UMBC Sweeps Men's Lacrosse Weekly Accolades

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - On the heels of its sixth straight win, UMBC has swept America East Men's Lacrosse weekly accolades as Peet Poillon (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley/Ohio State) and Justin Radebaugh (Lutherville, Md./Boys' Latin) have been named Player and Rookie of theWeek, respectively. The honors for the week ending April 12 were announced on Monday afternoon.

Poillon set the tone with a career-high tying four goals in the Retrievers' 15-7 win over nationally ranked Albany on Saturday. The senior transfer from Ohio State tallied three of the game's first five scores to help stake UMBC to a 6-0 lead after one quarter. Poillon, who leads a midfield unit that is acclaimed as the best in the nation, also added an assist and three ground balls. He is tied for the league lead in assists (16), tied for second in points (37) and tied for fifth in goals (21).

Radebaugh  played a crucial role in the Retrievers' win over Albany winning a career-high 16 face offs and picking up a career-best 10 ground balls, which is tops in America East this season. Radebaugh, a freshmen midfielder, won 66.7 percent  (16-of-24) of his draws, including 10-of-14 in the first half in which UMBC outshot their opponent 34-12 en route to a 10-2 halftime lead. Radebaugh, who also tallied his first career point on an assist in the third quarter, has won 30-of-45 draws over the last two games in which UMBC has outscore their opponents 28-11.

UMBC moved up one spot to sixth in the USILA Coaches Poll after its 15-7 win at No. 18 Albany Saturday. Despite the lopsided win, the Retrievers fell two spots to eighth in the Nike/Inside Lacrosse Media Poll. Albany maintained its No. 18 ranking in the Inside Lacrosse Poll for the fourth straight week, but fell one spot to 20th in the Coaches' Poll after its loss to UMBC. Stony Brook, which has won back-to-back league games, also received votes in the USILA Poll for the second time this season.

The Retrievers can lock up the top seed for the America East Championship with a win at Hartford Saturday. Stony Brook and Albany can also lock up tournament bids with respective wins over Binghamton and Vermont.

Albany (6-4, 2-1 America East) lost its first-place showdown with America East leader UMBC on April 11... the 15-7 defeat was the largest loss margin at home since March 19, 2002... The Retrievers, the nation’s No. 7 team in the latest USILA poll, took control right from the start with six unanswered goals in the first quarter... UAlbany will meet its third top-10 squad this season when the Great Danes travel to #6 Syracuse on April 17... Corey Small (St. Catharines, Ontario / Holy Cross) returned to the lineup after a four-game absence due to leg surgery... Small’s rehabilitation was aided by a VAC (Vacuum Assisted Closure) device that helped to heal the surgical wound and eliminate infection... The senior attacker had two second-half goals against UMBC and needs four more to become the 10th UAlbany player to reach 100 career goals... Joe Resetarits (Hamburg, N.Y. / Hamburg) totaled three or more points for the seventh consecutive game against UMBC... Resetarits, one of the top freshman scorers in the nation, had two goals and one assist... Brian Caufield (West Islip, N.Y. / Bay Shore) is among the top-10 Division I scorers with 37 points (21 goals, 16 assists)... Caufield is averaging 3.7 points in 23 career games played as a collegian...Dan McKeon (Camillus, N.Y. / West Genesee) made his first start at goalkeeper since April 28, 2007 against UMBC... John Alpizar (Summit, N.J. / Summit) and McKeon were two of 10 seniors making their final home regular-season appearance last Saturday... Alpizar has 17 goals and 41 assists during his career... Chris Schongar (Clifton Park, N.Y. / Shenendehowa) is 35th nationally in ground balls (4.0 pg)... Mark Cometti (Syracuse, N.Y. / West Genesee) will miss the remainder of the season with a broken left fibula... Cometti is one of three regular midfielders on the shelf with injuries.

Binghamton (2-9, 1-2 America East) averaged 8.5 goals in its two games last week. Senior attack Jake Boyce (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford) scored three times last week, giving him 56 goals for his career. He is two goals away from tying Rob Williams (2004-07) for second place all time in school history ... senior goalie Larry Kline (Beverly, Mass./Beverly) had a .571 save percentage last week, stopping 20 of the 35 shots on goal against him.

Hartford (0-10, 0-3 America East) lost to Stony Brook by a 15-11 final last week at Alumni Stadium. The game was tied 5-5 at the half, and the Hawks took their only lead at the start of the third quarter. The Seawolves, however, outscored the Hawks 7-2 for the rest of the quarter to take conrol... Freshman Ryan Compitello (Hauppauge, N.Y./Hauppauge) led the Hawks in scoring for the week with three goals and two assists for a career-high five points against Stony Brook. It marked his second consecutive hat trick and the second of his career. He now leads the team in scoring for the season with 14 goals and 10 assists for 24 po ints... Junior Justin Bearse (Hyannis, Mass./Barnstable) also added three goals and an assist against the Seawolves. It was his second hat trick of the season... Rookie Scott Bement (Canandaigua, N.Y./Canandaigua) recorded eight saves in goal against the Seawolves. He leads the team 90 saves on the season... Hartford will play a pair of home games this week. The Hawks will first host Presbyterian College on Monday, April 13 at 4 p.m. Hartford wraps up the week with its home finale against UMBC on Saturday, April 18 at 1 p.m. The Hawks will honor their seven seniors prior to the contest.

UMBC (9-2, 3-0 America East) senior midfielder Peet Poillon (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley/Ohio State) scored three of his game-high four goals in the first quarter leading seventh-ranked UMBC to a convincing 15-7 win over America East rival Albany in a battle for first place in the conference on April 11... The Retrievers have won six straight and improved to 9-2 overall and 3-0 in league play... UMBC has now won 12 straight regular season conference contests...Six of the previous nine match-ups between UMBC and Albany had been decided by a single goal, including the 2008 America East title game, in which UMBC rallied from an 11-2 second quarter deficit to win 14-13 in Baltimore... But the Retrievers jumped on the hosts from the start, taking a 6-0 first quarter lead and margins of 10-2 at halftime and 13-4 after three quarters... UMBC outshot Albany, 34-12, in the first 30 minutes, won 10 of 14 draws and enjoyed a 31-8 margin in ground balls...Freshman midfielder Justin Radebaugh (Lutherville, Md./Boys’ Latin) continued his surge in the face-off circle, as he won 16 of 24 draws and collected a season-high 10 ground balls... He also recorded his first career point, an assist in the second half... He has 31 saves and only allowed 14 goals in UMBC’s last three outings... UMBC has averaged 14.0 goals per game in the last four games and are allowing only 5.0 in the last three outings... The Retrievers won their third straight in the series, vs. Albany and now lead it, 7-3...The eight-goal margin of victory is the largest by either team in six regular season meetings, shy by one of UMBC’s 19-10 win in the 2006 America East title game... Latham has 22 goals in his last eight America East outings and has eight goals in his last three games vs. Albany... UMBC is 9-0 when Latham scores this season... He scored his 50th career goal vs. the Great Danes... UMBC’s 42 wins over this current four-year period (42-17) ties the most in any four-year span (1974-77) in school history... Stony Brook’s (6-4, 2-1 America East) 15 goals at Hartford was its second-highest total of the season and the most in over a month ... in all of Stony Brook’s wins the Seawolves have scored at least 10 goals ... freshmen accounted for eight of the 15 goals against the Hawks ... Stony Brook has now won four of its five games on the road ... Stony Brook won a season best 25 of 29 face-offs at Hartford ... the Seawolves have won better than 50 percent of its face-offs in every game but two  ... Jordan McBride’s two goals against Hartford gives him nine straight games with at least two goals  ... McBride’s goals kept his scoring streak alive going back to last season ... he has now scored a point in 17 straight games, tops on the team ... McBride is now 13th all-time at SBU with 73 career goals  ... Stony Brook has picked up more ground balls than its opponent in five straight games ... Stony Brook has had a different starting lineup in each of the last four games ... sophomore Adam Rand has been hot in the face-off circle ... over his last four games he has won over 74 percent of his attempts ... Stony Brook has scored five or more goals in a quarter five times this season, including in each of the last two games ... the Seawolves have scored the first goal in the game six times, winning five of those contests ... All of Stony Brook’s wins and losses have come in streaks of at least two this season.

Vermont (4-8, 1-2 America East) dropped a 12-11 double overtime decision to Holy Cross on Tuesday and lost at Binghamton on Saturday 8-4 ... Senior Andrew Kelleher (Delmar, N.Y./Bethlehem) scored three goals in the loss to the Crusaders and has a team leading 32 goals and 40 points on the season ... His 32 goals on the year are more than his career total entering the season (29) ... His 40 points match his career total enter the year ... Kelleher has at least one point in 11 of 12 games ... Freshman Geoff Worley (Coronado, Calif./Coronado) also had three goals in the loss to Holy Cross ... Worley has registered a multi-point game in 11 of 12 contests ... He ranks second on the team in scoring with 15 goals and 29 points ... Sophomore Derek Lichtfuss (Lutherville, Md./St. Paul’s) had two goals and two assists on the week and is third on the team in scoring with 19 goals and 27 points ... Kelleher, Worley and Lichtfuss have accounted for 73-percent of Vermont’s goal scoring this season (65 of 89 goals) ... The trio has combined for 94 points ... Sophomore Max Gradinger (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif./Torrey Pines) had eight ground balls in the two games last week and has a team leading 37 ground balls on the season ... Freshman Alex Plavner (Arnold, Md./Severn School) mad his first career start on Saturday against Binghamton and made nine saves ... Vermont hosts Albany on Sunday at 1 p.m. at Moulton Winder Field ... Team posters, compliments of the UPS Store Downtown Burlington will be given to the first 100 fans ...
