 Ohio State on Friday, as senior Kristen Heavens (Harwinton, Conn./Lewis Mills) stopped a career-high 14 shots in the contest … The mark topped her previous career high of 13 which she recorded in the America East Semifinals against Boston University during her freshman season … On Saturday Central Michigan scored with only 14 seconds remaining to defeat Vermont 3-2 … The two goals marked the second-highest scoring total for the Cats this year … Senior Megan Maynard (Waterbury Center, Vt./Harwood) picked up her team-best fourth goal of the season in the first half, with an assist going to classmate Katie Smith (Newburyport, Mass./Newburyport) … The assist marked the first collegiate point for Smith … Senior Chelsea Stevenson (Crosswicks, N.J./Northern Burlington Regional) tallied the Cats second goal, her second of the year … Vermont only has one game on tap this week, as it will host Massachusetts on Saturday at 2 p.m.
