VESTAL,
N.Y. -- Binghamton baseball pitcher Greg
Lane is among 45 players on the midseason watch list for
the fifth annual National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association
(NCBWA) Stopper of the Year award. Lane is the only America East
reliever on the national list.
The
watch list was compiled from nominations submitted by sports
information contacts and conference media relations offices nationwide.
The list of finalists will be announced on May 27. The NCBWA's
All-America Committee then will select the winner, with this
year's recipient to be announced Saturday, June 13, before the
opening of NCAA College World Series.
Lane
is coming off an outstanding week for the Bearcats, who are 8-2
in America East play and aiming for the program's third consecutive
regular season title. He saved BU's non-conference win over Siena
on Tuesday and then posted two victories in relief against rival
Stony Brook on the weekend, helping BU win three of four in the
series.
He
is 2-1 with five saves and a 3.78 ERA this spring. In conference
play, he has allowed just one hit in seven scoreless innings
of work.
Lane
was dominant in 2008, leading the Bearcats to their second straight
America East regular season title and runnerup postseason finish.
He compiled a school-record and conference-leading 11 saves and
was selected as a first team America East all-star. Lane, a 6-foot-2
righthander, owned a 1.97 earned run average and chipped in three
wins in addition to his saves total.
