VESTAL,
N.Y. -- Former Binghamton baseball pitcher Scott
Diamond has been selected to Canada's final roster for the
upcoming World Baseball Classic. Diamond was one of 13 pitchers
chosen for the Canadian team.
Canada
will open pool play against the United States on March 7 at the
Rogers Centre in Toronto. The WBC runs from March 5-23 in seven
venues in four countries or territories, with the finals scheduled
for March 23 at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles. The Rogers Centre
is hosting Round 1 games from March 7-11.
Canada
plays in a pool with the U.S., Italy and Venezuela.
The
Canadian roster features MLB stars Justin Morneau, Jason Bay
and Matt Stairs.
Diamond
completed a successful summer with the Atlanta Braves organization
in 2008. He was selected as Pitcher of the Year for their Class
A-Advanced Myrtle Beach team. The 6-foot-4 lefthander was among
the Braves' minor league award winners who were honored before
Atlanta's game against the New York Mets on September 20 at Turner
Field.
He
began the season with Class A Rome (Ga.) before earning a promotion
in May. Up with Myrtle Beach, he went 12-2, helping the Pelicans
advance to the Carolina League finals. He led the league in wins
and win percentage and held down a 2.79 earned run average. Diamond
pitched 100 innings in 15 starts, striking out 85 and walking
28. Opponents hit just .245 off him.
Diamond
signed with the Atlanta organization in August 2007.
In
three seasons at Binghamton (2005-07), he totalled 14 wins and
started 37 games - the most starts of any BU pitcher in that
span.
