Dalton, Quick and Sosnowski Honored With Women's Lacrosse Weekly Awards

CAMBRIDGE, Mass.-- Three women's lacrosse standouts helped their respective teams to crucial America East Conference wins last week and picked up weekly awards from the league office for the period ending April 5. For the second straight week, and third time this season, Boston University senior midfielder Sarah Dalton (Cornwall, Vt./Taft School) earned the league's Player of the Week. UMBC junior goalkeeper Kate Quick (Phoenix, Md./Maryvale Prep) earned the Defender of the Week accolade for the second time this season, while Albany attacker Melanie Sosnowski (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) was the recipient of the Rookie of the Week award for the first time in her career.

With 13 goals in two games last week, Dalton has now scored six or more goals in three straight games. She scored a game-high six goals to power a second-half comeback in a 9-8 win at No. 18 UNH on Wednesday. Dalton then netted seven goals at Stony Brook in a 17-13 win. Against the Wildcats, she scored the Terriers' first five goals of the second half to tie the game after Boston U. faced a 4-0 halftime deficit. The senior midfielder also finished the week with a team-high seven ground balls and six draw controls, while causing three turnovers.

Quick recorded 22 saves for a .595 save percentage in two games last week, allowing just 15 goals for a 7.50 GAA. She also picked up a team-high seven ground balls and caused three turnovers. In UMBC's victory over Binghamton, Quick made nine saves and allowed just four goals in 60 minutes, never allowing back-to-back tallies. Then against No. 19 New Hampshire, she recorded 13 saves and allowed just two second-half goals while the Retrievers attempted a comeback. Quick boasts a 10.37 GAA and a .496 save percentage on the season.

Sosnowski registered career highs in goals (3) and ground balls (4) in a 13-7 victory over Vermont on April 1. She kept a clearing play alive that led to Kayla Best's goal and the start of three unanswered with her team leading 8-5. Sosnowski notched back-to-back goals in a 35-second span that sealed the outcome with 5:31 remaining. She was held scoreless in her team's 17-11 win at Binghamton on April 4 but contributed two draw controls.

UAlbany (6-6, 3-1 America East) moved into second place in the America East Conference standings following victories over Vermont (13-7) and Binghamton (17-11) last week... The Great Danes have won five of their last six outings and are averaging 14.8 goals in that stretch... UAlbany is off to a 3-1 start in conference play for just the second time since joining the league... Kayla Best (Guilderland, N.Y./Guilderland) and Melanie Sosnowski (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Massapequa) each scored three times against Vermont... Best, who totaled four goals and one assist at Binghamton, extended her goal-scoring streak to 42 games in a row, the nation’s third-longest mark... Best moved to seventh on the program’s all-time scoring list with 137 points (111 goals, 26 assists)... Sosnowski scored twice in a 35-second span to seal the outcome and scooped up four ground balls against UVM... Taylor Frink (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) accounted for a career-high five points (3 goals, 2 assists) vs. Binghamton... The sophomore midfielder scored twice in a four-goal run during the second half that broke the contest open... Frink added a career-best three assists against Vermont... Goalkeeper Katie Neer (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) recorded her first assist as a collegian on a clearing play to start the second half at Binghamton... Neer is fifth on the program’s career saves list with 252... Mel Rorie (Landsdale, Pa./North Penn) tied a caree high with four points (3 g, 1 a) at Binghamton... Rorie has totaled four points on four occasions this season... Nikki Branchini (Guilderland, N.Y. / Guilderland) had nine draw controls, a career high, at Binghamton... Branchini, who is among the top-20 nationally in that category at 3.58 per game, helped hold Vermont to a season-low goal total by an opponent.

Binghamton (2-9, 0-3) lost their first game of the week while visiting UMBC, 16-4 at UMBC Stadium. Freshman Meg Brown picked up three ground balls, and caused two turnovers, while sophomore Siobhan Menz grabbed three ground balls and snagged a draw control. Binghamton was out shot, 29-20, in the game, and converted only 1-of-9 free position shots. The Bearcats' second loss of the week came at the hands of the University at Albany where they were defeated 17-11 on a frigid, rainy Saturday evening at the Bearcats Sports Complex. Sophomore Ali Castiglie led the Bearcats with three goals, while fellow sophomores Kate Tesi and Lisa Illig each added two. This coming week, Binghamton heads out on the road to face LeMoyne on Tuesday, April 7 at 4 p.m. and then travels to Stony Brook on Saturday, April 11 at 1 p.m.

Boston University (8-3, 3-0), ranked 12th in the nation, won a pair of America East games last week to extend its winning streak to six games... The Terriers rallied from a 4-0 halftime deficit to capture a 9-8 win at No. 18 New Hampshire on Wednesday and earned a 17-13 win at Stony Brook on Saturday... The Terriers are the only team that remains unbeaten in America East play... The Terriers have now won 13 straight America East regular-season games, 18 straight games against America East opponents and 27 straight games against unranked opponents... Senior Sarah Dalton (Cornwall, Vt./Taft School) scored 13 goals last week and now sits on the cusp of becoming the Terriers’ all-time leading scorer... Dalton has 241 career points, one shy of the record held by Chrissy Lombard (1998-2001)... Junior Rachel Klein (Forest Hill, Md./Roland Park) made a career-high 16 saves against the Wildcats on Wednesday ... Freshman Hannah Frey (Nyack, N.Y./Nanuet) extended her goal-scoring streak to 11 games... Frey has scored in every game of her collegiate career and is the only Terrier to score a goal in every game this season... This week, the Terriers play a pair of road games, visiting Boston College on Wednesday and traveling to Vermont for an America East matchup on Saturday... Wednesday’s game at BC will be a “Power in Pink” game to raise money for breast cancer research.

UMBC (6-7, 2-2) split a pair of America East home games last week, defeating Binghamton, 16-4, on Wednesday, before falling to 19th-ranked New Hampshire, 11-8, on Saturday... Senior attack Abbey Swift (Baltimore, Md./Towson) scored a career-high five goals against the Bearcats... She also added six caused turnovers and four ground balls... Senior midfielder Kara Dorr (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) tallied five points on three goals and two assists... Swift and Dorr each scored three times in the first period as the Retrievers built a 9-2 halftime lead... Junior midfielder Amanda Gable (Mount Airy, Md./Glenelg) set a career high with four points on three goals and a helper... Sophomore midfielder Amanda Pappas (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake) tallied four points on a goal and a career-best three assists... Junior goalie Kate Quick (Phoenix, Md./Maryvale Prep) made nine saves and never allowed back-to-back goals... The Retrievers outscored the Wildcats, 5-2, in the second period while attempting to comeback from a seven-goal first-half deficit... Quick made 13 saves and was brilliant in the second stanza, stopping seven of nine shots on goal... Dorr leads the Retrievers with 33 goals and 41 points on the season... The Retrievers hit the road for two games this week, taking on regional rival American on Wednesday and America East foe Albany on Saturday.

Nineteenth-ranked UNH (8-4, 2-2) saw its 10-game home winning streak come to an end April 1 with a 9-8 loss to 12th-ranked Boston University... The Wildcats then recorded an 11-8 road win against UMBC on April 4... UNH shut out BU in the first half; the last time the ?Cats held an opponent scoreless for an entire half was April 28, 2004 (Vermont; 1st half)... Senior midfielder Ashley Durepo (Concord, N.H./Concord) recorded her 100th career point with the second of her two goals vs. BU; she enters the week with 76 goals and 24 assists for 100 points... Senior defender Kelli LaPerch (Brewster, N.Y./Brewster) tallied her 100th career ground ball with the first of three at UMBC... Freshman goalkeeper Kate Gunts (Wilton, Conn./Wilton) recorded double digits in saves for the first time in her career with 11 against Boston U.... Allie Duclos (South Windsor, Conn.), Beth Sabiston (Bayshore, N.Y./Bayshore) and Durepo have recorded double digits in ground balls, caused turnovers and draw controls... Susie Piotrkowski (Franklin, Conn./Norwich Free Academy) is the only ?Cat who has recorded double figures in both goals and assists... Each of the last four meetings between UNH and BU at Memorial Field have been decided by one or two goals... UNH is 8-1 when scoring double digits in goals... The Wildcats are 7-1 when scoring the first goal and have the same record when leading at halftime... Nine UNH Wildcats have started all 12 games.

Stony Brook (3-10, 0-3) lost its sixth straight game, falling to #12 Boston University, 17-13... Senior Kaitlin Leggio (Bay Shore, N.Y./Bay Shore), who led Stony Brook with four goals and an assist, is now just six goals away from breaking the school record of 148... Leggio also had three ground balls and seven draw controls... Sophomore Courtney Bertolone (Farmingville, N.Y./Robert Morris) and Victoria Cable (Oakton, Va./Oakton) each chipped in with two goals apiece... The Seawolves continue their three game homestand on Saturday vs. Binghamton... First draw is slated for 1 p.m.

Vermont (7-5, 2-1) suffered its first league loss of the year, dropping a 13-7 decision at Albany in the lone game of the week ... Senior Kristen Millar (Whitby, Ontario/Sinclair Secondary) scored two goals to move into a tie for the all-time leader in goals scored, sharing the mark of 133 career goals with former standout Vanessa Cox '05... Millar also extended her consecutive points streak to 59 straight games and climbed within reach of the all-time NCAA mark in draw controls ... She collected three against the Great Danes and begins the week 11 shy of breaking the mark set by Dana Dobbie (Maryland '08) last year... Millar leads the country in draw controls and caused turnovers ... Freshman Allison Pfohl (Niskayuna, N.Y./Niskayuna) enters the week with 27 goals on the season, two shy of tying the mark for most goals in a single-season by a rookie at UVM which was set by teammate Megan MacDonald (Wayland, Mass./Wayland) last season...
