Late Heroics Net Kelleher, Resetarits Men's Lacrosse Weekly Honors

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - University of Vermont's Andrew Kelleher (Delmar, N.Y./Bethlehem) and University at Albany's Joe Resetarits (Hamburg, N.Y./Hamburg) each propelled their teams to wins with late heroics en route to receiving America East Men's Lacrosse weekly honors for March 2.

Kelleher, the Player of the Week, scored four times, including the game-winning goal with one second remaining in regulation, and added an assist to lead Vermont to a thrilling 8-7 win at Marist Saturday. A senior attack, Kelleher picked up a loose ball in front of the Marist cage, one his four ground balls on the day, and found the back of the net as time expired to give the Catamounts a win in their season opener for the first time since 2006.

Resetarits, the Rookie of the Week, scored four goals, including a pair of key second-half tallies to lead Albany to an 8-7 comeback win in double-overtime over Siena. With his team trailing 7-5 late in the fourth quarter, Resetarits, a freshman attack, got his team within one with 3:40 to play and sent the game to overtime on his fourth goal of the day with three-tenths of a second remaining. With the win, the Great Danes snapped a six-game losing skid in one goal contests.

In other action over the weekend, seventh-ranked UMBC stayed unbeaten with a 13-9 win over No. 17 Colgate. Hartford came close to victory again before falling at Delaware, 11-9. The Hawks have dropped their last two games by a combined three goals. Stony Brook fell to 0-2 after dropping a 12-4 decision to nationally-ranked Harvard.

Rankings Report: UMBC, which is off to a 3-0 start this season, climbed one spot to sixth in the USILA Coaches Poll, matching the program's highest ranking established last season. The Retrievers are ranked eighth in the Nike/Inside Lacrosse Media Poll, while Albany also received one vote.

Albany (1-1, 0-0 America East) edged crosstown-rival Siena, 8-7, in double overtime on Feb. 25 with an improbable play at the end of regulation... The Saints appeared to have thwarted any comeback when goalkeeper Brent Herbst stopped Joe Resetarits (Hamburg, N.Y. / Hamburg) from the left side of the cage with 12 seconds remaining... But defenseman Kyle Vercruysse’s clearing pass was picked by UAlbany goalie John Carroll (Nesconset, N.Y. / Smithtown East) and the freshman sent a desperation heave into the Siena zone... After three bounces in the box, Resetarits corralled the loose ball and put it in the back of the net from the top of crease with three-tenths of a second to play to force overtime... Resetarits finished with four goals, including two in the late stages of the fourth quarter that brought his team back from a 7-5 deficit... Joe Pompo (Syracuse, N.Y. / West Genesee) scored the game-winner with 32 seconds elapsed in the second extra period by sending a blast from the right point into the upper left corner... Pompo has put together a string of six consecutive multiple-goal games dating back to last season... The Great Danes had dropped six consecutive one-goal decisions, a streak that went back to the 2007 NCAA quarterfinal game against Cornell... UAlbany is now 5-3 in overtime contests as a Division I program... sophomore attacker Brian Caufield (Bay Shore, N.Y. / West Islip) totaled one goal and three assists vs. Siena... Caufield has accounted for four-plus points in 10 of his last 11 starts... Corey Small (St. Catharines, Ontario / Holy Cross) has scored at least one point in 19 consecutive games, spanning back to May 3, 2007... Carroll, a freshman, made double-figure saves for the second straight start with 12 stops... UAlbany is 24-20 all-time in Division I games decided by two goals or less...

Binghamton (0-3, 0-0 America East) continues its early season homestand with games this week against Villanova and Marist at the Bearcats Sports Complex ... sophomore attack Brian Donahue (Camilus, N.Y./West Genesee) had a career-high two goals in Saturday at Drexel. In three games, he has three goals ... senior midfielder Duncan Streeten (Corning, N.Y./Corning East), tied a career high with two goals in Binghamton's game against Hobart last Tuesday. He also scored two goals against Vermont on April 8, 2007 ... sophomore attack Andy Cook (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal), who leads the Bearcats with three goals and an assist through three games, also had a pair of goals in the game against Hobart. Both of his goals game in the last four minutes of the game ... senior goalie Larry Kline recorded 12 saves in Saturday's game against Drexel. So far this season, he has averaged 11.67 saves per game.

Hartford (0-2, 0-0 America East) rallied back but fell short in an 11-9 defeat at Delaware last week in its only action. The Hawks fell behind by six goals early in the second quater and trailed by five at the half. Hartford bounced back behind a strong third quarter, outscoring Delaware 5-1 in the stanza to cut the deficit to one. After the Blue Hens scored early in the fourth quarter to go up by two, freshman Carter Bender (Caledon, Ontario/Brewster Academy) scored his third goal with 9:50 remaining in the game to pull the Hawks back to within one at 10-9. Delaware's defense kept Hartford off the scoreboard from there on out, and the Blue Hens added an insurance goal for the 11-9 final. Senior Justin Bearse (Hyannis, Mass./Barnstable) recorded a game- and career-high five points on two goals and a career-best three assists. Senior Jon McMahon (Tonawanda, N.Y./Sweet Home) and sophomore Lee Malandrino (Shoreham , N.Y./Shoreham Wading River) each saw time in goal and combined for 18 saves... Bender became the second Hartford rookie in as many weeks to record a hat trick. Classmate Aidan Genik (Toronto, Ontario/University of Western Ontario) netted five against Dartmouth in the season opener... Hartford will next host Sacred Heart University on Saturday, March 7 at 1 p.m.

UMBC (3-0, 0-0 America East), the seventh-ranked team in the nation, broke open a tight contest with a 4-0 fourth quarter surge and defeated 17th-ranked Colgate, 13-9 in a match-up of 2008 NCAA Tournament participants at chilly UMBC Stadium on Feb. 28... At 3-0, the Retrievers are off to their best start since 2001... It was only the second-ever meeting between the two teams and the first since a 20-6 UMBC victory in 1992... Junior midfielder Kyle Wimer (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) led the Retrievers with five points, coming on a pair of goals and three assists. Junior attackman Chris Jones (Martinsville, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) tied his career high with three goals and senior midfielder Alex Hopmann (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis) also scored three goals... Senior midfielder Peet Poillon (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley/Ohio State) added to the balanced attack with a goal and three assists... Neither team enjoyed more than a one goal lead as there were eight ties until UMBC’s decisive run... Wimer now has 10 goals and four assists in UMBC’s 3-0 start...He is tied with Poillon (6g, 8a) for the team scoring lead, but owns ground ball honors with 15 in three games... The Retrievers outshot the Raiders, 39-37, and UMBC senior goalkeeper Jeremy Blevins (Cockeysville, Md./Calvert Hall) made 13 saves... Sophomore attackman Matt Latham (Eldersburg, Md./Liberty) had a goal and an assist and kept his goal-scoring alive at 13 straight...UMBC is slated to return home on Tuesday evening, March 3 for a 7:30 contest vs. Johns Hopkins, then turn around and face a young and talented Princeton squad on March 7... That game will be televised on ESPNU and WMAR (ABC2) in Baltimore... UMBC has now won 15 straight home games and 20 of 21, with the last loss occurring to Johns Hopkins in 2007.

Stony Brook (0-2, 0-0 America East)has opened the season 0-2 for the second straight season ... both of Stony Brook’s first two opponents have been ranked in the top-20 ... it is the first time in the history of the program that the Seawolves have played back-to-back ranked opponents to start a season ... Jordan McBride and Chris Scott are the only two players to have scored goals in each of the first two games  ... Scott scored just one goal last season in limited action  ... sophomore Jordan McBride’s goal kept his scoring streak alive going back to last season ... he has now scored a point in nine straight games, tops on the team ... Stony Brook’s four goals against Harvard was its lowest total in a game since it scored four at Hartford in 2007 ... the crowd of 1,523 was the third straight attendance of 1,500 or more in LaValle Stadium going back to last season ... Stony Brook’s current home stand of three games to start the season is it s longest of the season ... the Seawolves will not play consecutive home games the rest of the season.

Vermont (1-0, 0-0 America East) picked up an 8-7 win over Marist on Saturday in its season opener ... Senior Andrew Kelleher (Delmar, N.Y./Bethlehem H.S.) scored four goals, including the game winner with one second remaining ... Kelleher also had 10 shots, four ground balls and an assist ... Freshman Geoff Worley (Coronado, Calif/Coronado H.S.) added two goals, an assist and 11 shots ... Senior goalie Justin Lubas (Freehold, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy) made 13 saves to earn the win ... Vermont out shot Marist 36-25 ... The win marked the first time the Catamounts have won their season opener since 2006 ... Vermont hosts Dartmouth in its home opener at Moulton Winder Field on Tuesday at 3 p.m.
