GREENSBORO, N.C.-- Multiple athletes from all nine America East member institutions competed this past weekend at the NCAA East Regional Outdoor Track & Field Championship held at North Carolina A&T University in Greensboro, N.C. Five of those who competed finished in the top five in his or her respective event and automatically qualified for the NCAA National Championship to be held June 10-11 at University of Arkansas. Numerous other athletes are still eligible to compete in the national meet by way of an at-large selection.
Stony Brook distance runner Holly Van Dalen was the first America East athlete to automatically qualify for the NCAA National Friday night in the 5000 meters. Finishing fifth in a time of 16:13.35, Van Dalen set a new school record, bettering her seeded time of 16:14.17. Earlier Friday, sister Lucy ran the second-fastest preliminary time in the 1500 meters and the fastest time in her heat. On Saturday, she finished fourth overall with a time of 4:25.12, joining Holly as an automatic NCAA qualifier.
From the America East and IC4A Championship Albany men's team, seniors Joe Greene and Ricardo Estremera each placed in the top five of their events. Placing sixth after the preliminaries, Greene moved up to third in the finals of the 400 meter hurdles. He completed the event in a time of 50.21 to advance to the national meet in the hope of reclaiming his All-American status from 2007. Estremera overcame a broken shoe early in the 3000 meter steeplechase event to cross the finish line in fifth-place with a time of 8:52.76.
An All-American during both the indoor and outdoor seasons last year, Boston University's Tahari James qualified in the triple jump, finising third with a distance of 13.49 meters.
