Loudonville, N.Y.-- On yet another gorgeous afternoon in the Capital Region, University at Albany successfully defended its team crown at the 2009 America East Golf Championship Sunday afternoon at Shaker Ridge Country Club, winning its second straight championship and third overall. Sophomore Corrin Conroy, who shared medalist honors last year, won the individual title outright this year to lead the Great Danes.
The Great Danes combined for a 36-hole team score of 638, extending their lead to 25 strokes. Boston University, the team runner-up, recorded a two-day score of 664. University of Hartford followed behind seven strokes with a 671.
Conroy carded a 73 in the final round to surge to the top of the standings with a 155 after sitting in sixth-place with an 84 after day one. Conroy's second-round score eclipsed the championship's 18-hole score record which Boston U.'s Ana Johnson set at 75 on Saturday. She also broke her own school record which she set during the fall season. Johnson, who entered day two atop the leaderboard, followed up her record-setting first round with an 84 on Sunday and finished in second-place with a score of 159.
Conroy's round on Saturday included an eagle on the 17th hole, as she finished the back nine one under par.
The championship's previous 36-hole low score of 162, accomplished just last season, was bettered by five players at this year's America East Championship, including Conroy and Johnson. Hartford's Megan Claxton, and Albany teammates Stephanie Klein and Jessica Signorelli rounded out the top five golfers tied for third with scores of 161.
Doc Sauers, the Albany head coach, earned Coach of the Year accolades on Sunday after leading his squad to the team title. In addition to the individual medalist and the team champion, the top five perfomers earn All-Conference distinction.
