QUEENS, N.Y. - Stony Brook freshman Leonardo Fernandes (North Babylon, N.Y.) scored his first collegiate goal but No. 4/3 St. John's tied the game in the second half as the Seawolves and Red Storm played to an exciting 1-1 double overtime tie at Belson Stadium on Friday night. Stony Brook is 1-2-1 on the season while St. John's is 1-0-2.

Freshman Cristian Quevedo (Smithtown, N.Y.) had the first quality scoring attempt for either team, dribbling the ball around two defenders before his shot from about 30 yards out was easily handled.

On the Seawolves ensuing possession, Stony Brook took a 1-0 lead for the third straight game. In the 18th minute, a shot that St. John's keeper Derby Carrillo was unable to corral was charged at by Fernandes, who was taken out by Carrillo and awarded a penalty kick. While Carrillo dived to his right, Fernandes put it to his left and into the back of the net for a 1-0 lead.

Freshman keeper Stefan Manz (Bronx, N.Y.) would immediately keep St. John's off the board as he made a diving save to his right on a shot from Tadeu Terra just two minutes later. Terra again almost put the Red Storm on the board but his shot was deflected over the goal line by senior Damion Brown (Kingston, Jamaica). In the 31st minute St. John's kept the pressure on and again Manz was sparkling, saving a shot from Adam Himeno over the crossbar.

Nearly capitalizing on a mistake, Stony Brook narrowly missed scoring its second goal of the game. Freshman Antonio Crespi (North Babylon, N.Y.) stole the ball and booted it over the keeper who could only watch but the attempt went just left of the goal just prior to halftime.

St. John's started the second half nearly scoring just minutes in. After a free kick from 37 yards out, Kyle Hoffer's header bounced off the ground and over the crossbar.

The Red Storm tied the game in the 52nd minute when a cross from Himeno was headed home by Sverre Wegge Gundhus.

The lone threat from St. John's in either overtime came when Trevor Chiduku's shot from just inside the 18-yard box was blocked by the back of sophomore Kyle McTurk (Hauppauge, N.Y.).

Just when it appeared the game was headed for a tie, freshman Berian Gobeil (Montreal, Quebec) made a run down the right side of the field and found Quevedo just outside the 18-yard box but his shot went just right of the goal.
