NEW YORK - University of Vermont's Marqus Blakely, the two-time Kevin Roberson America East Player of the Year,
has been named to the Associated Press All-America Team as an honorable mention
choice for the second straight season. The announcement was made by the AP on Monday, March 30.
Blakely, a junior forward, ranked among league leaders in several statistical categories, finishing fifth in scoring with 16.1 points per game and second 61 percent of his shots from the field. He also became the first player in 23 years to lead the league in rebounding (9.0 rpg), blocked shots (2.7 bpg) and steals (2.0 spg). Reggie Lewis last accomplished the feat for Northeastern during the 1985-86 season.
Blakely became just the fifth player in America East history to capture Player of the Year honors in successive seasons and also became the league's first repeat Defensive Player of the Year in the seven years the award has been given out. He led the Catamounts, who finished 24-9 overall and a earned share of the America East regular-season crown, to the quarterfinals of the College Basketball Invitational.
