Great Danes Sweep Men's Lacrosse Weekly Awards

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - University at Albany downed Delaware 15-12 in men's lacrosse action last week behind the offense of senior attack Corey Small (St. Catharines, Ontario/Holy Cross) and the goaltending of freshman backstop John Carroll (Nesconset, N.Y./Smithtown East). For their efforts the pair has been named America East Player and Rookie of the Week, respectively.

Small scored a career-high eight goals, tying the program's Division I single-game record set by Merrick Thomson against Hartford in 2004. Delaware had cut the lead to 7-6 in the third quarter, but Small, a Tewaarton Trophy nominee, ran off three of the game's next four scores to increase the margin back up to five. Small has registered at least one point in 20 straight games, which is tied for the sixth longest stretch in the country.

Carroll, a freshman goaltender, made a career-high 13 stops, including six in the fourth quarter alone. Carroll, who has recorded double-digit stops in all three of his collegiate starts, stopped 52 percent of shots he faced and also picked up a career-best four ground balls.

The Great Danes are receiving votes in both national polls, while UMBC dropped to ninth in the USILA Coaches Poll and 10th in the Inside Lacrosse Media Poll after a pair of tightly-contested to No. 3 Princeton and No. 6 Johns Hopkins.

Albany (2-1, 0-0 America East) held off Delaware, 15-12, on March 6 at John Fallon Field... The Blue Hens, who had won four of the previous six meetings, trailed 13-7 after three periods, but began the final quarter with five unanswered... UAlbany regrouped when Corey Small (St. Catharines, Ontario / Holy Cross) was tripped in the box, but the play continued with a flag down and Brian Caufield (Bay Shore, N.Y. / West Islip) sent a crossing pass to Joe Pompo (Syracuse, N.Y. / West Genesee) who connected on a blast into the net with 2:57 to play... Small tied the school’s Division I single-game record when he split a defensive double-team for his eighth goal of the game one minute and 24 seconds later ... The Great Danes, who avenged a triple-overtime loss to Delaware one year ago, had built an 11-6 lead in the third quarter... Small, who found the cage three straight times in one stretch, matched Merrick Thomson’s Division I standard for goals that was established against Hartford on April 21, 2004... Small, who has 114 career points, has scored at least one point in 20 consecutive games and has netted three-plus goals on 13 occasions as a collegian... Pompo finished with three goals, the seventh straight contest he has scored multiple times... long-stick midfielder Chris Schongar (Clifton Park, N.Y. / Shenendehowa) had seven ground balls, one his career-best effort... goalkeeper John Carroll recorded career-highs in saves (13) and ground balls (4)... the freshman has made double-figure stops in all three starts at the collegiate level... Kyle Crotty (Bethpage, N.Y. / Bethpage) equaled a career-high with two points (one goal, one assist)... Dave Brock (Burliington, Ontario / Nelson) has a season-best two assists... sophomore defenseman Mike Banks (Norwalk, Conn. / Brien McMahon) picked up a career-best three ground balls... head coach Scott Marr registered his 75th career win.

Junior attack Andy Cook (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal), who leads Binghamton with eight goals and 14 total points this season, started off the week with a three-goal, one-assist performance against Villanova on Wednesday. It marked his third career hat trick. On Saturday, Cook had two goals and a career-high four assists (as well as a career-high six points) in the Bearcats' 12-7 win over Marist ...  the 12 goals is the most scored by the Bearcats since their 16-4 win over Hartford on March 31, 2007. For Cook, the six points represents his career high. Carlson turned in his second career hat trick while Donahue, who also added an assist, notched his first ...  in Binghamton's two games last week, senior goalie Larry Kline (Beverly, Mass./Beverly) recorded a .600 save percentage. He made a total of 21 saves in the two games.

Hartford (0-3, 0-0 America East) lost a 9-8 overtime thriller last week to Sacred Heart at Alumni Stadium. The Hawks trailed 8-5 early in the fourth quarter but rallied back behind three straight goals to tie the game and send it into extra time. Sacred Heart's Timmy Katz needed only 26 seconds, however, to net the winning goal in OT. Freshman Aidan Genik (Toronto, Ontario/Univ. of Western Ontario) led the Hawks with three goals, his second hat trick of the season. Classmate Ryan Compitello (Hauppauge, N.Y./Hauppague) also added a goal and two assists while sophomore Tim Fallon (Lowell, Mass./Lawrence Academy) had two goals. Sophomore goalie Lee Malandrino (Shoreham, N.Y./Shoreham Wading River) made his first start of the season and finished with five saves... Genik leads the team in scoring with eight goals and two assists for 10 points... Hartford's three losses this season have come by a combined four goals. The Hawks are averaging 8.3 goals per game thus far, up from 5.7 through the first three games of last season... Hartford will next face Harvard on Friday, Mar ch 13 at 7 p.m.

UMBC’s 15-game home winning streak was snapped as they fell, 14-11, to tenth-ranked Johns Hopkins on Tuesday... The fifth-ranked Princeton Tigers nipped UMBC, 6-5, three nights later at UMBC Stadium... The Retrievers produced furious fourth-quarter rallies in both games, trimming a 13-6 deficit to 13-11 with nearly four mintues left vs. the Blue Jays and trimming a 6-2 deficit to 6-5 in the final minute of play... Senior midfielder Alex Hopmann (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis) scored a career high four goals against the Blue Jays... UMBC senior midfielder Peet Poillon (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley/Ohio State) added two goals and two assists and junior attackman Chris Jones (Martinsville, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) scored a pair of goals for the Retrievers... Hopmann added two more goals against Princeton and now leads the team with 13... Six of Hopmann’s goals have occurred on man-up situations and UMBC is a stunning 12 of 18 (66.7%) with the man advantage this season... Poillon assisted on three of UMBC’s five goals against Princeton and has 12 helpers in five games... The Retrievers won only two of 15 face offs against the Tigers... UMBC will play its third consecutive top-ten ranked team when the Retrievers travel to Maryland on Saturday... It will be UMBC’s second consecutive nationally-televised game... UMBC has won two straight games over the Terrapins, an NCAA Tournament game in College Park in 2007 and a triple-overtime win at UMBC Stadium last season. 

After dropping its first two games of the season, Stony Brook (2-2, 0-0 America East) has now won two straight to even its record ... that is the same way the Seawolves opened the 2008 season as well ... it is the first time SBU has won back-to-back games since April of last season, a span of five games ... just three games into his sophomore season, Jordan McBride notched his 50th career goal against Lehigh ... he now has 54 for his career, tying him for 17th all-time at Stony Brook ... he has scored a goal in every game this season and has three straight multi-goal games ... he has at least a point in 11 straight contests going back to last season ... the win at Siena was the second time in three years SBU has won its first game away from home ... with one more victory, head coach Rick Sowell will tie Lars Tiffany for third all-time at Stony Brook in career wins with 18 ... he is just four away from career win #60 overall ... junior goalie Charlie Paar made six of his eight saves at Siena in the fourth quarter to help preserve the win ... at one point in the fourth of that game Paar was caught out of the crease after a turnover, but defensemen Nick Maturro and Seven Waldeck both leapt in front of the SBU goal, with Maturro deflecting a sure goal away with his stick ... Stony Brook has averaged over 1,500 fans at its home games so far in 2009 ... Stony Brook has been accurate with its shooting, with over 74 percent of its shots winding up on goal ... the win over Lehigh was the fourth straight for the Seawolves in that series ... the victory over Siena keeps SBU’s record against the Saints unblemished at 6-0.rica.com with any questions or concerns.

Vermont
(2-0, 0-0 America East) earned an 11-9 win against Dartmouth in its home opener at Moulton Winder Field last Tuesday ... Senior Andrew Kelleher (Delmar, N.Y./Bethlehem H.S.) scored five goals while sophomore Derek Lichtfuss (Lutherville, Md./St. Paul’s) added three goals ... Kelleher already has nine goals in two games this season after recording 14 goals all of last season... Freshman Geoff Worley (Coronado, Calif/Coronado H.S.) had three assists and has a team high four assists in two games ... Senior goalie Justin Lubas (Freehold, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy) made nine saves in the win against Dartmouth ... Freshman Peter Oswald (Cohasset, Mass./Thayer Academy) went 8-for-11 on face offs ... The Catamounts are now 2-0 for the first time since 2001 ... The win against Dartmouth was the first for Vermont since 1999 ... The victory ended a six-game losing streak to the Big Green ... Vermont travels to No. 1 Virginia on Tuesday (March 10) and visits Bellarmine on Thursday (March 12).
