CAMBRIDGE, Mass.-- Fresh off their upset win over a nationally-ranked opponent and after taking three out of four in an America East weekend series, two Stony Brook Seawolves were named weekly award winners for the period ending April 12. Senior outfielder Michael Tansey (Valley Stream, N.Y./Holy Trinity) received Player of the Week accolades for the second time this season, while freshman right-handed hurler Tyler Johnson (Chatsworth, Calif./Crespi Carmelite) received Pitcher of the Week honors, also for the second time in 2009. Rounding out the weekly awards was Hartford freshman reliever Cory Beahm (Burtonsville, Md./St. John's), who claimed Rookie of the Week.
Tansey batted .429 in 21 at-bats last week, slugging two homers and three doubles. He drove in six runs for the week, one of which came in the Seawolves’ 6-2 victory at No. 11 Virginia last Wednesday. In America East action, Tansey went 2-for-4 with an RBI in SBU’s 8-0 win over UMBC on Friday, and then went 3-for-4 with three RBI and three runs scored in a 9-6 win over the Retrievers during the first game of Saturday’s doubleheader. In the fifth inning, he drove in the go-ahead run with a double. Tansey capped the series by going 2-for-5, including a home run, in the Seawolves’ 11-5 win later in the day Saturday.
Johnson picked up two wins last week, bringing his season record to 4-1, in a start and a relief appearance. He came in to pitch the fifth inning against No. 11 Virginia on Wednesday and induced all three batters he faced into groundouts to pick up the decision in the 6-2 win. Later in the week, he hurled a three-hit shutout to lead the Seawolves to an 8-0 victory over UMBC on Friday. Johnson struck out seven batters and walked just two, while retiring the last 10 batters he faced to earn the win in the seven-inning game. He finished the week with an ERA of 0.00 in eight innings pitched.
Beahm made a relief appearance in each of Hartford’s three games last week, surrendering just one hit and no runs in 4.2 innings of work. Against Holy Cross, he pitched the eighth inning, striking out two of the three batters he faced. In the series opener against league foe Maine, Beahm pitched the final inning, getting all three outs by way of the k. In the second game of the day against the Black Bears, he earned the win by pitching the final 2.2 innings in the 7-6 victory that lasted 11 frames. The freshman finished the week with six strikeouts against only two walks.

centerfielder Dave West (Toms

North) went 3-for-4 with a home run to lead UAlbany to a 5-4 win over Marist in
the first game of a doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon... Freshman Mike Tirri
(Lake George, N.Y./Lake George) knocked out an RBI-single in game two to send
two baserunners home to give UAlbany a 2-1 comeback win over the Red Foxes...
Senior right hander Josh Willimott (East Greenbush, N.Y./Columbia) threw seven
innings of one-hit ball, leading UAlbany to a 2-1 win over Binghamton in the first game on Saturday
afternoon at Varsity Field... Willimott struck out seven without issuing a walk
in his performance... Righty Sean Gregory (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) came into the game in relief in the
eighth inning and tossed the final three shutout frames for the Great Danes...
Gregory scattered just three hits, keeping the Great Danes in control... UAlbany
loaded the bases in the bottom of the 10th, as sophomore second baseman Kyle
Crean (Miller Place,
N.Y./Miller Place) was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning... Crean advanced to
second on a sacrifice bunt by West and later scored the winning run on an error
by the Binghamton
second baseman... Senior catcher Ryan Gugel (Batavia, N.Y./Batavia/Genesee C.C.) hit two
home runs in the series finale, giving him a team-leading five on the season.
Binghamton (12-13, 5-1) went 3-3 on the week but won 3
of 4 conference games to take over first place in the standings. The Bearcats will host 6-2 Stony Brook in a
key series next Saturday and Sunday... The Bearcats put their pitching staff to
test with six games in a five-day span.
Ten pitchers threw at least three innings in that span and held down a
4.56 ERA. Opponents hit just .233 during
the week... After dropping two non-conference games and the first game in the
Albany series, Binghamton rallied with three straight wins, including a pair of
lopsided victories on Sunday... Senior 3B Kyle Klee (Rochester, N.Y./McQuaid Jesuit HS)
hit .348 with six RBI on the week. Klee
hit .400 (6-for-15) with a three-run home run and six RBI against Albany...
Sophomore center fielder Henry Dunn (Rockville Centre, N.Y./South Side HS)
returned to the lineup after an injury and hit .667 (8-for-12) with a .714
on-base percentage in three games... Sophomore catcher C.J. Lukaszewski
(Kingston, N.Y./Kingston HS) hit .556 in the Albany series and is hitting .571
in league play thus far... Junior second baseman Jim Calderone (Home Glen,
Ill./Brother Rice HS/Oakton CC) hit .375 during the week... Freshman first baseman Dave Ciocchi (Hopewell Junction,
N.Y./John Jay HS) hit .333 with four RBI during the week and raised his
conference-game average to .381 with eight RBI... Senior lefty Jeff Dennis
(North Syracuse, N.Y./Liverpool HS) earned his second win of the spring with
5.1 innings of two-run pitching... The Smith brothers had a strong combined
effort against Albany that nonetheless yielded no victory... In a bid for his sixth win of the season,
junior starter Murphy Smith (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa HS) allowed just
one run on three hits in 5.0 innings before being forced to leave the game with

(Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa HS) tossed three hitless innings of relief
before departing with a no decision... Senior closer Greg Lane (Binghamton, N,Y./Binghamton) didn't allow a run in three appearances
during the week. Lane struck out two with
the bases loaded to preserve a tie in extra innings at Albany. He then notched his fourth save of the spring
in Binghamton's 5-4 win.
The Hartford baseball team (6-16, 1-3) was
2-1 in three games last week ... They opened the week with a come-from-behind win
over the Holy Cross Crusaders in their only mid-week game ... down by four going
into the ninth, the Hawks scored four runs to tie the game, with three of those
runs coming from players who walked to reach base ... Andy Drexel (Pequea, PA/Penn Manor) led the team with a 4-for-5
showing at the plate with six RBI and a run scored. Simon Kudernatsch (Czech Republic/Prague West) and Ben Sobocinski (Waldorf, MD/McDounough)
also finished with two RBI for Hartford, while Matt Walker (East Lyme, CT/Catawba College) finished 2-for-2
at the plate ... The Hawks then split the first two games of a four-game series
with the Maine Black Bears ... The Hawks dropped the early game by a 2-1 score ...
Hartford put its only run on the board in the early going, scoring in the
second inning, making a leadoff single from Sobocinski pay off, when he was
walked home on a walk to Cory Beahm
(Burtownsville, MD/St. John’s) ... The Black Bears then scored single runs in the
sixth and seventh to score their first conference victory ...Iin the second game
of the day, Hartford held a 5-2 advantage going into the eight inning, when the
Black Bears tied the game with a single swing of the bat, a home rune from Kyle
Stilphen ... The teams then traded two more runs in the bottom of the eighth and
the top of the ninth, forcing extra innings ... Hartford was the only squad to
score in the extra frames, as Drexel knocked in Victor Santana (Plainville, CT/Plainville) to score the
game-winning run ... Beahm earned the victory in the second game, in his third
relief appearance of the week. He pitched 4.2 innings this week, not allowing a
run, while giving up only one hit and striking out six batters ... At the plate,
the Hawks were led by Sobocinski and Drexel, who finished with .462 and .385
batting averages respectively ... Sobocinski finished 6-of-13 for the week with
two RBI and three runs scored, while Drexel finished 5-for-13 with seven RBI
and one run scored ... The Hawks will close out the series with Maine on Monday
at 1 p.m., before playing mid-week games at Connecticut (Tuesday at 3
p.m.) and home against Rhode Island (Wednesday at 3 p.m.) ...The Hawks close
out a busy week with a three-game series against NJIT at the Hartford Baseball
Field on Saturday and Sunday.
The
University of Maine baseball team (18-13, 1-1) split a
doubleheader with Hartford on Sunday afternoon... The games scheduled for
Saturday were postponed due to rain and will be made up on Monday afternoon...
Maine won the first game 2-1, before dropping the second game 7-6 in 11
innings... The loss in the second game snapped Maine’s five-game winning streak...
In the first game of the day on Sunday, Maine scored a run in the sixth to tie
the game and a run in the seventh to win it... The Black Bears played 11 innings
in the second game on Sunday, the longest game of the season for Maine... Senior
Kevin McAvoy (Brewer. Maine/Brewer) saw his 19-game hitting streak snapped in
the second game against Hartford on Sunday... McAvoy only had one at bat in the
game and finished 0-1... Senior Danny Menendez (Miami, Fla./Christopher Columbus)
entered the week ranked second in the nation in sacrifice bunts with 11...
Menendez has played in 97 straight games for the Black Bears... Maine has turned
40 double plays on the season after recording four on Sunday, including three
in the first game... Alejandro Balsinde (Miami, Fla./Christopher Columbus) leads
Maine with four saves on the season... He has 12 career saves which ranks fifth
on Maine’s all-time saves list... Balsinde has 72 career appearances... The Black
Bears will face Hartford in a doubleheader on Monday afternoon, before
returning home to host UMBC in a series the weekend of April 18 and 19.
The UMBC
baseball team (5-22, 1-7) lost four out of five games this past week,
including three of four to Stony Brook this weekend. The 7-4 win on Friday over
Stony Brook snapped a 12-game losing streak. Senior Tom Meaney (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem) hit a three-run walk-off home run to
defeat the Seawolves... Meaney now has six home runs on the season, tied with
fellow senior Shawn Retz (Baltimore, Md./Western
Tech/Catonsville C.C.) for the team lead, while his 29 RBI leads the
Retrievers... Retz continues his torrid pace at the plate, hitting .426 with 22
RBI and 14 extra-base hits... Junior transfer Dustin Ferguson (North East, Md./North East/Cecil College)
hit .417 in four games this week, including his first home run as a Retriever
in an 11-6 loss to Stony Brook Saturday... The Retrievers play host to in-state
rival Maryland Wednesday night at 7 p.m. before traveling to Maine for a
four-game series Saturday and Sunday.
The
Seawolves (16-13, 6-2) opened the week by splitting a pair of games with #11 Virginia before
taking three of four at UMBC ... The 6-2 victory over the Cavaliers on Wednesday
was the Seawolves' first victory over a ranked team since joining Division I in
2000 ... Stony Brook scored five first-inning runs on its way to the victory over
the Cavaliers ... Freshman Tyler Johnson, junior Jordan Purington, freshman Nick
Tropeano and junior Jeremy Nowak combined for 5.0 scoreless innings of relief
in the win over UVA ... SBU then opened its series at UMBC with an 8-0 win on
Friday afternoon ... Johnson hurled a three-hit shutout to lead the Seawolves to
the victory, striking out seven and walking two ... Johnson retired the last 10
batters he faced to earn in the win in the seven-inning game ... After dropping the
second game of Friday’s doubleheader, 7-4, the Seawolves opened Saturday’s
doubleheader with a 9-6 victory over the Retrievers ... Senior Michael Tansey
went 3-for-4 with three RBI and three runs scored in the win ... Tansey drove in
the go-ahead run with a run-scoring double in the fifth ... Freshman Nick Tropeano picked up the victory for
the Seawolves as he went the distance in the seven-inning game, allowing four
earned runs on eight hits ... the right hander struck out six and walked two ... Johnson
and Tropeano are tied for the team lead in wins (four), complete games (two)
and strikeouts (33) ... Stony Brook then completed the sweep of Saturday’s
doubleheader with an 11-5 win over the Retrievers ... The Seawolves scored six runs in the second
on their way to the victory.
Vermont (7-18, 1-3) won two out of three at the Catamount Baseball Classic over the
weekend at Historic Centennial Field ... The Catamounts dropped a 7-6 decision
to Manhattan Friday before bouncing back with a 3-2 comeback win over the
Jaspers Saturday ... UVM topped NJIT, 6-1, in the finale of the round-robin
classic Saturday ... Friday's game was Vermont's home opener to kick off the 103rd
year a UVM team has competed at Centennial Field, which opened in April of 1906
... Vermont had quality starts in all three games highlighted by a nine-inning
complete game win by Justin Albert
(Hull, Mass/Hull) over Manhattan and a dominating seven-inning performance by Keith Rakus (West Suffield,
Conn./Suffield Academy) to top NJIT ... Albert allowed eight hits, two runs,
two walks and struck out three against the Jaspers, one of the top hitting
teams in the Northeast ,,, Rakus struck out a career-high 12, walked three and
gave up only two hits in his best start of the season. After allowing the lone
run in the second, he struck out nine of the next 11 Highlanders as Vermont
seized control of the game ... In his last 13 innings over the last two weekends,
Rakus has allowed only nine hits while striking out 17 and has earned two
victories ... Senior C Jeff Nolet (Concord,
Mass./Concord-Carlisle) went 6-for-10 with two RBI in three games to elevate
his season average to .321 ... Sophomore OF Mark Micowski (Haddam, Conn./Xavier) went 5-for-14 (.357) over the
weekend with a triple and three stolen bases. He now leads the Catamounts with
14 steals ...

Milo (Edina, Minn./Edina/Cornell), a second-team all-conference pick in
