BINGHAMTON, N.Y.- After the first day of competition at the 2009 America East Outdoor Track & Field Championship the University of New Hampshire men and women lead their respective fields.
The New Hampshire men earned 92.50 points after day one, earning them first-place ahead of University at Albany (57.33 points) and Binghamton University (45.33) in second and third, respectively. University of Vermont is in fourth place with 29 points, narrowly edging out fifth-place UMBC (24.50). University of Maine is in sixth with 14.33 points and rounding out the field is Boston University (5), Hartford University (4) and Stony Brook University (0).
The Wildcat women, who have 66 points, are ahead of second-place Boston University (39.5) and University at Albany (38.50) in a close third. Binghamton University holds the fourth-place spot with 30 points and is ahead of University of Maine (19) and University of Hartford (15) in fifth and sixth, respectively. Rounding out the women’s field is seventh-placed University of Vermont (11), followed by Stony Brook University (11) and UMBC (3).
The Wildcats earned a 1-2-3 sweep of the men’s 10,000 meter run led by senior Nicholas Decrescenzo’s time of 31:12.93. Teammates Wesley Dinnan, a junior, and Brent Powers, a senior, followed Decrescenzo across the line with times of 31:29.69 and 31:34.13, respectively.
New Hampshire’s Michael Simon earned first in the javelin throw with a distance of 60.38m as teammate Chris Morgan earned the runner-up spot (56.35m). Vermont freshman Mike Grubert earned the third spot with a throw of 55.79m.
The Great Danes earned the top three spots in the men’s long jump as junior Valete Graham jumped an impressive 7.55 meters, followed by sophomore Frederick Casimo (7.27m) and Michael McCadney (7.26m).
In the hammer throw, Albany’s Wilfredo de Jesus Elias’ throw required a longer tape to record his first-place distance of 61.05m. New Hampshire earned valuable points by earning second through fifth and seven of the Top Ten slots.
UMBC’s Victor Gilreath topped the field in the men’s high jump with a 1.98-meter jump, followed by a second-place tie between Binghamton’s Nelson Hall and New Hampshire’s Patrick Casey (1.93m)
Binghamton’s Robb Quiller, a freshman, earned first in the men’s pole vault (4.80m) leading Maine’s Mark Liimakka, Albany’s Michael Dempsey and Binghamton’s Eric VanAernam (4.65m) in a three-way tied for second.
Albany’s Ricardo Estremera won the 3,000-meter steeplechase in a time of 8:59.45, leading Vermont's Doug Maisey (9:04.22) and Maine’s Miles Bartlett (9:29.87).
New Hampshire women followed suit, earning the 1-2-3 sweep in the 10,000-meter run with freshman Keely Maquire (37:32.65) crossing first, followed by sophomore Erica Jesseman (37:56.29) and junior Courtney Hamer (38:06.73).
Binghamton’s Kiki Fifft won the pole vault for the women with a height of 3.30 meters, leading Boston’s Fiona Romeri (3.15m) and Albany’s Celine Cauderlier (3.15m).
Boston University topped the field in the long jump, with Tahari James defending her title with a jump of 6.04 meters. Teammates Whitney Ford (5.81m) and Edwina Clarke (5.76m) earned second and third, respectively.
New Hampshire’s Laura Stern earned top honors in the javelin with a distance of 45.68 meters and UMBC’s Jessica Bond (41.22m) and Alexandra Krous (4.57m) earned second and third, respectively.
Ashlee Lathrop earned first in the hammer throw for the Wildcats with a toss of 54.41m, topping Albany’s Kadine Johnson’s second ?place distance of 49.51 meters, and New Hampshire’s Erica Desroches’ toss of 45.26 meters, which was good enough for third.
Competition resumes at 9 a.m. on Saturday morning, with the 2009 men’s and women’s champions being crowned at approximately 3:30.
