ALBANY, N.Y. -- Darryl Proctor scored a career-high 33 points and had 11 rebounds to lead sixth-seeded UMBC past third-seeded Boston University, 79-75, in overtime in the quarterfinals of the America East Men's Basketball Championship at SEFCU Arena Saturday. The defending champion Retrievers advance to the semifinals to take on seventh-seeded Albany Sunday at 2 p.m. pitting the sixth and seventh-seeded teams against each
other in the championship semifinals for the first time ever.
Proctor hit a 10-foot jumper in the lane with 2.5 seconds left in regulation to force overtime. UMBC then in overtime would go up by three points with 29 seconds left off a Proctor lay-up and Jay Greene would make a pair of free throws with nine seconds left to seal the victory for the Retrievers (14-16).
BU's Corey Lowe scored 17 of his team-high 33 points in the first 20 minutes to give the Terriers a 31-29 edge at the break. Boston U. would lead by as many as 11 in the second half, and was up 66-58 with 3:13 left before the Retrievers, behind a three-point play by Justin Fry and a layup by Proctor cut the deficit to 66-65 with 46 seconds to go. Lowe made one of two free throws with 17 seconds remaining in regulation before Proctor tied it at 67-67 after 40 minutes.
UMBC would force 15 Boston University turnovers while only turning the ball over four times in a game that featured eight lead changes and seven ties. The Terriers had a 44-37 edge on the glass for the game but the Retrievers stayed alive with 13 offensive rebounds that led to 18 second chance points.
Along with Proctor, Fry would score a career-high 19 points and pull down 10 rebounds while Chauncey Gilliam added 16. Greene dished a game-high eight assists for UMBC who moves on to the semifinals for the third straight year.
In addition to Lowe who had seven rebounds and four assists, John Holland finished with 20 points and Matt Wolff had nine rebounds and six assists as the Terriers fall to 17-13 on the season.
