CAMBRIDGE, Mass.-- The match-ups are now set for the 2009 America East Women's Lacrosse Championship after regular-season play wrapped up on Saturday. Boston University, University at Albany and University of New Hampshire had clinched playoff berths prior to the weekend, while Vermont earned the fourth and final seed in the tournament with a 19-11 victory over Stony Brook earlier in the day.
The 2009 America East Women's Lacrosse Championship will get underway this Thursday, April 30 with two semifinals, and then conclude with the championship game at 1 p.m. on Saturday, May 2. All rounds will be played at Boston University's Nickerson Field due to the Terriers' first-place finish during the regular season. The winner of the tournament will receive an automatic berth to the NCAA Championship.
No. 1 Boston U. (13-3, 6-0 AE) and No. 4 Vermont (9-7, 3-3 AE) will kick off the tournament in the first semifinal Thursday at 1 p.m. During the regular season, Boston U. recorded a come-from-behind victory up in Burlington. The Catamounts never trailed in the first half of that game, but then the Terriers, led by freshman Hannah Frey's five points, rallied in the second stanza to take the 12-9 win.
The second semifinal between No. 2 Albany (9-7, 4-2 AE) and No. 3 New Hampshire (11-6, 4-2 AE) at 3:30 p.m. sets up a rematch of a regular-season upset which the Great Danes pulled off back on March 21, 16-15 in overtime. The win marked Albany's first over a ranked opponent in the program's Division I history. UNH was ranked 13th nationally at the time. The Wildcats are making its 12th-straight appearance in the conference tournament, and their third straight as the No. 3 seed.
Tickets, available day of games, are $8 for adults, $5 for youth under 14 and $2 for all America East students with valid school ID.
