CAMBRIDGE, Mass.- Boston University's second win
over a nationally-ranked opponent, St. John's, which was ranked #1 by College
Soccer News last week, marked the program's first win over a top-ranked team
since 1994, and keeps the Terriers solidly in the national rankings.
The
Terriers (3-1-1, 0-0-0 America East) remain at #14 in the NSCAA/adidas national
rankings after posting a 1-0 win over then #4 St. John's on Sunday. Boston U.
is also fourth in the NSCAA/adidas Northeast coaches' poll and 19th
in the College Soccer News poll this week. The Terriers next take on crosstown-rival
Boston College in a game to be aired on the Fox Soccer channel Friday. UMBC (5-0-0,
0-0-0) rose in this week's regional rankings and is now tied for fifth with St.
John's. UMBC also received votes for the College Soccer News top-30 poll. The
Retrievers extended their winning streak to five last weekend after defeating
Mount St. Mary's, 2-1, and St. Francis (Pa.), 3-1, in the UMBC adidas Kick-Off
Classic. The 5-0-0 start is the Retrievers' best since 1999.
The
America East's men's and women's cross country teams had a strong showing in
the first U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association
(USTFCCCA) Northeast preseason regional rankings which were released Monday. The
men have three squads in the regional rankings, including New Hampshire (11th),
Stony Brook (13th), and Binghamton (14th). The UNH men
earned the highest ranking of the America East men's squads after winning the
America East Pre-Championship race this past weekend. On the women's side four teams earned spots
in the USTFCCCA Northeast poll, including Stony Brook (4th), Boston
U. (9th), New Hampshire (10th), and Vermont (15th).
The Stony Brook women earned the number four ranking after winning its
season-opening home invitational on Saturday. The Seawolves' senior Laura Huet (Wellington,
New Zealand/Loreto College Foxrock) also claimed the individual title.
Three
America East field hockey teams received votes in the NFHCA national poll.
Boston U. (59 votes) and University at Albany (58) each garnered more votes
this week and continue to lead America East in the national poll. Both teams
had tough weekends with UAlbany losing its first two games of the season to
nationally-ranked opponents while Boston U. dropped two hard-fought 4-3
contests to crosstown-rivals Boston College and Northeastern. University of
Maine (15) also rose in the national poll after beating Yale, 3-2, and Colgate,
7-1, to win the Black Bear Invitational on Sunday.
