Fogarty, Walton, Shaw And Clark Earn Season's Last Weekly Awards

CAMBRIDGE, Mass-  In the final week of regular season competition, University at Albany’s Tyler Fogarty (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa) and Boston University’s Shelby Walton (Danbury, Conn./Danbury) earned male and female Track Performer of the Week awards, while University of New Hampshire’s Spencer Shaw (Hampton, N.H./Winnacunnet) and Boston University’s Edwina Clark (Sydney, Australia/Presbyterian) garnered the last male and female Field Performer of the Week awards for the 2008-09 indoor season.  

Fogarty, a sophomore, traveled to the Tyson Invitational this weekend at the University of Arkansas to compete alongside 14 nationally ranked programs.  Fogarty placed fourth in a time of 1:49.60 in the 800-meter run, provisionally qualifying him for the NCAA Championship and placing him at the top of the America East performance list by over two seconds.

Walton posted a season-best time in the 55-meter dash at the Boston University Valentine Invitational on Friday, clocking in at 7.09 seconds.  The rookie’s time was enough for first place and puts her first in the America East performance list heading into the conference championship.

Shaw snapped a 67-year-old school record in the long jump at the Valentine Invitational at Boston University on Saturday.  The senior’s first-place distance of 23 feet, 10.25 inches broke the old record, set by A. Richard “Boo” Morcom in 1942, by more than three inches.

Clark, a senior, finished first among collegians in the long jump at the Boston University Valentine Invitational this weekend.  Clark’s leap of 18-8 was enough to qualify her for the post season ECAC Championship.

Albany- Several Great Danes competed at the Tyson Invitational at the University of Arkansas this weekend alongside 14 nationally ranked programs.  Sophomore Tyler Fogarty, and juniors Luke Schoen and Nasim Siddeeq all reached NCAA provisionally-qualifying marks for the men, while Zuliana Fontanez, a junior, and Jenn Gurrant, a senior, earned bids to the ECAC Championship on the women’s side in the 800-meter run (2:11.31) and the triple jump (38-9.50), respectively.   Fogarty clocked in a fourth-place time of 1:49.60 in the 800-meter run, Siddeeq reached a mark of 51-0.25 feet in the triple jump and Schoen provisionally-qualified for the pole vault for the fourth time this year by clearing a height of 17-0.75.  

Albany's Story

Binghamton- In their final meet before next weekend's America East Championship, the Binghamton track & field teams split a tri-meet against Albany and Syracuse at the Events Center on Friday evening. The men were first with 246 points, followed by Albany with 242 points and Syracuse with 178. The Great Danes narrowly won the women's meet against the Bearcats, 239-235. Syracuse finished with 173 points.  The lone double winner for the Bearcats was Joanel Lopez, who swept both the men's shotput (51-5.5) and weight throw (57-11.0)

Boston- The Terriers hosted the Boston University Valentine Invitational this weekend and had several athletes with strong showings in the final week of regular season competition.  Freshman Shelby Walton won the 55-meter dash in a field of 79 competitors by posting an impressive season-best 7.09, leading senior Erin Catarius and junior Whitney Ford across the line who finished fifth (7.22) and sixth (7.24), respectively.  Senior Edwina Clark finished first among collegians and second overall in the 48-competitor long jump field, earning an 18-8 foot mark.  On the men’s side, three Terriers earned ECAC-qualifying marks in the 1,000- and 800-meter runs.  Sophomore Ken Haltom qualified in the 1,000m, finishing in 2:28.97, while junior Jeff Moreau (1:52.45) and freshman Balint Horvath (1:52.54) met the mark in the 800m.

Boston's Story

Hartford- Hartford’s men’s and women’s track teams combined to set four school records at the Rider/Lafayette Winter Games this weekend, three on the women’s side and one for the men.  Elizabeth Foster earned the women’s top finish of the day, placing 12th in the one mile with a school record-breaking time of 5:11.21.  Adding to Hartford’s record books were Melanie Wilson with a 2:23.38 finish in the 800-meter run and Rebecca Perry with a 37-7.75 toss in the weight throw.  For the men, Andrew Chalmers’ 15:55.46 time beat the previous Hawk record in the 5,000-meter run by more than two seconds.  Senior Anthony Oluwanifise was the only top 10 finish for the Hawks, earning eighth in the long jump with a distance of 21-10.

Hartford's Story

Maine- The Black Bears saw school records fall at the Boston University Valentine Invitational this weekend as James Berry broke the pole vault record for the second consecutive meet and Vicki Tolton broke her own school record in the 400-meter dash.  Berry added 0.5 inches to his previous record when he cleared 15-5.50 and Tolton finished over a second ahead of her previous mark with a time of 55.35.  Riley Masters qualified for the IC4A Championship in the one-mile with an eighth-place time of 4:08.30 and Rebecca Even earned third in the weight throw with a toss of 53-1.00.

UMBC- The Retrievers competed at the Rider/Lafayette Winter Games in New York on Saturday and saw several athletes qualify for post-season competition.  For the women, Sara Parkinson, a junior, won the one-mile with an ECAC-qualifying time of 4:55.18 while classmate Britney Foreman and freshman Imani Colbert won the 60-meter dash and 60-meter hurdles, respectively.  Qualifying for the IC4A Championships on the men’s side were freshman Joshua Hewitson, who finished the 500-meter dash in 1:05.11, and sophomore Victor Gilreath who earned third in the triple jump with a mark of 14.74m.  Junior Adrian Arthur set a UMBC-season best time in the 200-meter dash, crossing in 22.15 seconds after finishing second in the 60-meter dash (6.90).

UMBC's Story

New Hampshire- Wildcat senior Spencer Shaw broke a 67-year-old school long jump record at the Boston University Valentine Invitational on Saturday, recording a leap of 23 feet, 10.25 inches which was enough for first place.  Classmate Jeff Kaste had a successful outing in the field events as the top collegiate finisher in the weight throw (60-5.75) and as seventh-place in the shot put (49-7.25).  The men’s 4x400 relay squad finished third in a 49-team field recording an impressive time of 3:14.30.  For the women, sophomore Camille Quarles earned a pair of top 10 finishes while junior teammates Rita Ciambra and Ashlee Lathrop each earned a second-place finish.  Quarles earned sixth in the long jump (17-8.50) and the triple jump (37-8) while Lathrop’s runner-up points came from the weight toss (57-3.50) and Ciambra’s from the pole vault (12-5.50).

New Hampshire's Story

Stony Brook- The Seawolves competed at Boston University’s Valentine Invitational this weekend and had three athletes on the men’s squad qualify for the IC4A Championship.  Senior Merlon Pinnock broke the Stony Brook record in the 400-meter dash with his qualifying time of 49.05.  Junior distance specialists Daire Bermingham and Alex Felce reached the qualifying mark in the 1,000-meter, taking second and third respectively with times of 2:26.22 and 2:26.99.

Vermont- The Catamounts were among many America East competitors at the Boston University Valentine Invitational this past weekend and were highlighted by junior Aaron Campbell’s and senior Jan Carlson’s second-place finishes in the 55 meters.  Campbell posted a time of 6.40, breaking his own school for the second time this season, while Carlson ran the event in 7.12 and was a hundredth of a second off her own school record.  Junior Justin Scricca also surpassed his own school record in the 400 meters, posting a time of 48.84 which was enough for ninth among collegiate runners.  Ase Lundin earned two top 10 finishes for the women in the high jump (5-0.25) and the triple jump (36-11.75) while Thomas Martin earned fourth in the men’s pole vault (13-11.75).
