Albany Sweeps Men's Lacrosse Awards For Second Straight Week

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- University at Albany again swept America East Men Lacrosse honors this week after wins over No. 13 UMass and at Drexel. Sophomore attack Brian Caufield (Bay Shore, N.Y./West Islip) was tabbed Player of the Week, while freshman attack Joe Resetarits (Hamburg, N.Y./Hamburg) garnered Rookie of the Week accolades. The award winners for the week ending March 15 were announced on Monday.

Caufield scored seven goals and handed out six assists in a pair of Albany wins last week. The sophomore attack had three goals, including what proved to be the game-winner late in the third quarter, and assisted on four others in a 12-9 win over No. 13 UMass on Tuesday. He followed that performance with four goals and a pair of helpers in the Great Danes' 13-11 road win at Drexel Saturday to propel his team into the national rankings at No. 17. 

Resetarits earned his second Rookie of the Week honor with seven scores and an assist in a pair of Albany wins last week. He had a career-high five goals in the win over nationally-ranked UMass, including two key scores in the decisive fourth quarter. Both of Resetarits' scores in the win over Drexel proved to be key. With his team trailing 8-7 in the third period, the freshman attack scored back-to-back goals to put his team ahead. Through five games he ranks sixth in the league with 2.40 goals per game.

Rankings Report: UMBC shot up to sixth in the Nike/Inside Lacrosse Media Poll and seventh in the USILA Coaches Poll after posting a 9-7 victory over #5 Maryland, the Retrievers third-straight win over their in-state rivals. Albany also is ranked in both polls for the first time this season. The Great Danes, winners of four straight, are slotted 17th in both polls.
 
Albany (4-1, 0-0 America East) is off to its second-best start as a Division I program following victories over No. 13 Massachusetts (12-9) and Drexel (13-11) last week... The Great Danes rallied from an 8-7 deficit in the third quarter in both contests... Brian Caufield (Bay Shore, N.Y. / West Islip) picked up an intended pass for the UMass goalkeeper and scored to break an 8-8 deadlock with 59 seconds left in the period... Caufield, who equaled the second-highest scoring total of his career with three goals and four assists, gave his team a 10-8 advantage with an extra-man goal... The Great Danes are 13-17 against national top-20 teams since the start of the 2005 season... Joe Resetarits (Hamburg, N.Y. / Hamburg) added a career-high five goals, including two in the decisive fourth quarter... Resetarits also played a major role in the Drexel outcome, as he netted back-to-back goals in the third period... the freshman attack drove from behind the cage and scored while falling in front of the crease for a 9-8 lead with 47 seconds remaining in the stanza... Corey Small (St. Catharines, Ontario / Holy Cross) totaled three goals and two assists and gave his team a 13-10 advantage with 6:44 to play... Small has scored five or more points on six occasions as a collegian... the senior extended his scoring streak to 22 consecutive games, the sixth-longest among active Division I players... John Carroll (Nesconset, N.Y. / Smithtown East) recorded a career-high 17 saves, including a key stop with his team in a man-down situation in the final period... UAlbany is 25-20 all-time in Division I games decided by two goals or less... Chris Schongar (Clifton Park, N.Y. / Shenendehowa) has 178 career ground balls as a long-stick midfielder... Matt Johnson (Glenmont, N.Y. / Bethlehem Central) and Matt Cushing (Minoa, N.Y. / East Syracuse-Minoa) made their first appearances of the season at Drexel... Johnson scored an extra-man goal and Cushing won 9-of-14 face-offs.

Binghamton (1-4, 0-0 America East) was idle last week... The Bearcats, who coming off a win over Marist in their last outing, will face Bellarmine in Medina, Ohio on Tuesday and travel up I-81 to face second-ranked Syracuse on Saturday.

Hartford (0-4, 0-0 America East) dropped an 18-7 final to 16th-ranked Harvard University last week in its only action. The Hawks fell behind the Crimson 6-0 after the first quarter and never recovered. Both freshman Carter Bender (Caledon, Ontario/Brewster Academy) and sophomore Vinny Pellizzi (Bohemia, N.Y./Connetquot) each netted two goals and added an assist to lead Hartford... Freshman Aidan Genik (Toronto, Ontario/Univ. of Western Ontario) leads the team in scoring with nine goals and three assists for 12 points. Bender ranks close behind with 10 points on six goals and four assists... Hartford will play two games this week, beginning with a visit to Holy Cross on Tuesday, March 17 at 6:30 p.m. The Hawks will then face Siena College on Saturday, March 21 at 2:30 p.m. in West Islip, N.Y. The game, played at a netural site, will raise money for Lacrosse for Lukemia.

UMBC
(4-2, 0-0 America East) earned its third straight victory over in-state rival Maryland, as they edged the 7th-ranked Terrapins, 9-7, at Ludwig Field on Saturday... Both teams are now 4-2 on the season, as UMBC snapped a two-game losing streak and are now 2-0 on the road this season... It was also UMBC’s first game on grass this season... The Retrievers used a 4-0 run to lead 5-1 midway through the third quarter, and a 4-1 surge in the latter stages of the game to lead 9-4 in the fourth period... Senior midfielder Alex Hopmann (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis) and junior linemate Kyle Wimer (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) led a balanced attack with two goals and one assist... Freshman Rob Grimm (Black River, N.Y./Carthage) was the other Retriever with multiple points with a goal and a helper... Hopmann leads the team with 15 goals, while Wimer has 14... UMBC is 4-0 this season when Wimer scores multiple points... UMBC had won only 32.8 percent of its draws entering the game against a strong face-off team in 7th-ranked Maryland, but freshman Jujstin Radebaugh (Lutherville, Md./Boys’ Latin) won 10 of 20 draws to help the Retrievers to the victory. junior LSM Mike Camardo (Altamont, N.Y./Guilderland) excelled vs. the Terps with four ground balls and four caused turnovers... UMBC has won its last two encounters with the Terrapins in College Park... Hopmann has nine goals in his last four outings vs. Maryland... UMBC is now 199-191 at the Division I level (1981), needing one more victory to hit the 200-mark... UMBC returns home to entertain Ohio State on Saturday... The Retrievers lead the series, 5-2, but have won four of five in overtime, including a 12-11 decision in two extra frames in Columbus last season.

Stony Brook (3-2, 0-0 America East) has opened the season 3-2 for the second straight season ... Stony Brook’s three-game win streak matches its best from last season ... the Seawolves will play twice on the road this week ... it is the first time this season SBU has played back-to-back road contests ... SBU will play twice in a week just one more time after this week’s two games ... defender Steven Waldeck’s goal against Delaware give him one goal in each of his three seasons to date  ... Charlie Paar’s 17 saves in goal against Delaware was the most for him this season  ... sophomore Jordan McBride’s goal kept his scoring streak alive going back to last season ... he has now scored a point in 12 straight games, tops on the team ... the remainder of Stony Brook’s opponents this season were on the schedule last year as well  ... Timmy Trenkle’s three goals against Delaware were a career-high ... Tom Compitello’s three assists also set a career best and are the most in a game this season for Stony Brook ... the double-overtime game was the first time in Stony Brook lacrosse history that it has had a game end in a second overtime ... SBU has played a six OT game ... the last time Stony Brook has played in back-to-back one-goal games was back in the 2002 season ... the Seawolves had just two one-goal games all of last season, splitting the pair.

Vermont (3-2, 0-0 America East) went 1-2 last week ... The Catamounts dropped a 16-4 decision at top-ranked and undefeated Virginia on Tuesday and then picked up an 11-4 win at Bellarmine last Thursday on the road swing ... Vermont dropped a 7-5 decision to Penn State on Sunday at Moulton Winder Field in front of a crowd of close to 1,000 ... Senior Andrew Kelleher (Delmar, N.Y./Bethlehem) had seven goals on the week and has a team leading 20 goals on the season ... Kelleher has scored a goal in every game this season and has seven man-up tallies on the year ... Kelleher is also second on the team in ground balls with 17 ... Last year Kelleher had a total of 14 goals in 16 games ... Sophomore Derek Lichtfuss (Lutherville, Md./St. Paul’s) had seven goals on the week, including four in the win against Bellarmine ... Lichtfuss is second on the team in goals (10) and third in points (12) ... Freshman Geoff Worley (Coronado, Calif./Coronado, Calif.) has a team-high eight assists and is second on the team in scoring with 13 points ... Kelleher, Lichtfuss and Worley have accounted for 74% of Vermont’s offense so far this season (45 of 61 points) ... Senior goalie Justin Lubas (Freehold, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy) has an 8.12 goals against average and a .612 save percentage ... He had a season high 19 saves in the win against Bellarmine ... Vermont meets No. 5 Notre Dame in the Patriot Cup this Saturday at 12pm (CST) in Dallas, Texas, at SMU Ford Field.
